What a great discovery! This book is the perfect idiom program for my students. I would love to see a new edition, and I would buy it for all my students.

A suggestion:

The new edition could include a variety of accents to give the dialogues a more international flavor. Right now, all the voices are American. This is fine, but most of my students are Europeans.

It teaches hundreds of idioms in their everyday contexts.
This is the most sophisticated idiom text I've seen in my 7 years teaching ESL.Ideal for the intermediate to advanced student, It includes the most-used phrasal verbs as well as expressions. The excercises are welldesigned matching, cloze, and conversation/role plays. What a pity if it'snot re-published soon!

Excellent classroom text
I teach English as a second language at a college, and I am currently teaching an idioms course with this book as the text.Not only is it an excellent text for the student, but it also provides a great framework for the teacher as well.There are plenty of activities to choose from; some are self-directed and many others are group-oriented so that students can actually practice using the idioms in speech (so important).These books have probably cut my preparation time for these classes down to one-tenth of what it might be.And from a teacher's point of view, the less time you spend on prep, the more energy you've got for actually teaching.The final thing I want to say about this book is that it's a lot of fun for the students.The dialogues are often pretty funny, and my students really enjoy doing the role-playing and dialogues that are in the text.

Perfect for ESL students!
I have read good books on the subject of idioms, but if you want a straightforward approach this is the one. Very simple, it has a pleasant layout that makes good use of illustrations that depict daily situations which you can easily relate to. While other idiom books are somewhatfrugal, it takes no time for you to be overflowed with lots of examplesthat are easily understood reading this one. Idioms can be formed in many ways. For example, the word “man” has been used to form many idioms. The parts of the body of man, for example, hands, fingers, eyes, hair, ears, foot, skin, tooth, skeleton, etc. have been used to form numerous idioms. The names of various animals, for example, cat, dog, ass, bull, goose, cock, hen, goat, bird, fish, lion, chicken, and various objects have been used to form idioms. Events and stories from Theology, History, Geography, Science, Mythology, Folk – Tale, Legend, Romance, Economics, Linguistics, Medicine, Law, Politics, Current Events, Sports, Mathematics, Biology, Philosophy and other subjects have been used in order to “create” this interesting branch of English – idioms.

Not every item in this book is an idiom. Collocations (A collocation is a group of words which are often used together to form a natural–sounding combination), common sayings, proverbs and interesting expressions have all been embodied in this book. Simple but Effective
I absolutely love idioms! After looking at several books on idioms, including the Oxford dictionary of idioms, I picked this one because of its simplicity. The book is quite concise and straight to the point - the meaning of the idioms are brief and quick to grasp. Collocations are built right into the idioms. The section on correlatives was a plus. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable look into America's language
What fun!Any fans of the English language or American pop culture will enjoy this reference book of common (and not so common) slang.I really enjoyed the origins of slang terms, which Mr. Dunn provides for many of theentries.

Gaining insight into the private language of these professions,sports, and hobbies was very interesting, and many quite humourous.Somecould offend, however, and the book is not recommended for children.

Onesuggestion I would have made to Mr. Dunn is to have used periods to clarifyacronyms that are pronounced by the letters (D.O.A.) and no periods whenthey are pronounced as a word (NASA), as I was confused as to how someterms were to be pronounced (all acronyms are listed without periods).

I'm hoping there will be other editions of this book, as I'm sure thereare many other lexicons in American culture to be explored. ... Read more
