Extractions: Handouts Herbarium Project Gathering Leaves Put list of key skill leaves on board or transparency Have 2 lists: required and extra credit Students need a clipboard or slick surfaced notebook Tear off strips of masking tape and place on notebook Label strips of tape Take extra tape and pens outside Give each student a sack Take Playground map for tree identification Take class to each tree to gather specimens Remind students that leaves need to be press size (especially sycamore Putting in Presses Students work in 4 or 5 groups (number of presses) Use a marker to write names of leaves and student names on newspaper. Make sure leaves do not overlap or hang out. Students write names on outside of newspapers with markers or bright pens. Place newspapers between blotter paper with cardboard on outside. Place in presses and leave about a week. Gluing Leaves on Paper Have 1 size of poster board (construction paper not recommended) Saves time if students have labels ready before day we glue Label should go in lower left corner Glue stick works great for labels, or use glue/water mixture

Extractions: th Grade Herbarium Project During the summer of 1997 I took a class at the Department of Conservation at Missouri Western State College. Rodney Green from the Department of Conservation and John Rushin from the Department of Biology taught the class. We were shown a collection of leaves that were very old. I was very impressed with the process and asked if I could borrow the five presses the Department of Conservation owned. Rodney Green loaned them to me for two years. After that John Parmenter of Albany made 12 presses for the fifth grade. Both fifth grade classes participate in making herbariums. Each class is divided into five groups. Each group works together putting their leaves in the same press. Extractions: The principal herbarium is that of A. de Wever (1874-1947) of Nuth. In 1912, de Wever was one of the founding members of the Natuurhistorisch Genootschap in Limburg. Between 1890 and 1943 he collected plants from the whole of southern Limburg, a collection which, by its being well-documented, ranks amongst the most important regional herbariums in The Netherlands. On the basis of this herbarium detailed studies into the flora and vegetation at the start of this century could be carried out. The de Wever Herbarium consists of c. 20,000 paper covers with a total of some 60,000 specimens. Of the smaller herbariums those of J.L. Rieter and L. Grégoire are of importance. Part of the collection are also a few pharmacist herbariums, the principal one of which is the mosses herbarium of 1770 of the Maastricht chemist J.L. Extractions: The Botanical Museum (and Library ) holds collections of c. 2,325,000 specimens separated into 9 different herbaria: The General Herbarium of Vascular Plants (1,155,000 specimens) consists of collections from all over the world and from almost all families. It is estimated that 11,300 of the worlds known 14,000 genera are represented. It holds an estimated 25,000 type-specimens under registration. The herbarium is especially rich in material from the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greece, Spain, Macaronesia, Africa, SE-Asia, Mexico, W.-Indies, Central America and South America. The Herbarium of Danish Vascular Plants (230,000 specimens) consists of collections from all parts of Denmark from the 18th century up to now. It includes at least 1500 species and is the largest collection of Danish plants. Many of the specimens depicted in Flora Danica are kept in this collection. Additionally, the herbarium comprises the file of the Topographical-Botanical Investigation of Denmark as well as the unpublished sources of the Botanical Locality Register.

Extractions: The herbarium is a place for consultation and is a scientific source. Its purpose is to have the entire representation of vascular plants found in Baja California Sur state, Baja California peninsula, and the Mexican Northwest. The I ndex Herbariorum registers it as HCIB. Taxonomically this herbarium is divided into 3 groups: a) Angiosperms, b) Gymnosperms, c) Ferns and allies. The compilation is organized in alphabetical order according to families, genera, and species. The sample voucher is characterized by either a vascular vegetal individual or a representative fragment, properly dehydrated, set on a 110 kg bristol cardboard (11x 16 inches) having an information label. The family of each specimen is located alphabetically by shelf. Each folder contains only one genus, and within this, all identified samples are in alphabetical order. There are at most 10 samples in each folder. In case one genus requires more than one folder, the folders are numbered and have the corresponding information on the lower right corner.
