Extractions: Increasingly, students are accessing online information where they once read articles in print format from subscription magazines. They are quick studies in the use of technology for finding information. With simple directions, they can cruise the Net, surfing multiple search engines to find gazillions of hits on any given subject. Unfortunately, they often come up confused and/or empty-handed as far as any kind of useful research to help them with their school projects. What might start out as a simple search for information about endangered species recently retrieved 96,512 hits in AltaVista, 362,209 hits in Excite, and 8 categories and 174 sites on Yahoo!. An advanced Web searcher is not daunted by these numbers and will proceed to narrow the search to discover some useful nuggets of information. Most students, however, lack that kind of patience and virtuosity. They flounder with the numbers of hits, often becoming distracted by commercial and inappropriate sites. In contrast to this serendipitous technique, one might use subscription online databases through the Internet. Increasingly, periodical and reference resources are made available through school library distributors. These resources contain the text and some images from the same print periodicals and reference books available at most school libraries. Periodical articles are selected by editorial boards of the magazines or reference books. For the most part, the information made available to students in this format is more reliable and authoritative than what an untutored search of the Internet might yield.

IHC's grant-making role is one of its most visible and important services as a state based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. However, over these years IHC has frequently extended its leadership to other types of service, locating funding and facilitating partners to help deliver innovative humanities programs to Idaho citizens of all ages. Examples of undertaken projects are: IHC has partnered with the Idaho State Library to bring the Lets Talk About It book discussion program to rural and small Idaho communities since 1985. Dozens of books in the LTAI collection are organized into twelve themes. Each participating library selects five titles on which to base their series. During 2002, over 1,300 people attended and 29 program scholars participated. IHC will be bringing "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future," a new traveling exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) to Idaho in 2004. "Yesterday's Tomorrows" is part of the Museum on Main Street program, a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils with rural America.
