1-0 out of 5 stars Advanced?
I was looking for a book on advanced techniques -this is NOT the book. She covers roller hockey, speed skating and other topics very briefly. The book is misnamed...........should read "In Line skating Activities".....

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Advanced? Are you kidding? This book spends a lot of time about covering a broad range of topics - but none in depth.I was looking for a good book on techniques -- well this is NOT the one.It is very superfiscial and not worth buying.I found some "beginners" books with more info!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, but broad rather than deep.
This book covers fairly diverse inline areas- speed, hockey, fitness, etc and as a result does not delve too deeply into any one area.If you wish to pursue any one aspect of skating, I'd recommend finding something more specialised. For example, the two areas that I specifically wish to pursue, double push and stair riding, are not covered at all.I find it especially puzzling that stair riding could be missing from a book with this title.

Still, as broad skating book, it's quite interesting and does have some good stuff on stroke technique.

5-0 out of 5 stars verey good book
good book it tells you the basics and more. i loved it cause i love to in-line skate if you dont now after you read it you will...

4-0 out of 5 stars I don't understand
I don't understand how they demonstrated leadership qualities. What are there leadership qualities? How were they influenced by positive or negative leadership. SO someone e-mail me at amber_tara69@hotmail.com and answer my questions for me please.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
Growing up in Canada, figure skating is something of a religion. Over the country's history its skaters have been extremely successful on the world stage. The long legacy of Canadian figure skating is continuously passed down to new generations of emerging stars. Brasseur and Eisler are part of that legacy. Their success in pairs figure skating has inspired a whole new crop of young Canadian skaters. their place in Canadian (and world) sporting history is secure.

So, in picking up this book, what I was hoping for was an honest and well-written portrayal of what it's like to rise to the top of a sport. I had also hoped for some inside information on B&E's lives. In one sense, I got it. The book is honest and forthcoming, the insights are fresh and entertaining.

The problem, however, is in the writing. I understand that B&E are skaters first and writers second, but who is Lynda Prouse, the third name on the cover? Lynda Prouse is supposed to be an author first and a skating fan second. Her writing is clumsy and amateurish. To Catch a Dream reads more like a dripping fan book from some outsider than a serious biography. The errors and omissions are too numerous to mention. I was extremely disappointed when I opened the book and found that two of my idols had been compromised by such a badly writen monstrosity.

I only wish B&E had told their story with a less heavy-handed third party. The Prouse influence on this book is unavoidable and it ruins an otherwise excellent idea. A real shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars Acompelling tale of one of the best pair skating teams
The story which gives both points of view from Isabelle and Lloyd is heartfelt. Both tell of how they met and how their relationship has grown from over the years from simply a pairs skating ensemble to best friends. "Herbie" and "Freddy", as is their nicknames for each other, have written a book together that will always be named one of my favorites. Honesty is evident in the book, when they tell of their competition days, from Lloyd throwing chairs to more personal trivial tales of Isabelle throwing erasers. They do not hold back with their emotions in the book being brutally honest at times. Included in the book are tales of inside skating pranks and accidents from the days of touring. Personal triumph is also quite evident in the book when Isabelle speaks of the death of her father to Lloyd's transformation from the "bull in the chain shop" to the skater who feels the music, loud and soft. Compelling andcaptivating

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for all skating fans
To Catch a Dream chronicles the skating careers of one of Canada's (and indeed one of the world's) greatest pairs skaters, Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler. The reader is taken on a trip back into time reliving the lives of Brasseur and Eisler from their childhood through to their Olympic glory.

This book is certainly worth a read for fans of Brasseur and Eisler, if one can get past the grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Although the entire book is written in the first person, from the points of view of both Isabelle and Lloyd, Linda Prouse's job (and one really finds it very hard to believe she is an "award-winning writer") was to clean up what was written and make it flow smoothly and correctly. It was so disheartening for me to pick up this much-anticipated book and find grammatical errors starting in the very first paragraph. I have always been a tremendous fan of B&E's skating, and I enjoyed reading the details of their rise to the top, but please!! somebody, fix those mistakes, for they make the book very difficult to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a really good and interesting book
This book shows its readers the lives of two of the best pairs skaters ever.Isabelle and Lloyd talk about their lives before skating together and during the most trying times of their careers. There is also a look at what their lives are like off the ice. This book has a small tribute to Sergei Grinkov.I reccomend this book to anyone who likes figure skating or a good autobiography. ... Product Description
Figure skating, unique in its sublimely beautiful combination of technical precision, musicality, and interpretive elements, has undergone many dramatic developments since the only previous history of the sport was published in 1959. This exciting and information-packed new history by James R. Hines explains skating's many technical and artistic advances, its important figures, its intrigues and scandals, and the historical high points during its long evolution. Hines divides his history into three periods separated by the World Wars. In the first section, he follows functional and recreational ice skating through its evolution into national schools, culminating in the establishment of the International Skating Union and the ascendancy of an international style of skating. The second section explains the changes that occurred as the sport expanded into the form we recognize and enjoy today, and the final section shows how skating became increasingly athletic, imaginative, and intense following World War II, as the main focus turns to skaters themselves. The profiles include some 148 World and Olympic Champions as well as others who, in Dick Button's words, "left the sport better because they were in it." Beginning with mythological tales from twelfth- and thirteenth-century Scandinavians, Hines describes hundreds who have contributed to the sport. They include figure skating's patron saint Lydwina of Schiedam, whose late-fourteenth-century skating tumble has been documented in a woodcut; Ulrich Salchow and Axel Paulsen, who gave their names to distinctive jumps; Madge Syers, who entered and medaled at the previously all-male World Championships in 1902; and Sonja Henie, who took skating to the silver screen. The history ends with the 2002 skating season, when Maria Butyrskaya and Michelle Kwan commanded the most attention and an unfortunate judging decision rocked the pairs' competition, resulting in the adoption of a new judging system. Beyond the contributions of individual skaters, "Figure Skating" also traces the growth of competitions and show skating (professional and amateur), and discussions of relevant social, political, and ethical concerns that have affected the sport.Along with over seventy magnificent historical pictures spread throughout the book, a very special gallery features the picture of every world and Olympic champion. "Figure Skating" is an informative and inspiring resource, sure to be enjoyed by anyone who has ever skated recreationally or in competition as well as by the many fans who have this beautiful sport as spectators. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book in good condition.
This book has all the information you could ever want about the history of figure skating.
Very nice book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Less interesting than it could have been
This was ... pretty good ... but kinda like the little girl with the little curl. Where it's good it's really interesting. Where it's bad it just ... dull. Some sections the author goes into a lot of detail about skaters and events.Other sections read rather like a biblical geneology. "Jane Jones won in 1936 and Sue Smith won in 1937 and Mary Martin won in 1938 and 1939." Tell us MORE about Jane and Sue and Mary. What were their performances like? Who was the competition?

Skaters who were neither world nor olympic champions, even if their stories are interesting and they've made a major impact (i.e., Paul Wylie) barely rate a mention.

Many of the photos are posed shots rather than action photos, making it hard to picture what the events might have been like.

I did find it very interesting to read about synchronized skating and adult skating. (Having a friend who is involved in both, but knowing little about it, it was very enlightening.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written history without being sappy
This book will go over the heads of most skating fans and the author admits it.He even says that most books about figure skating fall into the category of "juvenile literature" because that's who's interested in them.

That said, it's a wonderful history of the sport - back to caveman days! - and goes into the story of things many people don't know about now, like school figures, or bat an eye at, like non-white skaters. The photos at the back are fascinating to look at because of the changes in clothing styles and the sport's transition from winter-only to year-round in the 1960s.There is also a chapter on skating teams, including foursomes, a phenomenon almost unique to Canadian skaters, with a bizarre picture of two men and two women doing a simultaneous death spiral. It looked, um, kinda kinky. The section on adult skating - competitive or not - was fun to read as well. Its participants range from late teens to seniors.

Little is said about scandals other than the infamous Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan thing, but the AIDS epidemic's impact on male skaters, a huge percentage of whom are gay, is hinted at simply because of the large number of men who died too young in the 1980s and 1990s.There is also a section on the plane crash that killed the entire 1961 U.S. skating team, their coaches, and some of their relatives, and led to the cancellation of that year's world championships and destroyed America's lead in this sport for many years afterwards.

I found it was not a book that I could just sit down and read, other than the chapters in the front, but rather looked things up in the index and went from there.

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long overdue...a perfect 6.0
This is a brilliant book -- and sorely needed one for afficionados of the sport. At last -- a serious, scholarly, up-to-date history of figure skating! The book traces the history of sport (the development of skates, positions, moves, etc.) from its earliest days in the Middle Ages when skating was a practical way of getting around in Nordic countries, through the first skating clubs in Elizabethan England and its rise in popularity in the 19th century, and, especially, 19th century America. The book is well documented, with footnotes and photos of all the important figures (there's even a picture of St. Lydwina -- the Roman Catholic patroness of skaters!)It gives a descriptive accounts of figure skating moves (jumps, spins, spirals, school figures, etc.) and how they developed along with their inventors; it also focuses on innovators of the sport who may not have won any championships and the development of the scoring system. It is all-embracing in its approach describing the sport as found in Europe, the Americas and the sport's recent surge in Asia.It also includes an appendix with tables of all winners (up to the year 2005) for World, European, Olympic and various oher championships. There are photographs of every world and Olympic champion -- a nice added extra, as it helps reveal how much the sport has changed through the past century. This book is for those who are serious about the sport, follow it closely and are interested in detailed accounts of figure skating as a competitive sport with a noble history, and as entertainment -- qualities unique to skating. It's a terrific book -- and it's about time! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!!
A classic love story with a bittersweet twist. two ice skaters, thrown together by chance fall in love. I cna't give away much more without giving away the entire story. this story is a must read for any fan of pairs figure skating.

5-0 out of 5 stars kaczenka
Love this book! I always was fan of G&G and only discovered little bit more about their life now. It's amazing to find out, that there is actually love like this! I can only wish I could ever have even 1/3 of such level oflove!Sorry for my mistakes, English is not my first language:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
I was in love with Katia Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov from the moment I first saw them skating together. Their classic routines were perfect enough to win many world championships including a 1988 Olympic gold medal in Calgary Canada.

Romance eventually blossomed and the beautifully matched pair were married in April of 1991. Their daughter, Daria Sergeyevna Grinkova, was born in my favorite Morristown NJ a little over a year later.

Reading Katia's memories of their life and love still brings tears to my eyes.

I recommend this book for its portrait of pure innocence enframed in the magical world of ice skating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful love letter
I'm really glad I found this book at a library book sale last year.Though this story is no longer current news, I hadn't forgotten about the tragic death of Sergey Grinkov or watching him perform with his wife Katya in the 1994 Winter Olympics. And even though the world has long since moved onto other headlines and stories of interest in the figure skating world, the love story told in this book is truly timeless. As a Russophile and a historian whose field of expertise is Russian history, it was a double joy to read because of all of the descriptions of Russian culture, the differences between Russian and American customs, and what life was like in the late Soviet period and the early post-Soviet period.(Although I have to say that the transliteration style wasn't completely pleasing to me; for example, I don't think I've ever read any other book where a double O is used in place of the letter U, as in Ligooshina or Katoosha, and I'm still trying to figure out how the nicknames Serioque and Katuuh are supposed to be written in Russian characters.)

Though the book begins and ends sadly, in between there's a lot of happiness and love, making this into a beautiful heartfelt love letter to a wonderful person, skating partner, friend, lover, husband, and father. The love between Katya and Seryozha is so pure and genuine, nothing like the type of superficial and problem-plagued celebrity relationships we're used to hearing about. It even made me a little jealous of their storybook love story! All throughout, Katya is very honest and open, about their relationship, the world of young skaters in the Soviet Union, what goes on behind the scenes at the Olympics, the hectic life on the road of skaters, and how difficult it was to constantly have to leave their daughter Darya behind while they skated. While I'm sure there are some things she chose not to write about, overall a very detailed and honest life and love story emerges. She was so lucky to have this wonderful man, who was so much more than just an athletic partner, for (what was then) half of her life.

Because the love story is so beautiful and like a dream come true, the reader can really feel her deep grief and sorrow expressed at the beginning and end of the book. It's a terrible thing to lose the love of your life, the father of your child, the only person you've ever skated with for the past 13 years, when you're only 24 years old. This beautiful love story isn't diminished for me by knowing that Katya has since moved on with her life and found love again. She had a child with Ilya Kulik six years after Sergey died, and married him a year later; it's not like she jumped into his bed soon after this book was published!(And since Kulik is six years younger, he would have been a bit too young for her then anyway.)When you're widowed at such a young age, you should hardly be expected to be in mourning forever, and it may help the more current reader to not feel quite so sad at the end, knowing that this intense pain and sorrow isn't such an overpowering force in Katya's life anymore. And new husband or not, there's no denying that her first husband, her first love, was indeed the greatest love of her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captured my heart
What a wonderful story this was.I love to watch skating and have not missed watching an Olympics since I was a kid.I am familiar with a lot of the skaters mentioned in this book.I thought this story was so touching and full of emotion.Katia considers her life with Sergei almost too perfect. They were so in love and their life together was indeed a fairy tale.I commend Katia for being able to pick herself and go on with her life no matter how difficult after Sergei's unexpected death in 1995.I thought the comparison between Russian and American customs was very interesting. This was an enjoyable and heartwarming read. ... Product Description
Figure skating is the most beautiful and mysterious of all sports. When the skaters are on the ice, every twitch of a muscle and every slip of a skate blade is visible for the world to see.In Inside Edge, Christine Brennan chronicles--for the first time--a season on the skating circuit,
intimately portraying the lives, on and off the ice, of the sport's current and upcoming stars.Woven into the narrative are stories of figure skating luminaries past, present, and future--including Peggy Fleming, Katarina Witt, Brian Boitano, Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan, Oksana Baiul, Michelle Kwan, Rudy Galindo, and Tara Lipinski.Revealing the backstage conflicts high-profile figure skaters face, and the ambition that drives them, Brennan also tells the stories of their families, of improbable rises to the top, and of wasted talents.

If skaters are perfect, they can become international heroes. But if they fall, if they miss a three-revolution jump on a quarter-inch blade of steel, the despair is theirs alone. This is their life on the edge, where decades of training culminate in little more than four crucial minutes on the ice. There is no other sport like it.There is no other story like theirs.

The figure skaters gathered slowly in the mahogany-paneled lobby of the majestic Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, New York, flashing no smiles, barely saying a word. The collection of gregarious entertainers had been reduced to silent, wide-eyed stares. The crackling wood in the fireplace made the room's only noise.

They had met in hotel lobbies in fancy street clothes hundreds of times in the past, but never for an event as devastating as this. On a cold night in late November 1995, they were to travel through snowswept Adirondack mountain roads to a nearby funeral home for a private wake for Sergei Grinkov, their colleague and friend who died of a massive heart attack during a skating practice the day before.Amazon.com Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
Lots of inside information about figure skating that most of us might never have guessed!A goodand fast read!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read
This book is now dated, figure skating is scored quite differently now, then it was when this book was written. The skaters in the book have long since been replaced by a current crop. Not being an "insider", I don't know how the "politics" of figure skating have changed, but I'd suspect that the "politics" is also at least a bit different from when the book was written.

Still, the book is an entertaining read into the world of figured skating in the '90's. The book introduces us to personalities and gives us some background on the famous personalities of that time period. It's interesting to contemplate that today's prominent figure skaters were just starting out when this book was written. In that regard, this book provides an interesting look at how today's prominent skaters were raised in the world of figure skating.

4-0 out of 5 stars fascinating
I thought Christine Brennan brought the lives of the skaters she followed in this book to life in such an interesting way that the book was hard to put down.I found myself totally involved, even knowing the outcome of some of the events she covered, I still was fascinated!Great job.Great book for anyone who loves this sport!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
My daughter, a figure skating coach, and I are on our 3rd copy: people keep borrowing this book and keeping it!

Brennan does a fine job debunking the "pretty girls in pink" myth about skaters, while still showing respect for the amount of effort and athleticism necessary to succeed in this sport. It's been said that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did - only backwards and in high heels.Well, figure skaters do everything other elite athletes do, backwards/forwards and in the air while maintaining an illusion of fragility.Brennan recognizes that dichotomy, which is why this is such a good book.

If you know skating from the inside, elite or simply local, you will recognize much of what she talks of.If you enjoy politics, read this for incredibly sharp double dealing and backstabbing. But always, read it for the beauty she evokes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty on Ice doesn't exist off the ice!
I have to say I was surprised by Christine Brennan's take on Tonya Harding. Tonya Harding is now a pariah in the world of American figure skating even though she helped many of today's figure skating athletes to become household names and wealthy as well. Tonya doesn't see any of it. It's ironic that Tonya Harding can't skate professionally while convicted rapist Mike Tyson is allowed to box but that's figure skating. Between the 1992 and 1994 Olympic Winter Games, the infamous incident by Nancy's clubbing by one of Tonya's hired goons caught everybody off guard. Poor Tonya, she was the girl from blue collar upbringing, divorced parents, and quite a dysfunctional childhood. I think if this was played out in Hollywood. Nancy and Tonya would have made up before the 1994 Winter Olympics and let it go down in history. No, the FBI was brought in. In the 1992 games, too much attention was paid on Nancy Kerrigan and the plight of her legally blind mother who later claimed that her daughter deserved the gold medal. In 1992, everybody including myself who watched the Olympic games knew about Nancy's poor mother. Nancy got more attention than Tonya and Kristi Yamaguchi who went to win the First Olympic Gold Medal for Ladies' Figure Skating since Dorothy Hamill. Still, she was shadowed by Nancy's blind mother. Since 1994, I became disillusioned when I saw figure skaters past judgment on Tonya Harding. I haven't lost respect for Jayne Torvill because she was actually quite ladylike in all retrospect. Sadly, Tonya was never the graceful skater but an excellent jumper who was the first American woman to land a triple axel. Tonya's happiness was short-lived by an abusive marriage and a US Figure Skating Association that cared more about maintaining a facade of a happy family. I didn't know that Nancy was not well-liked. YOu could have sure fooled me. Even now, Nancy is still the victim of a dumb plot. Had she had any sense, she would have forgiven Tonya and let it go but no it became a nightmare and a dream for the tabloids of the time. My respect for figure skating is gone. I am not surprised by the homosexuality in figure skating because it's so obvious but I wish they would just admit it rather than cover it up now. Even now, you just wonder why some aren't married or dating anybody. Anyway, the sport has changed for the worse in my opinion. It's become corrupted by greed, jealousy, and envy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This is, at best, a collection of news stories
This "bio" which was obviously hastily churned out right after the 1994 assault on Nancy Kerrigan, doesn't tell the reader anything that hasn't already been printed in news stories. It's doubtful that the writers even interviewed anyone in the Harding camp; for instance, they repeatedly refer to her mother as LaVona Golden, when the woman doesn't even use that name. A shameless attempt to cash in on the scandal. ... Read more
