Huntington's Disease (HD) is an inherited progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Although onset of Huntington's Disease usually occurs in adulthood, the age of onset of the condition is extremely variable with approximately 5-10% of cases having an onset of less than 20 years, or Juvenile Huntington's Disease (JHD). While JHD shares many of the clinical features of adult HD (e.g., chorea and personality disorders), patients with JHD often experience additional problems including seizures, dystonia, and Parkinsonism. Diagnosis in patients with JHD is often delayed because of the failure of clinicians to recognize the characteristic features of the condition. While several textbooks have been published on HD, no books have been published to date focusing solely on the juvenile onset form of the disease. This book summarizes, for the first time, the clinical and scientific knowledge available on JHD. It also collects together accounts from families affected by the condition, putting the clinical and scientific chapters into context.

A Heart-Grabber
A New Promise grabbed my heart from the first page and kept me turning the pages.Julie is a gifted writer who has given her characters so much credibility they seem real, like people I know.I didn't want to say good-bye at the end of their story!

Her knowledge of medical subjects, particularly Huntington's Disease hits the mark--especially if you or someone you love has had to deal with this or some other tragic illness.Hope shines through even in the darkest moments with the message that in the absolute worst situations, God is still able to redeem and transform lives.

Just Okay
Christian fiction was not exactly what I had in mind when I ordered this book.Was a little to soft for my taste and moved to slowly.However, I was stirred by the moving reality of huntington disease and the loved ones left to make the final decision of whether the aflicted live or die.

Mesmerized by the writing style
In A New Promise, Julie Eller masterfully creates an inspiring tale. A rural family has been given a tragedy they must grapple with every day of their lives.I felt for each character as they dealt with the pain and decisions made, and those needing to be made.Eller's prose is rich and the story line kept me in suspense.

Looking to God for help!
A NEW PROMISE is a novel filled with emotion, trials, love and and fulfillment of satisfaction knowing that God will take control if invited to. Julie Eller has outdone herself fulfilling every aspect of living with an onset of misgivings and trials in the scenario of a hurting family to a finality of love and understanding. Every page turned brought new aspirations and tears in the final control lost to the love of God.

I was so intrigued by Julie's writing that I could not put the book down. Everyone should check out her new book.

A relevant story for today
This is a "can't put it down" read with something for everyone. There is the husband/father, Scott, dealing with the responsibilities of his families farm, his wifes illness, and raising two teenagers alone. The Grandmother, Catherine, with her own losses and bitterness, and Celeste, a single woman with a promising career, and yet still searching. The teenagers in the story, Tawnya and Ty,are working thru real issues that face teens today. This is a book that most anyone at any stage in life, from teen to grandparent, would enjoy and find relevant. There is such a message of hope and truth woven throughout the story! What a great book. Entertaining, informative, and inspiring
It's very refreshing to read a novel that is so well grounded in science and real life. This book has all the fictional elements of a great novel, yet you learn some things about science along the way through the book. I particularly liked the section on Congressional testimony. And I can personally relate to some of the nursing home scenes.

A good read AND informative!
Ricki Lewis' novel is the story of a young science writer who, as a hospice volunteer, finds herself inexplicably helping a patient with an incurable disease. It is current both in terms of discussing the science of the stem cell technology we hear so much about these days, but also in its musical references, like U2 and Coldplay (two artists included in a recent planetarium show I visited in the Rose Space Center in NYC.) There is a love interestwith a twist, and I found myself gripped by the unknowns presented in the thickening plots.The cast of characters was eccentric but believable. Their actions felt so real sometimes, I found myself wondering ifportions of the story were based on real events.

What I perhaps liked the best was that the upliftingending suggestedthat the miracle of art (in this case music) can inexplicably have a profound scientific effect on our bodies in ways we have perhaps not yet discovered. If there are not medical researchers out there testing out Dr. Lewis' "novel" hypotheses- thereshould be!

I found myself learning about science while enjoying the story.

This was a good read- I highly suggest it!

I learned a lot from this book.Woven into the action is easily understandable explanations of stem cell research and Huntington's Disease.Dr. Lewis has her characters believeably interact as Hospice volunteer, patient and health care professionals.I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of new information that I was able to take out of the reading of the book.

Emotion recognition from both face and voice and experience of emotions were investigated in a group of non-symptomatic people at risk of carrying the Huntington's disease gene who presented for genetic testing. Based on the results of the DNA test, a group of people carrying the Huntington's disease gene (HD+), and a group of non-carriers (HD-) were formed. Since we were especially interested in the time course of possible deficits in emotion recognition, all people at risk were reassessed 6 and 12months after the initial assessment. Recognising facial expressions of disgust was significantly impaired on all three assessments in the HD+ group, while recognition of vocal emotions and the experience of emotions were largely unaffected, confirming that deficits in recognition of facial expressions of disgust are an early correlate of carrying the gene for Huntington's disease.
