Description:
The Italian territory has been the object of several studies devoted to the analysis of seismicity and to earthquake precursors' research. Although a number of observations have been claimed to precede large earthquakes, only few systematic studies have been carried out and almost no test of their performances is available up to now. In this paper, we review the application to the Italian territory of two formally defined intermediate-term middle-range earthquake prediction algorithms, namely CN and M8S. The general methodology common to the two different algorithms makes use of general concepts of pattern recognition that permit to deal with multiple sets of seismic precursors, and allows for a systematic monitoring of seismicity, as well as for a widespread testing of the prediction performances. Italy represents the only region of moderate seismic activity where the M8S and CN algorithms are applied simultaneously for routine monitoring. Significant efforts have been made to minimize the intrinsic space uncertainty of predictions and the subjectivity of the definition of the areas where precursors should be identified. Several experiments have been dedicated to assess the robustness of the methodology against the unavoidable uncertainties in the data. With these results acquired, starting in July 2003, an experiment was launched for the real-time test of M8S and CN predictions. ... Read more

Description:
The photocatalytic oxidation of two selected organophosphorous insecticides (dichlorvos and dimethoate) has been investigated. The aim of the study was the identification of the intermediates that are formed during photocatalytic treatment. Intermediate products from the slurry system were identified by means of solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy techniques (GC-MS). Nine possible by-products were identified for dimethoate and three for dichlorvos. A proposed degradation pathway for each insecticide is presented, involving mainly oxidation and dealkylation reactions. The results demonstrated that some of the transient intermediates formed (oxon derivatives, disulfide, chlorinated fragments), were more toxic compared to parent compounds whereas most of them are less toxic than the parent compounds. ... From the author: A comparison of glass transition temperatures measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) was made using microlayer composites with many alternating layers of two polymers. What appeared to be a third transition at a temperature intermediate between the glass transitions of the two components was observed in DMTA but not DSC. The mechanical origin of this intermediate damping peak in the layered composites was established. The viscoelastic properties of each polymer were modelled by a spring and dashpot in series, and the composite as a parallel arrangement of two Maxwell elements. It was shown that an anomalous damping peak can appear between the glass transition temperatures when the modulus of the composite can not drop below the modulus of the glassy layers, although the viscosity of the composite continues to be defined by the viscosity of the rubbery layers in this temperature range. The intermediate damping peak may be a general feature in the dynamic mechanical behavior of co-continuous multiphase systems including polymer blends and continuous fiber composites.

Description:
Hatching stage crab larvae will ingest algae, including non-toxic and toxic dinoflagellates. We determined that later zoeal stages, obtained from both laboratory-raised larvae and natural assemblages, also ingest dinoflagellates and we measured the effects of prey density, prior feeding history and time of exposure to prey on incidence of ingestion. Both stage 1 and later stage larvae exposed to algal prey were examined using epifluorescence for the presence of chl a. Both stage 1 and stage 3 laboratory-raised Cancer oregonensis (Dana) and Hemigrapsus nudus (Dana) ingested both the non-toxic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum micans Ehrenberg and the toxic Alexandrium andersoni Balech, with no difference between the stages. Both species showed higher ingestion of P. micans than A. andersoni. Ingestion of both prey types occurred at prey densities as low as 200 cell ml^-^1 in C. oregonensis and 50 cells ml^-^1 in H. nudus. Samples collected in summer, 2004, provided both stage 1 and late stage Lophopanopeus bellus (Stimpson); stage 1, intermediate, and late stage Fabia subquadrata Dana; and an unidentified porcellanid. Stage 1 L. bellus ingested both prey, while late stage zoeae did not, although the latter apparently were not actively feeding. F. subquadrata fed on both prey, with no difference between early and late larvae. Both stages ingested P. micans more readily than A. andersoni. First evidence of ingestion of P. micans at 600 cells ml^-^1 occurred after only 0.5 h, while it took 2 h for ingestion at 50 cells ml^-^1. The model of larval feeding involving both omnivory and prey discrimination described previously for the hatching stage is sustained throughout zoeal development and is, perhaps, an adaptation to an uncertain prey environment, one that trades opportunism for inefficiency. ... Description:
Fourth semester students of Spanish as a foreign language at the university level in the US participated in two kinds of comprehensible-input based instruction, an extensive reading class that combined assigned and self-selected reading, and a ''Reading-Discussion'' class that consisted of assigned reading, debates and discussions. Students in both classes outperformed those in a traditionally taught class on a check-list vocabulary test and on a grammar test. The Reading-Discussion group outperformed the Traditional students on a cloze test (P=0.105), but there was no difference between Traditional and Reading students on the cloze. The results confirm the efficacy of comprehensible-input based pedagogy at the intermediate level. ... Read more

Description:
A new piston core from Santa Barbara Basin, California provides evidence of the timing, magnitude, and character of deglaciation, including evidence of warming prior to Termination IA. IMAGES Site MD02-2503 (570m water depth) consists of intermittently laminated hemipelagic sediments extending to Interstadial (D/O) event 6 (~34ka), that accumulated at ~135cm/ka. During the deglacial episode (16.75-10ka), @d^1^8O values decreased by 3.2%% in the planktonic species Globigerina bulloides, indicating a total warming of 8-9^oC recorded by surface-dwelling foraminifera (inferred by removing the 1%% influence of ice volume change). Similarly, benthic species (Bolivina argentea and Uvigerina peregrina) record a 1.65%%@d^1^8O decrease across the deglacial, interpreted as a 2-3^oC warming at upper intermediate depths. @d^1^8O values of both planktonic and benthics indicate that surface and intermediate waters began to warm ~2ka prior to Termination IA, beginning at ~16.5ka. Intermediate water warming exhibits similar structure and synchronous timing with surface waters. These findings are consistent with a growing number of records from around the globe that exhibit pre-Bolling warming prior to Termination IA, and extends the record of such processes to the northern Pacific. ... Description:
The sequence of Termination II, from the end of marine isotopic stage 6 (MIS 6) to MIS 5e, is observed through an isotopic study (@d^1^8O) of planktic and benthic foraminifera in core MD99-2331 (42^o09'N; 09^o41'W), collected in the North Atlantic, on the Iberian margin. First, to build an approximate time scale, a record of the planktic @d^1^8O signal is achieved from the top of the core (Holocene) to MIS 6. The remarkable similarity of this planktic record to the Greenland Ice Core Project ice core @d^1^8O record allows a rough dating of our core. A focus on Termination II reveals one ''standstill'' in the benthic record. This ''pause'' can be linked either to a perturbation of North Atlantic oceanic circulation pattern, as a slowing down of the North Atlantic Deep Water formation, or to an interruption in polar ice sheet melting, which could be a more global phenomenon. ... From the supplier: Pending federal legislation would impose intermediate sanctions on officers, directors, trustees or other persons related to an exempt organization that engage in excess benefit transactions with the organization. The sanctions take the form of excise taxes imposed on the disqualified person and on the organization. The intermediate sanctions are intended to be less severe than withdrawal of tax-exempt status. Transactions potentially subject to these sanctions include compensation, as well as loans and acquisitions.
