Extractions: Email this page Print-friendly There are three forms of bearded iris: tall, intermediate and dwarf. Tall bearded iris are well-known to most gardeners in southern Australia. They tolerate alkaline as well as acidic soils soils and flower in late October through to late November, if planted in a sunny aspect. To obtain the intermediate form, a tall bearded variety is crossed with a dwarf variety, Since these crosses are usually sterile, a supply of parent stock will be needed from which to breed. Take pollen (male) from the dwarf flowers and store in the freezer or chiller. This is necessary because the two types don't flower at the same time. In November introduce the pollen to the female stigma of the tall bearded iris. The progeny exhibits the form of the female plant and the colour of the male plant. To get progeny the other way round, delay the flowering of the dwarf form by keeping a container grown plant in the chiller, so it flowers in October or November. This plant can then be pollinated by pollen from the tall bearded iris. The progeny will have the full colour range of the tall bearded iris from white, cream, yellow, mauve and purple. The more compact intermediates are popular where space is a consideration. They provide many flowers on shorter stems that can better withstand wind than the taller type. Intermediates flower from early October to mid Novemeber, with the full colour range of the tall varieties. Iris 'Whoop'em Up', featured, has the characteristic of setting many blooms at the same time).

Extractions: My bog garden has been an unqualified success this year and I'm quite pleased with this experiment in great gardening. Bog gardens are, as they might sound, for plants that thrive in very wet conditions and while it might boggle the imagination to ask why anyone would grow a swamp in their back yard, I'm declaring my intent to expand mine. To begin with, I built my first one as a raised bed of railroad ties piled two ties high. I lined the bed to the top of the first tie with construction grade plastic to hold moisture and filled the entire bed with peat moss. While mine is 24 feet long, you could build one out of a peat moss bag - bury the bag and cut the exposed side of plastic away from the bag leaving a sunken, five sided bag of peat moss or you could sink a old, child's swimming pool in the garden to accomplish the same thing. (Don't let the old child see you doing this.) However, you accomplish it, obtaining a wet zone in the garden is the first step in creating a bog. I've used peat as my soil because many, if not most, of the bog lovers also love a very acidic soil and damp peat fits this characteristic as well. Turn the hose onto the peat for quite a while before you even think of planting your first bog plant as the waxy peat resists soaking. Because I had only contained the water to half the depth of the bog, it took several weeks to get the top half of the peat thoroughly damp, even watering and turning it over every day. A day or two should take care of a sunken bag of peat.

Extractions: You may not know it, but you can have iris in your house, even in the dead of winter. Orris root, made from the powdered root of some European native iris, is used as a fixative in aromatic compounds such as potpourri. Its sweet, violet-like fragrance lasts and lasts, a quality that has been appreciated for millennia, particularly at times and in places where bad smells threatened to overpower everything else. Right now, the Siberian iris, which grow from rhizomes, are opening up ever so slightly ahead of the tall bearded iris. The contrast between the two species is marked. The German iris are bearded, while the Siberians are clean-shaven. The German have robust stalks while the Siberians sprout on slender stems. The Germans have big gaudy blossoms, while the Siberians are more subtle. Both types produce flowers in an array of colors, but the Germans come in a wider array. There are hundreds, if not thousands of named Iris germanica cultivars in every shade except true red. Only daylilies seem to be hybrized more often.

Extractions: Imagine lusciously scented flowers in colors that you can't get botanically any other way - blooming again and again - with next to no effort. Who wouldn't choose rebloomers if they had the choice? Reblooming iris are planted just like other rhizome-type (pronounced rye-zome) iris, in that vague space between just under and a bit over the soil. In other words, plant the bottom of the rhizome deep enough for the roots to grab with the top positioned so it can catch a few of the sun's rays. Iris will grow in the same spot for at least four years before needing dividing - so be sure to prepare the soil first. They also despise "wet feet." Choose a site in full sun with fast drainage and dig the bed about a foot down. Incorporate a generous amount of compost or other organic amendment. Toss in a handful of fertilizer low in nitrogen (stimulates green growth) and high in phosphorus (encourages blooms). Like other small perennials or annuals, plant at least three to get the best effect from that particular blossom. Space each rhizome 6 inches apart with the green "fans" facing in the direction you want the plant to spread.

Generally, they can be found growing along the coast from Santa Barbara on up to Oregon, with a few varieties growing in the mountains. Houseplants have a difficult time surviving in my household, so the logical solution was to dump even more time, effort, and money into growing outdoor plants. So far, I've tried a few roses and iris, as well as a broad variety of weeds. Here are some of the rose and iris results. Sorry, no photos of the weed collection are currently available. This is Iceberg , a white floribunda rose. Purchased from a local nursery and planted in late March of last year, the bush produced this first bloom in early May. This bloom is from one of four rose bushes in my yard. All four bushes survived an Alabama summer and my brown thumb, and they may be joined by a few more this year. Here is Peace , a hybrid tea rose whose demise I've managed not to cause for an entire year now. Based on a description I ran across recently, I believe this bearded iris' variety may be Wabash . If you can tell for sure, consider sending me a message to let me know. This bearded iris' variety is also unknown to me.

Among the most popular is the tall bearded type. Its "beard" is a furry stripe on each of three drooping, petal-like sepals, called falls. The true petals stand upright and are called standards. Bearded irises are available in a wide range of heights, from 6-inch miniatures to tall border types up to 30 inches. Despite size differences, all bearded irises grow from thickened, underground stems called rhizomes. Healthy rhizomes increase in size, and may eventually get overcrowded. To keep bearded and other rhizomatous irises blooming profusely, they should be divided every three to four years, according to Jan McNeilan, Oregon State University Extension Service consumer horticulturist. It is best to divide bearded iris in midsummer. Moisture-loving Siberian irises should be divided in spring or autumn. To divide irises, dig up an entire clump after it has bloomed. Using the garden hose, wash the soil off the thick rhizomes. Cut off dead flower stalks and shriveled leaves with a sharp knife. Cut back the remaining healthy leaves to about four to six inches long. Be sure to throw away, and burn if possible, any iris stalks and leaves showing signs of leaf or root diseases.
