Product Description
Herbert Hoover - President of the Great Depression is the biography of Herbert Hoover, the thirty-first President of the United States (1929-1933), a mining engineer and humanitarian administrator. As the United States Secretary of Commerce in the 1920s under President's Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge, Hoover promoted economic modernization. Hoover easily won the Republican Presidential nomination in 1928. The nation was prosperous and optimistic, leading to a Hoover landslide over Democrat Al Smith, a Catholic whose religion was distrusted by many. Hoover deeply believed in the Efficiency Movement (a major component of the Progressive Era), arguing that there are technical solutions to all social and economic problems. That position was challenged by the Great Depression, which began in 1929, the first year of his presidency. He tried to combat the Depression with volunteer efforts and government action, none of which produced economic recovery during his term. The consensus among historians is that Hoov ... Read more

This book is so short you can read it in less than 2 or 3 minutes. You could probably Google Herbert Hoover and get more information about what he did in the great depression. This book is not much more than a pamphlet. ... Read more

Product Description
Biographical profile of Herbert Clark Hoover, 31st President of the United States, a man whose reputation as one of the world's greatest humanitarians plummeted with the advent of the Great Depression during his administration. Prior to his presidency, Hoover was lionized by many for saving millions of lives in Europe during World War I. Even FDR said: “He is certainly a wonder, and I wish we could make him President of the United States. There could not be a better one.” But after Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, heralded the steepest economic decline America had ever seen, Hoover's name became associated with all the ills that plagued the nation. Hoovervilles, Hoover blankets, Hoover flags, even Hoover leather, characterized the growing ranks of the poor and unemployed. Award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef tells Hoover's story, the rise and fall of an American President and the light and darkness of an American presidency.[2,827-word Titans of Fortune article] ... 1-0 out of 5 stars More information off of wikipedia
Don't overlook the fact that this is less than a 3,000 word article. The content couldn't have been any lighter. I got no new or usable information for a research paper I'm writing. I was hoping to fill in the period of time when Hoover was the Secretary of Commerce. That section was glossed over with a sentence. The whole text would not have filled up five full size pages. Save your three dollars... it isn't worth a dime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Biographical Profile
Herbert Hoover was a great humanitarian; he fed more than a quarter of the Europe's population after World War I. Even FDR thought he would make a great president. Unfortunately Hoover's timing couldn't have been worse; the Great Depression hit during his administration. President Hoover, like the proverbial Dutch boy, plugged the whole in the economic dam with his finger. The result was foretold, but Hoover was not the cause of the Depression and, given the economic and financial systems then in place, could not have averted it. It is highly doubtful anyone, even FDR, would have known or understood its magnitude and taken action at the onset of the Depression to avert it. Author Daniel Alef does an excellent and unbiased job of telling Hoover's story. Kudos to Alef.

1-0 out of 5 stars book non-synopsis
What?It would kill the editors to provide even a brief and cursory synopsis of the topic and thesis of this book?Does this shadowy publisher also actively engage in the sale of blind canines for the blind and perhaps soundless home invasion alarm systems for those living in high crime areas?I'm a fan of Mr. Hoover's great Humanity although the self-made millionaire "wonder boy" of the mentally inert Coolidge ("Keep Cool with Coolidge IF Cal can stay awake.") Adminstration seemed embarrassingly overwhelmed, confused and baffled by the obvious Laissez fair economic causes of the very preventable FINANCIAL COLLAPSE of October, 1929; over-speculation, runaway credit, ridiculous high debt to low income savings ratio and irresponsibly mismanaged banking institutions. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it!Was the entire country completely oblivious that all booms eventually reach critical mass and bust?Oh, you thought I was referring to the 1920s? ... Product Description
Organized around the office of the president, this study focuses on American behavior at home and abroad from the Great Depression to the onset of the end of the Cold War, two key points during which America sought a re-definition of its proper relationship to the world. Domestically, American society continued the process of industrialization and urbanization that had begun in the 19th century. Urban growth accompanied industrialism, and more and more Americans lived in cities. Because of industrial growth and the consequent interest in foreign markets, the United States became a major world power. American actions as a nation, whether as positive attempts to mold events abroad or as negative efforts to enjoy material abundance in relative political isolation, could not help but affect the course of world history. ... Product Description
A woman of intelligence and energy, Lou Henry Hoover's talents benefited a large number of cultural and philanthropic organizations, but her distaste for publicity obscured her many achievements until now. By the time her husband reached the White House in 1929, she had already established herself as a woman with high goals. The first woman to earn a university degree in geology, she collaborated with her husband in the translation of a classic book on mining methods. During World War I, she organized assistance for American travelers stranded in Europe, campaigned on behalf of the Commission for the Relief of Belgium, and set up a boarding house in Washington D.C. for young women working in war-related agencies. ...
