Product Description
This text looks at: hands and feet; eyes; ears; senses; the skeleton; joints; muscles and movement; skin; fingerprints; hair; teeth; breathing; digestion; the heart; growth and measuring; and healthy living. This title is one of a series designed to allow young readers to develop their scientific knowledge through an experimental/imaginative approach. Each spread will open with an information page on the left, with a photograph and related text introducing a key topic. On the facing page, a related activity, again illustrated with photographs, will provide "hands-on" opportunities for the children to explore the given topic themselves. Together, the books in the series will cover life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes. The emphasis will be on science as part of everyday life, and the text, though simple, will introduce key scientific vocabulary. Safety will be emphasized throughout. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and stimulating but sorta missed the mark
This is a cute book with neat facts, but the light up body...sort of misses the mark. When it says that it will light up the nervous system, it just lights up the brain. I guess thats the biggest part, but I was expecting a little more accuracy, of course its interesting for any little one. :) Im probably just to picky.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful bood for your young learners!
This book is a wonderful learning tool for your little ones! I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter and she loves it!Every night we read a different section from the book, and she hates when its time to put it down and go to bed. there are fun illistrations and the disney characters help to tell all about the whay the body works. We lost her book at one point and I had to buy a replacement for her:)Definetly a #1 in our House! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars quite well done
Me kids are fascinated by this book and they retain the information! the clear, see through, cut away pages are very helpful for them to understand how their bodies work. I have a 5 and a 2and a half year old, they love it. Only 4 stars because its on the small size, I wish it was a bit bigger so they could both enjoy it at the same time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point for teaching your kids about the human body.
I remember being little and spending hours studying the transparent overlay pages of the human body in our encyclopedia volumes. My kids (4 and 6) have been asking more questions about body parts and functions, so I wanted to find a book for them that was age-appropriate and had transparent overlay pages. I was so excited to find this book in a used bookstore. It has met our needs perfectly (for the time being) and my kids love it. We have had it for about a month, and they study it every day. They each have favorite parts of the book - my daughter, for example, loves the section in which the development of a fetus is described - and based on their favorite sections, we can go look up more information on the internet or in other books. Like I said, it's a great starting point that will lead to further discovery! I look forward to seeing what the other "First Discovery Books" have to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids, 3 and 5, loved the book
For the sake of safety, I think one cannot stress to their kids enough the importance of keeping private parts covered. I cannot count how many people I know who've been molested in some way, and stats on that only increase. Certianly I was happy about the interest my kids (boy, age 3, girl, age 5) showed in learning about the inner workings of their bodies.
I was also happy that I could point out that the book also reminds us that private parts are private and stay covered. "It's important to learn about how they work, but also important only to discuss them or examine them with Mommy, or Daddy, or the doctor, but no one else." Right now my kids associate this 'privacy' with the privacy they want when going to the bathroom. As they mature, I will explain to them the intimate relationship one can have with another, which includes 'use' of 'private parts'....and they will already naturally have a sense that this intimacy is not appropriate with just anyone; certainly not with an uncle, or a stranger, or even just a casual friend. Any inappropriate touch, talk, or looking will already be uncomfortable for well-informed kids.

As far as the other information in the book, learning about our bones made my son want to dress as a skeleton for Halloween. Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The originalillustrated version is available in English!
As many happy readers have pointed out, this is a beautifully illustrated book which provides a wonderful introduction to children about what lies beneath their skins.

Howeevr, for those who were disappointed in the censored edition, take heart. The original version (without the 'panties') is available in English. I just bought a copy for my grandson at the gift shop of the Tate Modern Museum in London. When I got home I checked the Amazon UK site, and the same edition is available there.

So...if you're willing to pay a little extra for postage from the UK, you and your children should be able to admire this book in its original format. Well worth it, if you ask me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book...but why so small??
My grandson enjoyed this book I had sent to him, but his mother and I were disappointed that the book was so small.I expected it to be bigger so that small children could look at bigger pictures.Bigger overlays on bigger pages would have a much better impact on young minds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Exam Review
This book is presented in a easy to understand, colourful and informative manner.

As a third year medical student I have to say that book seems to be aimed at those who are new to anatomy, and to these people this book would prove very helpful in gaining an insight into human anatomy. It is presented so as divide the body intosystems, which in most medical schools today is outdated, with them preferring a more integrated clinical approach.Having said this, the use of the book is heightened by the inclusion of X-ray pictures, Ct scans and surface anatomy references. The text is pretty limited, but in most atlas' this is the case.

Although this book is definitely not on the same level as the more comprehensive atlas', like those of Grant, and does not provide the same level of factual information as Snell's Clinical Anatomy, it is a well presented, easy to read book which I think would be very useful as a quick glance guide prior to examinations ... Focusing on what it means to be human from a biological perspective, this new title is visually stunning and enjoyable to read. Color micrographs highlight the beauty of structures within the human body, while photographs and paintings emphasize the whole person and transcend the boundaries between art and science. Rather than providing numerous details and describing the human body as a machine, the focus is primarily on key concepts and universal human experiences. This unusual and novel approach is designed to capture readers' imaginations and help them understand in a unique way what it means to be human. ... Read more

Product Description
The authors discuss the processes of decay and look at the myths surrounding the preservation of the famous (such as Lenin, Abraham Lincoln and Eva Peron). They go on to discuss bodies preserved in bogs and how they came to be there, and examine one of the oldest methods of preservation - mummification - looking not only at the famous ancient Egyptian examples but also the earliest-known mummies of the Chinchorro people from South America, as well as others from Mexico, China and Europe. They also look at the preservation of bodies as a result of freezing and bodies preserved in outline form, such as those of Pompeii and Sutton Hoo, as well as discussing ethical issues such as preservation, exhumation and research on preserved bodies. The book ends with an examination of modern preservation methods and humanity's perennial search for immortality through techniques such as cryonics, cloning, DNA and suspended animation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Students love it!
My middle school science students love this book! Bog bodies are my favorite subject when teaching science so this book was a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars ....and to dust thou shalt return.
An excellent account of what mankind, through its long history, has done with the remains of its deceased. Through what has been found, over the years,we have tried to piece together the cultures, religions, eating habits, diseases and every aspect of life by the peoples who have preceeded us.The little that we know has,to a large degree, been determined from clues presented when remains have been found. For such a relatively short book,of only 206 pages, including many excellent photographs, the authors have done an amazingly good job in describing what was done with the bodies, both intentionally and unintentionally, that have resulted in some remains being intact for ,not only hundreds ,but thousands of years.
Is it the fear of death, the fear of the unknown, the desire to honor and remember;or some underlying desire for everlasting perpetuity;that has challenged mankind and cultures to find a way for remains to be everlasting? That remains an unanswered question that has been with all civilizations and cultures;and as so well shown in this book;will likely remain, well into the future. One can only imagine how cluttered the world would get if a simple method of preserving a body forever, were ever found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the past through the dead
If you are interested in anthropology, archaeology, mummy studies, or pre technology man, this is a good book. The detailed descriptions of the remains, good pictures, and summaries of the scientific studies is very informative. This book is hard to get.I bought the last available copy in the US when I bought it for my Mummies of the World class.I highly recommend if you want to learn more about the remains of our ancestors and what the bodies can tell us, this is one of the best books for the job. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars BAD CHOICE FOR CHILDREN
This book is excessively candid on sex education for children. This book is presented as a children's book but the sex education in this book is more geared for a teenager. Additionally, I believe most parents would prefer, and do better jobs at explaining, the subject of sex to their teenager than this book does. The Usborne Complete Book of the Human Body: Internet Linked (Complete Books)

5-0 out of 5 stars Cross between encyclopedia and coffee table book.
This book is child friendly without feeling young.Attentive, interested elementary kids would enjoy it without it seeming too educational, and yet it would help even high schoolers understand their studies.I use it for home schooling.
It has a way of explaining complicated biology in a way that children understand, without dumbing down the process. It's interesting enough to keep a kid's attention and the vivid labeled diagrams with cross sections, plentiful photos and microscopic blow ups are part of what make it so wonderful.
The internet links are interesting and helpful again for school work. They are kept up to date by Usborne so that they can't be expired site leads.New sites are constantly being added by Usborne. You only need to go to the Usborne site, type in the title of the book and the page you were reading and you are directed to current sites on the subject, or even on tangents of the subject. It's your choice how much you research.

It's like a cross between an encyclopedia and an enjoyment book. The chapters are organized by systems.(digestive system, nervous system, etc.) Yet anyone could pick it up and flip through to something that catches their interest.
It's just another great Usborne book. They're so successful because they test each aspect of the book with kids before publication to see how they like to learn and what makes it interesting to keep learning.Even the page layouts add to the books appeal.
You can't go wrong with this one. ... Read more
