LOCAL HISTORY (by Scott O'Bryan) The basic sources for the history of any region or locality in Japan are the prefectural and municipal histories compiled by the local governments: and kushi . Most are written by members of the local educational board [ ]. They vary widely in quality, although rather little in style. Still, these official histories are the place to begin any local historical study, as they provide information that would be time-consuming, if not impossible to glean from other sources (including statistics showing growth and change in population, industry etc., as well as descriptions of culture, biographies of famous local figures, and so forth). Because so many are published, since 1983 Columbia has followed a policy of collecting official and industry histories for only a section of the country, in agreement with Harvard, Yale and Princeton, which cover the rest. Version 3.2-3 is linked with HDS 4.1, which provides some safeguard against corrupting an input file. Some applications cannot operate in situ on input data, but force a new output file. In earlier versions if the same name was given for output as for input, then the input (and output) file would have been corrupted. Version 3.2-3 is linked with PAR 2.0, which supports the use of strings "min" and "max" when prompted for a number. The workaround in previous versions to use ridiculously small and big numbers does no longer work. There are new applications HCROSS to calculate redshifts and APERTURE for simple photometry.

Scope and Audience This Plan is for a bibliography on the topic of disaster prevention and preparedness measures, immediate response procedures and recovery strategies for libraries and archives. These several aspects are usually dealt with all together under the single moniker Disaster Preparedness. The related fields of Preservation and Safety, front-end concerns, and Conservation and Restoration, back-end issues, are entwined with Disaster Preparedness and are also touched on in the Plan. My limited searching shows a fair amount of bibliographic material extant on the topic of Conservation and Restoration of library and archival materials but a relatively small amount of literature on the topic of Disaster Preparedness. I intended the bibliography to focus on planning and implementation aspects of Disaster Preparedness that are appropriate for
NLN - Spring 2000 - Kwapil Award Winner I've been living in hawaii for about 10 years. . Sandy is a fulltime writerof biography, travel, and adventure, and has a book proposal circulating. http://www.ibiblio.org/slanews/nln/nln00/spring/kwapil.htm
Extractions: Congratulations to the Winner of the Kwapil Award Sandra Kimberley Hall is a native of Sydney, Australia. Sandy describes herself as a sandwich child; the middle child of five, with twins above and twins below her. Sandy left Oz (her fond nickname for Australia) as a newlywed, and lived in Tucson, Arizona for 23 years. She graduated from University of Arizona with two masters degrees in school librarianship and librarianship, which helped launch many surprising and different careers. These included a decade as librarian at the Arizona Daily Star ; political consulting; law firm management, and public relations executive. Whenever people ask Sandy which is her favorite career, she always says, "the next one." Her career changes were based on her husband's relocations and alien laws in force in the 1970s. After a long marriage, Sandy says she "recently escaped and am living as a single person for the first time in my life. I've been living in Hawaii for about 10 years."
