Help Collection Development and Management by Meredith Osborn "It does not matter how many books you may have, but whether they are good or not." - Lucius Annaeus Seneca (3 B.C.-65 A.D.), Epistolae Morale According to Information Power (American Association of School Librarians and Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 1998) the mission of the school library media program is to "ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information." One goal of the school library is to provide intellectual access to information through learning activities that are integrated into the curriculum and that help all students achieve information literacy. A second goal is to provide physical access to information through a carefully selected, systematically maintained, and well organized collection of diverse resources. The purpose of the school library media center is to support the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the school within which the library functions. It does not exist to serve all members of the community, nor does it include in its collection something about every topic. However, the library's collection should be balanced in that it includes materials that support all areas of the curriculum, encompass all reading and ability levels of students at the school, and represent varying viewpoints on issues of opinion.
