Extractions: Our teacher education program course work and field experiences are designed to develop candidate knowledge, skills, and dispositions addressed in both the Idaho Core Teacher Standards and the Enhancement Standards. The pedagogical content knowledge, professional and pedagogical knowledge and skills, and dispositions addressed in the Enhancement Standards are developed in our teacher education program through the methods courses and field experiences specific to the teaching major or minor (e.g., elementary science methods, secondary biology methods, etc.). Candidates majoring in early childhood education, elementary education, library science, and special education take up to 20 credits of course work specific to the major. Secondary education majors take at least one content methods course specific to the teaching major. The alignment tables presented in the Program Reports accessed via the accreditation website show where in the teacher education program each of the Enhancement Standards is addressed.
Extractions: International Employment for Teachers Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Special Ed majors are required to dual certify in some area of education. (e.g. Elementary/Special Ed. Secondary/Special Ed or any other educational area of teacher certification.) How long will it take to get a dual degree? Assuming everything goes well and you start as a Freshman, it should take about 4 and a half years. However, all Special Education majors should work closely with their advisor to stay on track as the program has a particular sequence and many classes are offered only once a year. Will getting a Special Education Degree make me more marketable? It should. Currently, there is a shortage of certified Special Education teachers both nationally and in Idaho. The UI has an almost 100% placement rate for Special Education graduates who are willing to re-locate.
