Extractions: This guide was constructed, by Sean Beckett and Tanis Stenback, to partially fulfill the requirements of a Library and Information Studies Internet course at the University of Alberta. Its intended audience is that body of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty who are actively involved in the study of anthropology. Go to Table of Contents Anthropology is the study of human beings. The word is derived from the ancient Greek anthropos (man) and logos (science study of). It is a holistic science in the sense that it encompasses all apsects of human life, including social behaviour, language, kinship, prehistory, material remains, and biology. Therefore, this discipline takes into consideration the research done in practically all academic fields relating to people, and applies it within an anthropological framework. It has traditionally been divided into four subdisciplines: archaeology, sociocultural , linguistic and biological (physical) anthropology. Links to resources in each subdiscipline are located below. How To Use This Guide Linguistic Anthropology ... Go To Top of Document This subject guide categorizes Internet resources in anthropology into four general sections: Archaeology, sociocultural, linguistic and biological anthropology. Within each discipline resources are included that provide information in a variety of different formats. Examples of these are listservs, newsgroups, and links to sites of anthropological interest. Listservs are discussion groups that are a means of implementing a forum for the exchange of ideas. They are very useful for keeping up to date in a particular field. To subscribe to a listserv discussion group the standard method is to send an e-mail message containing the following message: "SUBSCRIBE list-name your-first-name your-last-name." Newsgroups are similar to listservs in that they are a means of implementing discussion, but they are available through "news servers", that make information available to "news readers" who can selectively browse through messages to locate the discussion that they find of interest.

A History Of NativeWeb listservs on the Internet. The catalyst for NativeNet was a conference From theArctic to Amazonia Industrial Nations' Exploitation of indigenous peoples' http://www.nativeweb.org/info/paper.php
Extractions: A History of NativeWeb This is a collaborative work-in-progress documenting the history of NativeWeb, with contributions by NativeWeb board members Marc Becker, Carmel Vivier, and Peter d'Errico. Current version: January 16, 2002. Introduction to NativeWeb NativeWeb, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is the most widely recognized site on the internet for information about Indigenous peoples. It exists to utilize the Internet to educate the public about Indigenous cultures and issues and to promote communications between Indigenous peoples and organizations supporting their goals and efforts. With databases containing thousands of items, NativeWeb provides searchable access to materials in dozens of categories, forums for user-provided information and discussion, and a daily digest of reports about current news and events involving Indigenous peoples around the world. NativeWeb also provides selected Indigenous organizations with resources to create and maintain World-Wide Web sites of their own. Our purpose is not to "preserve," in museum fashion, some vestige of the past, but to foster communication among people engaged in the present and looking toward a sustainable future for those yet unborn. The content of NativeWeb at the moment is predominantly about the Americas, from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego. In time, this will change. As access to the Internet grows, as Indigenous peoples of other continents reach out through the Internet, NativeWeb will grow also. Already NativeWeb provides links to the Sami of Northern Europe, the Maori of New Zealand, and Aboriginal Peoples of Australia.

Lists are often moderated by a list owner, but this is not always the case; some lists are simply a free-for-all discussion, without a person filtering the messages. Most lists can be provided to the user either in a digest form or on a post-by-post basis - directions for choosing this setting will usually appear in the welcome message you receive once you've joined the list.
