Extractions: Do you get confused reading complex, technical books about attachment disorder? Do you wish you could find a basic book that you could give to relatives, teachers, and doctors to help them understand the problem? Would you like to educate others on the difficulties you face when parenting your child with attachment disorder? Then CHILDREN WHO SHOCK AND SURPRISE is for you. This book is designed to provide you with a brief, but complete, description of the causes and symptoms of attachment disorder, some useful parenting tactics, and the most effective treatment techniques. "Fascinating" and "Frightening" are two words that could aptly describe this book, much of which is based on the work of Dr. Foster Cline with unattached children at the Cline-Fay Institute in Evergreen Colorado. According to the preface, this book is about "America's future. It is about babies, parenting, genetics, and crime, and how they are vitally connected." Many of us have been shocked and disturbed by the countless reports recently of children and adolescents committing increasingly violent crimes, including vicious murders, with no apparent remorse. This book attempts to answer the questions of why this is happening and why now. The authors contend that many factors, including the changing roles of the American family, more mothers working outside the home, the child care crisis, the epidemic of teen-age pregnancies, high divorce rates, child abuse and neglect, a broken foster care system, and too-late adoptions, all are combining to create a generation of children who are angry and unattached.

Extractions: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AEA's Provide Transition Assistance into the Real-World for Students with Disabilities Summertime is the traditional time for recent high school graduates to begin searching for that all-important first job. But what if that recent student is a young adult who has had some sort of learning disability? What kind of future do these individuals face? The Iowa Area Education Agency (AEA) system helps students and their families to prepare students for this all-important transition from life as a student to the adult world. According to Greg York, Transition Consultant for Heartland AEA, "Entering the adult world as a student with physical or learning disabilities is a daunting process. For students with milder disabilities, there are many good entry-level jobs open, but I see kids bounce around from entry-level to entry-level job, and they have trouble moving up the ladder." According to data available from the Iowa Department of Education, one out of approximately every seven students in Iowa schools receives some form of assistance for learning or physical disabilities, which means a significant portion of each year's graduating class has needed some extra assistance in successfully completing their education.

Extractions: Mercy Health Center "Dubuquers like their beer..." was the headline that was generated by the local newspaper in response to the Healthy Dubuque 2000 survey data. This headline has been interpreted in two ways by local community members: The data from the Healthy Dubuque 2000 survey confirms the high incidence of alcohol consumption in comparison to State and national normative data. While an arguable point, task force members felt that high drinking rates are a reflection of the cultural norms of our community. Therefore, in order to change the alcohol consumption rates, our paradigms regarding alcohol consumption also need to change. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), alcohol is responsible for more than 100,000 deaths per year and is the leading cause of death for persons under age 21. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reports that in 1990, alcohol abuse cost the nation an estimated $99 billion. This cost includes the expense of treating substance abuse, the productivity loss caused by premature death and inability to perform usual activities, and costs related to crime, destruction of property and other losses. It also includes special conditions such as fetal alcohol syndrome. Based upon the figures in the Robert Wood Johnson report, the cost for alcohol abuse in Iowa is $1,081,749,366 or $387 per person per year.

Extractions: by Joan Seidman Welsh Acute teacher shortages in science, mathematics, and special education have had school districts scrambling to fill vacancies. At the same time, the population of students with disabilities continues to grow. From 1990 to 1995, the number of students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA ( http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSERS/IDEA In March of this year, final federal regulations for IDEA were published, and all states had to comply with them by October 1. As a result, many more students with disabilities have been moved out of self-contained special education environments into general education classrooms. This practice demands that teachers be knowledgeable not only in their subject areas, but also in strategies and methods for accommodating children with special needs. Curriculum Development in Teaching Science to Kids with Disabilities . Extractions: Bella Higdon sees it all the time: experienced teachers who are full of ideas on how to help special-needs children in their regular classrooms but don't know what to do for students who are intellectually gifted. ''It's like night and day,'' said Higdon, a professor of elementary and special education at Middle Tennessee State University who also conducts seminars for working teachers. ''They can't come up with ideas. It's much more difficult to differentiate the instruction on the upper-bound than on the lower levels.'' About 60 teachers are learning to do just that during a privately funded two-week academy for teachers now being held at MTSU. The Jennings and Rebecca Jones Academy for Teachers of the Gifted named for the Rutherford County couple who fund it is the only statewide program of its kind, Higdon said. The teachers, who stay in MTSU dormitories, spent the first week learning the theory of gifted education, including common characteristics of gifted children and how to adapt lesson plans to challenge highly intelligent students.

Increasingly, schools aren't responsible just for the intellectual health of children, but also their physical and emotional well-being. The point person for this care is the school nurse but with budget cuts and a pressure cooker environment, nurses are tough to find, and tougher to keep. Well, this is the job description for today's school nurse. Gone are the days when the school nurse dispensed Band-Aids and performed eye tests today's school nurse must be the jack and the master of many trades. There are 47,600 registered nurses employed as school nurses in America's public schools, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. School nurses are mandated in some states Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and West Virginia but not all. The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) recommends that there be one school nurse for every 750 children, but a University of Iowa study found that the ratio of children to nurses may be almost twice that nationally. In some states, that breaks down to just one nurse for every 7,000 kids.
