Product Description

Saint Lambert's Nouveau traité de l'accompagnement de clavecin, de l'orgue, et des autres instruments of 1707 supplements his earlier harpsichord treatise, Les Principes du clavecin of 1702. The Nouveau traité is a method book specifically designed for the accompanist rather than the solo performer. It offers practical suggestions to help the accompanist play the correct harmony without having to read all the notated parts at the same time.

Saint Lambert discusses accompanying from unfigured and partly figured basses, and his was one of the first attempts to codify bass progressions into specific formulas, for which he assigns appropriate harmonies. He describes possible departures from the usual rules of accompaniment and examines performance techniques used by "tasteful" accompanists in order to create not merely a correct but an artistic accompaniment.

John Powell presents Saint Lambert's text in a readable English translation with musical examples in modern notation. He compares Saint Lambert's text in a readable English translation with musical examples in modern notation. He compares Saint Lambert's concepts of realization with those of contemporaneous sources and traces the influence of this treatise on later authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars A brief and comprehensive overview for the listener
A helpful listeners guide
Most books about harpsichord are for builders and players of the instruments. A reader gets lost within a view pages in technical details andvery detailed matters of ornamentation. I am always amazed why there is so little attention for listeners of harpsichord music. A brief history of the instrument, the main composers and schools, the performers and recordingsare hardly the core of any study.
This book by Bond is no exception in that line. It is intended for the player who is about to buy a harpsichord. Modern performers are hardly mentioned at all. Recordings are not quoted. And there is no taste for modern harpsichord. Still the book covers a lot of information for listeners to get a better understanding of the music because all the important issues are covered in a way that English has not to be your native tongue to understand it fully. Especially the chapters concerning how to play to get an aimed effect are revealing. Your ears are retunedin a pleasant way. The book is cheap, easy to read and without consuming details still covering all the major issues. In short recommended for the listener although we have to wait for the ultimate listeners guide yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready for Rameau!
Having inherited a rather valuable Baroque-era French harpsichord, I found myself unable to find an adequate tutor. While I am accomplished on the pianoforte, the harpsichord is a different beast entire.
Ann Bond's guide is easy to follow and will have the novice attaining fluency at a rapid pace.
I've been practicing daily and my parlor is alive with wonderful Baroque music.
I started with Bach and am moving towards Couperin and Rameau.
Splendid!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Comprehensive Introduction to the Harpsichord
Ann Bond has written an outstanding introduction to the many aspects of the Harpsichord. Her main audience is existing keyboard players coming to the Harpsichord though as a Classical Guitarist I found this book to be immensely useful.

While Ann Bond is clearly hugely knowledgeable about her subject she never allows too much information to get in the way of putting her key points across in an informative and well-reasoned manner. The book is very readable and her style and enthusiasm mean that reading this book is enjoyable throughout.

Chapters deal with the range of subjects which those coming fresh to the Harpsichord need to confront. These include issues of the instrument itself such as maintenance and how acquire, key differences with the piano especially regarding fingering, an overview of different styels of instruments and music as well as a very useful summary of the main Harpsichord repertoire including a listing of Bachs Harpsichord music. In addition there are sections on Figured Bass and how to play with other musicians.

In taking up this instrument I have found answers to all of the questions I have had and the advice has been thoroughly practical.

Indispensable to anyone interested in playing the Harpsichord.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a guide
I bought this book because I just inherited my first harpsichord and I thought this book would answer some questions I had after receiving it. The book spends the first few chapters going over the history, then one chapter on how it works with very few illustrations, and then the rest of the book is devoted entirely to playing the instrument. I had hoped to see more illustrations and a glossary of terms but was disappointed upon reading it. I would recommend this book to someone interested in a brief overview of the instrument and mostly learning to play, but not for someone who want to better understand the instruments inner workings.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference manual/history for harpsichordists
Ann Bond's A Guide To The Harpsichord is a practical, "reader friendly" guide to one of the truly classical instruments of European music which treats the mechanics and evolution of the instrument while offering an informative survey of thematically appropriate literature. Students of the Harpsichord will find a wealth of advice on touch and technique (including articulation and fingering), along with a lucid exposition of the issues involved in historical performance practice accompanied by a clear explanation of ornamentation. A Guide To The Harpsichord is an invaluable reference manual and history for students of the instrument, as well as a highly recommended addition to music history and classical music department reference library collections. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
Let's assume you have just spent X dollars on a harpsichord. Make it X + 25 and get this book. It's as important as the stand (did you remember to get a stand or legs? Those are handy too). Now let's consider another situation. You are thinking of getting one. Same thing. This book will give you a very sound historical perspective, set you on your feet and help you make a wise purchase. How about the hard-core crowd? I'll bet even you will find countless invaluable data, ranging from the average key-dip (~0.3125" in the treble, your instrument is probably set up with too cavernous a key-dip, nothing a little felt won't fix), to tips like remembering to check that the cloth strips on the end of the key levers aren't rubbing against neighbors, to tuning by ear and the way to make many minor repairs. There are sketches, photos, diagrams, and this is exactly what the title says, a practical manual for owners and pre-owners. Kottick has a lot of experience, having built many instruments, and he doesn't waste time on idle speculation; everything is practical, and oriented to making the instrument work for you. His advice on cleaning up a coffee spill on the soundboard is typical: don't stop to think, rip out the strings over the area with your bare hands and start blotting up and down with a paper towel. This is at the same time a work of encyclopedic breadth, the summary of a lifetime of infectious fascination.

If you are the type who is looking for the one book to get, this is it, and there is even hope you will find this one so enjoyable that you will buy a few more. Nurmi's Plain And Easy Introduction to The Harpsichord is, by the way, likely (still) the ideal follow-up volume, with emphasis of how to make the best use of the instrument, including simple exercises and annotated classical pieces to play, unabridged, as well as a lady's approach to maintenance.

The harpsichord differs from the piano in that it is a simple mechanism, its wooden body and resonance suggests a guitar, it's "organic" in a nice way. Last week I spent several days away from my harpsichords, and I never expected to be so lonely and dissatisfied with even the finest pianos. The harpsichord owner is expected to perform day to day maintenance -- it's nothing complicated, and this is how you show your beloved instrument(s) you care. There is no more fundamental and more useful book on the market than Kottick's to make this intimate relationship all that it should be.

While pianos are very standardized, no two harpsichords are the same. It is worth mentioning that Kottick is biased towards fine thin-cased instruments built according to historical designs. This is the 5K and up market. But even the old Zuckermann kits vary enormously, from imploding plywood wrecks to vastly underrated instruments that can be purchased very inexpensively. This is the under 2K market. To navigate these waters requires some expertise. The initial appearance of the case is not the important factor, unless the objective is to quickly deposit a pretty piece of furniture in the living room. The buyer who thoroughly studies Kottick's book beforehand will know what matters, and can be rewarded with either a superb instrument that can later be traded up without loss, or a (very) decent harpsichord at a bargain price in exchange for a little elbow grease, some extra parts, and attention. Only a person with no interest in the harpsichord should pass this volume by.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide for the harpsichord owner
When a friend gave me her 30-year-old, non-working, kit-made harpsichord, I hired a technician to get it working and bought this book. The technician then turned "the project" over to me, assuring me as confidently as the author does, that when the instrument's works went awry, I could handle the repairs.I'm a totally unhandy person except when at the keyboard or in the kitchen.Nevertheless, thanks to Kottick's clear, complete, step-by-step help, I have replaced strings, shaped and replaced plectra, and regulated jacks. The instrument is now in better shape than when the technician left, and the book has prepared me for its further improvement. My husband, who is handy, was a bit put off by Kottick's detail, feeling he wrote to a reader who knew nothing about how things work.Point taken, but that reader is me, and I appreciate having this author by my side as I approach the day when I'll spend more time playing my harpsichord than working on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harpsichord repair
I purchased a harpsichord in pretty poor shape. This book has walked me through the essential steps in restoring the instrument very well.I've repaired the jacks and more. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had This Book Long Ago
Many years ago a brother and I built a harpsichord from a kit.If we would have had this book, it sure would have made it easier. It is clear and concise, packed with information any harpsichord owner or someone contemplating a harpsichord purchase should have.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate book for harpsichord owners
I've bought a few books over the past few weeks on the subject but each of the other books only touched briefly on how a harpsichord works. This book has it all. There were ample illustrations and an excellent description of each part and what it does. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the working of a harpsichord or considering building/purchasing one. ... Read more

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments in Hong Kong face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments to Hong Kong? How important is Hong Kong compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments vary from one country of origin to another in Hong Kong? On the supply side, Hong Kong also exports pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments. Which countries receive the most exports from Hong Kong? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments in Hong Kong. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments for those countries serving Hong Kong via exports, or supplying from Hong Kong via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Hong Kong fits into the world market for imported and exported pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Hong Kong in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Hong Kong is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Hong Kong compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Russia fits into the world market for imported and exported pianos, automatic pianos, harpsichords, and other keyboard stringed instruments. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Russia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Russia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Russia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

Product Description
