The Distinguished Professor of Irish Literature at the University of Notre Dame will will read from his first novel, "Reading in the Dark," at 3 p.m. at Frank and Estella Beam Hall, Room 241. At 7:30 p.m. that evening, Deane will deliver a lecture on politics and literature in 20th century Ireland in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History. A member of the Royal Irish Academy, he also has served as a distinguished faculty member at a number of other universities in Ireland and America, including University College in Dublin and the University of California, Berkeley. Deane, along with with Nobel Laureate Seamus Haney, playwright Brian Friel, and actor Stephen Rea, is a founding member of the Field Day company of Northern Irish writers. Deane is the author of several important works of literary criticism, including "Celtic Revivals: Essays in Modern Irish Literature" and "A Short History of Irish LIterature." He also is the general editor of the seminal "Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing," the most complete collection of Irish writing ever assembled. In the area of creative writing, Deane has earned the AE Award for Literature and the American Ireland Fund Literary Award. "Reading in the Dark" (Knopf, 1997), has been called a "lyrically charged, breathtakingly sad and haunting story of one boy's childhood in the 1940s and 1950s Derry, a place where both ancient and modern myths collide with the harsh realities of everyday." "Reading in the Dark" was runner-up for last year's Booker Prize, awarded annually to the best British novel.

By analysing texts from different cultural and historical perspectives, students are encouraged to develop a critical approach to the literature. An additional aim of the course is to further the students communicative skills in the English language. CONTENT The course consists of a series of seminars, where the following genres are studied: the short story, the novel, drama, poetry, and film. Central themes in Irish literature such as politics, gender, and post-colonialism, will be explored against the historical and cultural background of twentieth-century Irish society. The course includes work by men and women writers, from both Northern Ireland and the Republic. FORMAT The course consists of obligatory seminars, in which students are expected to participate actively. All teaching is conducted in English.

Extractions: Ideas of the nation as the central model of social relations have exerted an overwhelming influence on the critical vocabularies available for Irish, British, and postcolonial literature. This nearly exclusive emphasis on national forms of belonging has proven vital, but it has also distorted the intersections between literature and community. Through an examination of three major contemporary Irish authors whose work resists the conflation of community and nation that has marked much critical study, "Communities of Difference" insists that community must be read in its own right rather than inevitably within the nation's rhetorical orbit. The first chapter argues that Paul Muldoon's poetry comes to understand community as a balancing act perpetually on the cusp between rootedness and disintegration, an act that rejects both a hierarchy among versions of home and the false choice between engagement and exile. With a poetic language in which "chaos and flux" are not a crisis but a way of being, a poem like "Immram" accepts rather than resolves the evanescence of roots and origins. In much the same way, the career-defining poem "7, Middagh Street" asks and answers questions about art's relationship to its communities precisely by refusing to provide a single answer.

LAWRENCE - Three siblings have donated $30,000 for the University of Kansas Libraries to acquire Irish literature in memory of their aunt, a former KU librarian, Keith Russell, dean of libraries, announced today. Cornelius J. Dwyer Jr. of New York City, Michael R. Dwyer of Le Mans, France, and Rosemary Dwyer Higgins of Monson, Mass., presented the gift to the Kansas University Endowment Association to endow the Rosemary A. McDonough Fund for Irish Literature, in honor of their aunt, Rosemary A. McDonough. "KU's holdings in Irish literature are among the finest in North America, and the McDonough Fund will help assure that this excellence can be sustained long into the future," Russell said. McDonough began her career at Washburn University, where she was an assistant professor in the economics department for 14 years. In 1969, she joined the KU library faculty and worked as a serials cataloger, an exchange librarian and a reference librarian until she retired in 1990. While at KU, McDonough was a member of several library and university organizations, including the KU Library Staff Association and the Faculty Senate Committee on Scholarly Publication. She also was the chairwoman of the Senex Human Relations Committee, secretary for KU's branch of the American Association of University Professors and co-chair of its Economic Status of the Profession committee. William J. Crowe, Spencer Librarian and former dean of libraries and vice chancellor of Information Services, remembered McDonough as "a talented professional and favorite of her colleagues in the library, as well as of the faculty and students who relied on her intelligence and enjoyed her wit."

Extractions: Thousands of pages of Irish literature in the Boston College Libraries are now more accessible to scholars, thanks to BC librarians who catalogued a major Anglo-Irish literature microfilm collection and placed records on more than 1,400 Irish serials on the Internet. O'Neill Library staff members made a significant contribution to international library records recently when they catalogued the Galway Resource for Anglo-Irish Literature, or GRAIL, a microform set containing hundreds of 19th-century Anglo-Irish literary works. The set was purchased by O'Neill Library 10 years ago, but its contents were largely unknown to library users. With the listing of 547 new bibliographic records in the Quest system, many of the titles in the set are now accessible at Boston College for the first time. The GRAIL cataloging was done by O'Neill Copy Cataloging Assistant Jeffery Jones and Cataloger Elizabeth Sweeney, recently appointed as librarian for the University's new Irish Music Center. The records have been included in the Online Computer Library Center's WorldCat, the world's largest and most comprehensive database of bibliographic information. "This is an important accomplishment for the BC Libraries," said University Librarian Jerome Yavarkovsky. "Beth Sweeney and Jeffery Jones have made hundreds of 19th-century microfilmed Anglo-Irish literary works accessible to scholars worldwide."
