Extractions: Cars Not Candy, Should be Parents Primary Safety Concern on Halloween Washington, D.C. Although many parents and caregivers worry about hidden dangers in their childs candy on Halloween, they should be more concerned about their childs safety as a pedestrian that evening. Each year, more than 650 children are hit by cars and killed and another 20,000 are injured and on Halloween, that number rises dramatically. In fact, children are four times more likely to suffer a pedestrian-related fatality on Halloween than any other night of the year. Thats why the National SAFE KIDS Campaign is urging parents to take precautions to keep their kids safe this Halloween. Check out the Campaign's Halloween Safety Checklist in both English (PDF) and Spanish (PDF).

Extractions: Originally Released: October, 1999 Halloween is coming. While kids are thinking about their costumes and the piles of candy, parents need to think about the possible dangers their children could face during the frantic trick-or-treat festivities. "Halloween can be scary in more ways than the traditional sense. For kids, Halloween is one of the most dangerous nights of the year because of the many injuries that occur," says Karen Hardingham, R.N., program coordinator for Baltimore SAFE KIDS Coalition and nurse at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. "Most parents worry about candy tampering. They're not always aware that pedestrian injuries, burns, and falls account for the majority of the injuries on Halloween," adds Hardingham. According to Hardingham, many of the risks children face can be avoided if parents follow a few simple safety tips and take time to talk to their children about safety before trick-or-treating. To help make Halloween safe for every child, the Baltimore SAFE KIDS Coalition at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children recommend that parents take the following precautions:

"Halloween is a scary night for kids and parents - in more than the traditional sense. It can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year due to a variety of factors," says Karen Farley, Quad Cities Safe Kids Coalition. "Most parents worry about candy tampering. They're not aware that pedestrian injuries, burns and falls account for a majority of the injuries primarily because kids are walking in the dark with unwieldy costumes in the streets and around jack-o-lanterns and candles." Many of the risks kids face can be avoided if parents discuss with their kids the important safety precautions that the Quad Cities Safe Kids and Quad Cities Safe Communities Coalitions recommends following.

In fact, children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year. Halloween can indeed be scary, with increases in pedestrian injuries, burns and falls among children. "Children may be distracted by the excitement of the night and the fun of trick-or-treating, and may not take safety to the street. Careless street crossing coupled with drivers' more limited vision at night can make for a deadly mix." said Keene Hart of the Quad Cities' SAFE KIDS Coalition. Extractions: T he October 31st holiday that we today know as Halloween has strong roots in paganism and is closely connected with worship of the Enemy of this world, Satan. It is a holiday that generally glorifies the dark things of this world, rather than the light of Jesus Christ , The Truth. Have you noticed how costumes and masks are getting generally more bloody, gory, and depraved each year? Unfortunately, the gruesome and grotesque and the occult are increasingly glorified in American society, not only on Halloween, but throughout the year in horror movies and in television programs. My family does not celebrate it or participate in it. We do not believe that our children are "missing out," and neither do they. Other days are used for costumes and parties. Happily, all of our children have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior . We have found that Halloween provides an excellent time to remind our children that, as Christians, we are different, and not of this world ( Heb. 11:13-16

Extractions: When I was a lad in the 1940s in South East Washington, D.C. we celebrated Halloween for two nights. On October 30th, Beggar's Night, everyone went "Trick or Treating." Even then, we went to selected houses for treats. Tricks were mild at best - not like the good old days when the emphasis was on tricks - like dumping over out houses. On Halloween Night everyone went down to Pennsylvania Avenue for a costume walk. This was our Fall Easter Parade. That's a thing of the past, too. While I was getting older, GREED entered the Halloween festivity scene. Halloween became a major commercial event with merchants pushing "Halloween" products such as decorations, candy and costumes. There was a lot of confusion on which night was Trick or Treat Night. Kids went out two nights. Kids are not stupid. Two nights means twice the amount of candy. Then, somebody in authority decided Trick or Treating was to be only on one night - Halloween. Now, only one night is celebrated with the expected costumes and begging. After Greed came true evil. Nuts came out of their shells. Candy and treats were spiked with chemicals and sharp things. Authority warned Trick and Treaters to accept only sealed wrapped treats. Treat givers were told to only give sealed wrapped treats. Candy corn, and stuff, wrapped lovingly in napkins and tied with a bow became a thing of the past. Danger stalked the streets. Beggars beware!

Extractions: Friday, November 02, 2001 Printer friendly version I love Halloween, because it reminds me of a simpler, more-innocent time - a time when I dressed up as a goblin and ran around the neighborhood shouting, "Trick or treat!" But that was last year. This year, I think I'll have a more subdued costume. Maybe I'll dress up as a large piece of lumber and carry around a cardboard box labeled "Interest Rates," and every few steps, I'll drop it. Get it? It's the Federal Reserve "Board!" Dropping interest rates! Ha ha! I bet THAT will get a big reaction from the neighborhood kids! Probably in the form of eggs. That's the problem with kids today: They don't know what Halloween is all about. It has been commercialized to the point where our young people think it's just "fun and games." They know nothing about the somber origin of this holiday, which dates back to 1621, when the Pilgrims, having survived a difficult first winter in America, decided to express their thanks by dressing up in comical outfits with knickers and hats shaped like traffic cones (ordinarily, the Pilgrims wore bowling attire) and then went around playing pranks with what turned out tragically to be their last remaining roll of toilet paper, and thus, as you can imagine, their second winter was no picnic either. THAT is what Halloween is about, but try explaining it to these spoiled kids today, with their inexhaustible supplies of Charmin.
