Extractions: May 1996 PREFACE The inspiration for this Special Issue grew out of a meeting of consultants to the Heard Museum. Karen Swisher (Haskell Indian Nations University), Rayna Green (Smithsonian Institution), Tsianina Lomawaima (University of Arizona), and Brenda Child (University of Minnesota), were invited in 1995 by Curator of Fine Art Margaret Archuleta, under the auspices of a National Endowment for the Humanities Planning Grant, to help plan an exhibit on American Indians' boarding school experiences tentatively titled "Our Indian Schools" (scheduled to open at the Heard in the spring of 1999). We hope that this Special Issue will help stimulate continuing research, dialogue, and debate about American Indian people's experiences in, and opinions about, boarding school. It is clear that there is much that remains to be done. Large off-reservation schools, such as Sherman Institute in Riverside, CA, as well as many smaller schools, on and off reservations, remain undocumented. Most of the research to date has focused on the schools prior to World War II. The more contemporary era from the War to the present is wide open, inviting those with the interest and the commitment to help document, preserve, and understand the educational experiences of American Indian people. We are looking forward to what the future will bring. K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Guest Editor
Extractions: During April 4-May 17, 1994, the largest U.S. measles outbreak since 1992 occurred among students in two communities that do not routinely accept vaccination. This report summarizes the investigation of and control measures for this outbreak. All cases met the measles clinical case definition (1) and were epidemiologically linked to the boarding school and/or college. Fourteen cases were serologically confirmed by detection of immunoglobulin M antibody. All cases occurred among persons not vaccinated before the outbreak. Eighteen prospective students from outside St. Louis County attended a carnival at the boarding school on April 16; eight developed measles after returning home (three to Maine, two to California, and one each to Missouri, New York, and Washington). Two cases of serologically confirmed measles occurred in persons outside the Christian Science communities. One case occurred in an unvaccinated 35-year-old physician who attended a tennis tournament on April 30 where students from the affected college competed. The other case occurred in a 9-month-old infant who visited a restaurant on April 30 where the college tennis team was eating. Control measures included offering measles vaccine to students in the affected communities and isolating persons with rashes and those considered susceptible to measles. On April 19, the boarding school and college began isolating persons with rashes in a separate building on each campus and placing 24-hour guards at campus entrances. Only persons with proof of immunity to measles were permitted to enter or leave the campuses. Isolation measures on both campuses remained in effect until 14 days after the appearance of rash in the last persons with measles for each school.
Extractions: A total of 480 cases of mumps (epidemic parotitis) were reported among students attending 16 universities and colleges in three states where active surveillance was undertaken during the 1986-87 academic year. This report summarizes the investigations of these outbreaks. Illinois One hundred and eighty-three cases of clinically diagnosed mumps* were reported from 10 colleges and universities in Illinois during the 1986-87 school year. Detailed investigations, including interviews with patients, were conducted for three of these outbreaks, which totaled 123 cases. Four cases were serologically confirmed at the state laboratory by a fourfold or greater rise in hemagglutination inhibition antibody titer of sera taken during the acute and convalescent stages of illness. Western Illinois University, Macomb: From September 17, 1986, to February 25, 1987, 37 cases of parotitis were identified at Western Illinois University (WIU), which has a full-time undergraduate student enrollment of 8,912 (Figure 1). The attack rate among males (5.9/1,000) was 2.7 times higher than the attack rate among females (2.2/1,000) (95 confidence interval (CI) = 1.3, 5.5). In addition, the attack rate among students living in on-campus residence halls ( 6.5/1,000) was 8 times the attack rate among those in other forms of housing (0.8/1,000) (CI = 3.0, 21.6). Of the 36 patients for whom school class was known, attack rates were inversely related to the class level. These rates were 7.0/1,000 for freshmen, 4.2/1,000 for sophomores, 1.6/1,000 for juniors, and 1.5/1,000 for seniors (chi-square for trend, p less than0.001). A similar trend was observed for the subset of students living in dormitory housing (p less than0.03).

Lee County officials have sold the former county home for $500,000 to a controversial Utah group wanting to expand its chain of boarding schools. The sale is expected to be completed within a week. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA
Extractions: Summer 1999 Authors' note: This March, Debbie Reese (Nambe), a doctoral student who studies representations of Native Americans in children's literature, saw My Heart Is On the Ground: The Dairy of Nannie Little Rose, a Sioux Girl in a local bookstore. She picked it up, put it down in distaste, but then decided it couldn't be ignored. Reading through the book, she was outraged and called Beverly Slapin of Oyate and read excerpts to her. Beverly did not look forward to reading it herself. A day later and equally outraged, Beverly called it the "worst book she had ever read." Both women began talking about this book to colleagues. Debbie wrote to Barb Landis, a research specialist on Carlisle School, the Native American boarding school that is at the core of the book. Barb had also read the book and also felt it was an outrageous depiction of a tragic period in Native American history. We are fully aware we have used the word "outraged" three times in this piece so far, but there is no other word that captures the intensity of emotion we all feel about this book. A series of Internet and telephone discussions followed, and the circle grew to the nine women who are listed alphabetically below.
