Book was in very good shape for the money - especially considering the price the colleges charge

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!
I had my doubts about purchasing my book on Amazon because of soaring identity thefts. I was pleased that the process went smoothly. Also, my book was in perfect condition! Amazing!!! When I purchased my book something went arie and the purchase did not go through. I thought: the mess-up will definitely happen here. But to my surprise it went flawlessly!!! Because this was my first experience with Amazon and I was pleased, i'll definitely check them out next semester and tell others about my experience. KEEP IT UP AMAZON!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars neat!
This was assigned as supplemental reading in an American History class i took. I actually ended up reading the whole thing! Excerpts from various documents throughout history, such as the diary of Martha Washington for example. There are a lot of neat narratives in this book that give you the more humanistic side of history.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
The book that "I thought I purchased" was not the book that I received! and the seller doesnt take returns

4-0 out of 5 stars Much needed book
I wasn't to happy about how long it took the book to get to me, but I got it just in time for my class.

5-0 out of 5 stars great primary docs
This is an excellent collection of primary documents suitable for research or class use. A couple of people left seller reviews inappropriately. These are supposed to be book reviews. Should leave feedback only for the individual sellers. It really messed up the ratings for this great book needlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Reading the American Past' Review
I would bought this book even without my history teacher, because it contains very fascinating documents, that would change the view of past, present, and future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Annoyed
So I never received the book. According to the seller they ran out of stock. I needed the book for this Monday and apparently they told me the bad unfortunate news 4 days later. Not Cool and a bit unprofessional.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT HAPPY
Never received book not happy at all. Will never order from seller again. Very poor service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent documents from America's past
This is a fascinating collection of American history. It starts with a Viking voyage around the year 1000, then Columbus and Vespucci, lots of documents from the early settlers in the 1600s, then the war for independence, the wars and other events of the 1800s, and ends with the Panama Convention of 1904. Great stuff for anyone even remotely interested in America's first three centuries. The table of contents is active. ... Read more

This volume offers a rich sampling of correspondence from the Dutch Immigrant Letter Collection at Calvin College. Sent from immigrants to friends and family in the Netherlands, the letters describe the writers' new lives and the daily experiences of becoming American.

"Dutch American Voices is a wonderful scrapbook that should be a part of every library in the Midwest and every home of those Americans of Dutch ancestry. Brinks should be commended not only for this volume but also for a lifetime of collecting and preserving this precious legacy in the Dutch Immigrant Letter Collection at Calvin College. His work is a labor of love as well as a service to scholarship."--Michigan History Magazine ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Remembrances of What Could Happen Again!
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, there were long-standing disagreements until the early 1940s; the Cold War was a bitter, usually non-military conflict for fifty years after WWII.It resumed in 1945, Korean War and Vietnam. As a result, the United States and Soviet Union were always "racing" for arms including nuclear weapons. In the '50s, a climate of fear causing internal instability in the U. The roots of the Cold War lay deep in our past.Russia's miliary power grew and the Soviet Union was developed; consequently, communism was their religion. An uneasy stalemate lasted until 1933.The Great Depression in America caused enemies to become friends there for a time.Stalin vs. Hitler, U.S. Great Britain and Soviet Union formed the grand alliance.Americans believe in the principles of liberty, equality and opportunity.U. In 1950s, scientists created new thermonuclear weapons -- hydrogen bombs, which were much more powerful the atomic bomb.Russian Sputnik circled the globe in 1957.Margaret Chase Smith promoted a "Declaration of Conscience" in 1954 as she censured Joseph R. McCarthy's use of hate and character assassination.David Alman, novelist and playwright, promoted the Broadway play, 'The Crucible,' as a parable of McCarthyism. He felt it was "really about the Rosenbergs."McCarthy destroyed many careers and reputations, like Alger Hiss who was proven not guilty of any offence.

In 1962 a film of Richard Condor's novel, "The Manchurian Candidate" was clearly a product of the cold war.Every American will be forced to have to stand up and be counted to say whether they are on the side of rights and freedom or on the side of the traitors of this country.Mrs. Hood would tell me to vote "right" I'd say that "I always vote right."But our versions of choosing sides during the cold was may have differing consequences. You see, she voted "party" and I voted "individual."

After serving in the military for 52 years and being publicly reprimanded by then U. S. President Truman, my hero General of the Army Doughas Mas Arthur stood up to his honor and deep Christian faith. He returned to New York City to a huge celebration where he proclaimed that "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away."And as a man of his words, he did as he promised"I shall return."As a child I had a metal statuette which my dad brought home from his years in the U. Product Description
The laws that governed the institution of slavery in early Texas were enacted over a fifty-year period in which Texas moved through incarnations as a Spanish colony, a Mexican state, an independent republic, a part of the United States, and a Confederate state. This unusual legal heritage sets Texas apart from the other slave-holding states and provides a unique opportunity to examine how slave laws were enacted and upheld as political and legal structures changed. The Laws of Slavery in Texas makes that examination possible by combining seminal historical essays with excerpts from key legal documents from the slave period and tying them together with interpretive commentary by the foremost scholar on the subject, Randolph B. Campbell. Campbell's commentary focuses on an aspect of slave law that was particularly evident in the evolving legal system of early Texas: the dilemma that arose when human beings were treated as property. As Campbell points out, defining slaves as moveable property, or chattel, presented a serious difficulty to those who wrote and interpreted the law because, unlike any other form of property, slaves were sentient beings. They were held responsible for their crimes, and in numerous other ways statute and case law dealing with slavery recognized the humanness of the enslaved. Attempts to protect the property rights of slave owners led to increasingly restrictive laws--including laws concerning free blacks--that were difficult to uphold. The documents in this collection reveal both the roots of the dilemma and its inevitable outcome. ... Read more

Valenti's casebook helped me understand "Old Man and the Sea" by explaining the authors life and environment at the time of the books conception. With detailed research, maps and images I could better grasp what the author was writing about. To me this book made all the difference in the world in my understanding what I read and made Hemingway far less intemidating. This book doesn't try to cheat by telling you a "Cliff Notes" summary of the story, but is an actual accessory to better understanding the novel, written by an expert in the field. ... Read more
