Extractions: Carolyn Pickel Carolyn Pickel is the Sacramento Valley Regional Integrated Pest Management (IPM) advisor for the University of California Cooperative Extension and the UC IPM Program. She is responsible for research and extension of pest management programs for crops grown in the Sacramento Valley. Her current program focus is on walnuts, prunes, almonds, and cling peach pests. Her research program includes pheromone technology, oblique banded leafroller biology and monitoring, and developing degree-day models for noctuid moths, including tomato fruitworm, cabbage looper, and beet armyworm that attack row crops. She has worked for the University of California Cooperative Extension since 1975 and for UC IPM since 1980 in the Central Coast until 1990 when she moved to the Sacramento Valley. Carolyn received both her B.S. and M.S. in entomology from UC Berkeley. The codling moth degree-day model she developed as her master thesis is still used today.

It has long been known that wormlike insects hiding inside nuts and dried fruits will succumb to heat generated by radio waves. Agricultural Research Service scientists and their colleagues are now taking a new look at using radio waves to control insects in these crops at packinghouses and processing plants. Researchers are evaluating the technology's potential use as a safe, effective substitute for methyl bromide fumigant. Methyl bromide is being phased out in the United States. Farmers expect to expand the planting of genetically modified crops in the United States this year, according to the results of a survey of farmers' intentions released by the Agriculture Department. Extractions: IPM utilization in row crops would be increased significantly if there was more use of monitoring techniques for pest and beneficial species. Tree crop growers and their PCAs have successfully utilized monitoring systems in their IPM programs for many years. However, many row crop growers have seen very little utility in monitoring systems. Unlike tree crops, the rapid turn-around time (generally only 60-120 days from planting to harvest) and very low threshold of tolerance for damage (especially for aesthetic blemishes) has created in growers and their PCAs a sense of urgency and the necessity to use pesticides in more of a prophylactic or preventative strategy than in a curative or reduction fashion. In reality, there are many opportunities in row crops to implement monitoring techniques. Detection devices such as sticky traps or bands and pheromone traps can alert growers to pest populations migrating into new fields from adjacent crops. In-field pest populations generally develop at the same rate as tree crop pest populations and allow ample time for monitoring and decision making to take place. This can be accomplished by a number of techniques including timed-search sampling, whole plant samples, beating trays, stationary trays and traps.

Extractions: Competitive Agricultural Systems in a Global Economy Consumers don't want bugs in their homes, on their food or in their yards. Chemical pesticides control insect pests and give us blemish-free produce, but there's a price to pay. When overused or misused, pesticides can pollute our environment and leave unwanted residues in food and feed. Repeated spraying can backfire when pests develop resistance to certain chemical controls. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Crop Management (ICM) programs help protect the environment, save producers money and preserve crop yield and quality. IPM strategies focus on scouting for pests and reducing pesticide use. ICM combines those practices with improved fertilizer management and farming methods. Land-Grant universities and the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offer IPM and ICM programs for farms, homes and industries. Cleaner cotton. Using Arizona Extension IPM methods, cotton farmers reduced insecticide spraying in 1999 to the lowest levels in 20 years. Cotton insecticide applications per season in Arizona dropped from more than 11 in 1990 to just one or two in 1999, reducing costs by more than 66 percent.

Extractions: Although it is questionable whether we could raise all crops without the use of pesticides, it is certainly true that we can reduce the amount of pesticides we use by careful and efficient use. There are some steps to consider before automatically turning to a pesticide. First, identify the suspect pest organism. There are literally thousands of species of insects, but relatively few species are harmful. Many sprays are mistakenly applied to control "pests" which turn out to be lady beetles or other beneficial predatory insects. Insects and diseased plants may be taken to your county Cooperative Extension office where they can assist in identification. Second, determine if control measures are really needed. While considerable scientific basis exists for making pest control decisions in commercial crops, pest control decision-making for home gardens and ornamentals becomes very subjective. Most crops can tolerate a considerable amount of insect damage before any yield loss occurs so garden crops generally do not need to be kept completely pest free. Frequent inspection of plants can tell whether pest levels are increasing or decreasing.

The data came chiefly from the 1996 Agricultural Resource Management Study (ARMS) developed by USDA. Because different pest classes may dominate among different crops and regions, requiring different pest management techniques to control them, the extent of adoption of pest management practices varies widely. For example, insects are a major pest class in cotton production, while minor for soybeans. As insect management has a wider variety of nonchemical techniques than weed control, cotton growers are expected to be further ahead on the IPM continuum than soybean producers.
