Consumer lawyers sought to prove that the weight loss drugs produced by the drug manufacturers were causing heart valve disease and a rare condition known as primary pulmonary hypertension (also known as PPH). The evidence about known risk of fatalities unearthed in the historic legal battle would shock six million consumers - the fen-phen combination of diet pills can cause serious heart valve disorders and primary pulmonary hypertension. In the case of the progressive disease of primary pulmonary hypertension, no known cure exists. As we enter 2003 - nearly six years after the diet drugs were pulled from the market - many Fen-Phen users are tragically learning they have or may later develop pulmonary hypertension or PPH. Symptoms of pulmonary hypertension include shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, discolored hands or lips, and swelling in feet and hands. The most common symptom of primary pulmonary hypertension is an increase in the pulmonic second heart sound, which is typically observed in a physical examination. In addition, the enlargement of the main pulmonary artery is common and is observed with a chest x-ray. One of the best methods for determining or diagnosing pulmonary hypertion is the echocardiogram. Unfortunately, primary pulmonary hypertension is often misdiagnosed or overlooked. The disease is rare and not commonly observed by many medical practitioners.

"Our research showed that no single food or nutrient is capable of decreasing blood pressure, but a diet rich in several vegetables, dairy foods, fruits and whole grains; and low in sugars and fat decreased blood pressure substantially in several individuals with hypertension." The first part of the book provides readers with information on how the diet works as well as advice on how to incorporate the diet plan into everyday life. The second half of the book provides 62 recipes created by a team of experienced nutritionists, practical informational resources and a form to help individuals track their new eating habits. Together with Moore, a team of researchers studied the affects of the diet on a group of 459 individuals with high and high-normal blood pressure. Results showed that the DASH diet reduced blood pressure in hypertensive individuals by an average of 11 points in systolic pressure and 5.5 points in diastolic pressure. "The DASH diet is a healthy diet for all individuals, but never change your medications without the advice and agreement of your physician," said Moore.

Dr. Sacks's laborartory is conducting studies of lipoprotein subfractions in the Cholesterol and Recurrent Events trial to predict cardiovascular events, and differential response to treatment. A new study published in Archives of Internal Medicine provides further proof that that exercise, especially in combination with weight loss, can help keep high blood pressure under control. This study divided 133 sedentary, overweight men and women with mild hypertension into two groups. One group cycled, walked or jogged for 30 minutes, three to four times per week while following their usual diet. The second group followed the same exercise routine and also participated in an organized weight loss program. At the end of the six-month study, researchers found exercise alone significantly lowered blood pressure. Those that combined exercise and weight loss, though, showed an even greater reduction in blood pressure and lost an average of 7.8 kg (17 lbs) of excess weight. Among the latter group, 67% of those classified as mildly hypertensive at the start of the study had normal blood pressures after six months.
