Product Description
The #1 New York Times bestseller-updated with additional information on the current Iraq War-now in trade paperback.

General Chuck Horner commanded the U.S. and allied air assets-the forces of a dozen nations- during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and was responsible for the design and execution of one of the most devastating air campaigns in history. Never before has the Gulf air war planning, a process filled with controversy and stormy personalities, been revealed in such rich, provocative detail. In this edition of Every Man a Tiger, General Horner looks at the current Gulf conflict and comments on the use of air power in Iraq.Amazon.com Review
This Tom Clancy real-life military thriller is more nuancedthan his novels, because its object is not simply to dramatize armedconflict but to relate the life lessons of his source,jet-pilot-turned-Desert-Storm-air-commander General ChuckHorner. Horner is no war cheerleader like General "Buck" Turgidson inDr. Strangelove. He loathes the arrogance of the backwards,nuke-happy Strategic Air Command and the madly out-of-touch VietnamWar planner Robert McNamara. McNamara confesses his folly in twobooks, Argument WithoutEnd and InRetrospect, but Horner's you-are-there account more vividlydemonstrates Vietnam's grim lessons. He flew an F-105 Thunderbird"Thud" fighter in the Wild Weasels, the unit with the highestmedals-per-aircrew ratio, knew pilots who were stoned to death byvillagers, and realized all the bombing did zero good. "All we reallyhad to do was befriend Ho," says Horner sensibly. "Seems he wasn'tpart of a monolithic Communist plot, and hated the Chinese more thananything else." Horner is savvy about the screwups, the achievements, and the political maneuvering in and after the Gulf War, as leadersand branches of service battled for PR victories. His idea of a herois Boomer McBroom's pilot Captain Gentner Drummond, who won a FlyingCross medal for refusing AWACS orders to down a jet that turned out tobe a Saudi ally. Horner thinks the interservice and internationalcooperation in the Gulf War was way better than in Vietnam, butthere's ample room for improvement. The action scenes aren't quite asbrilliant as those in Black Hawk Down: A Story ofModern War, but Clancy fans will find plenty toadmire. Horner's improbable survival of a 150-m.p.h. near-crash inLibya in 1962 belongs in a Tom Clancy film. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lessons on cross-culturalism and "downward loyalty" when lives are on the line

There are already so many well-written reviews here that I'll make mine brief. I'll also keep my views on the Gulf Wars to myself.

I read this book, and Clancy's earlier Into The Storm: A Study in Command (Commander Series), because I was interested in knowing how the US military recovered from its lackluster performance in Vietnam. How such a remarkable turnaround can be accomplished is valuable knowledge, no matter what the goals of those who carried it out.

General Horner learned his lessons from Vietnam. He believes that he, his fellow pilots, and the even the enemy were no more than pawns in a geopolitical game played by the leaders of both sides. Therefore, even though technological improvement was a big part of the turnaround between Vietnam and Desert Storm, so was the attention paid to the common airman's working conditions and life in general. That sort of "downward loyalty", sustained for a decade prior to the Gulf War, paid dividends when the Air Force had to keep planes repaired, armed, fueled, and navigated through hostile territory.

Cross-culturalism --in the form of close cooperation with Arab allies before and during the War-- was also indispensable to the Allies' success. I'll definitely recommend this book to fellow Christians who openly hate Muslims, and seem believe that victory came because the US had God's favor.

IN SUMMARY
It's easy to mouth platitudes about cross-culturalism and loyalty toward subordinates in the comfort of our own living rooms, but the US military (whatever its other faults) put those values into practice through many difficult years. Its efforts paid off when thousands of lives were on the line. I'm glad that this book tells us, in some degree, how that was accomplished.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arabism uber alles
This book documents how the United States and NATO have become the Dhimmi States of Arabia under the command of the Saudis. Oy Va Voy! Big Andy from Detroit

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Fan of Clancy but Much Prefer Audio Versions of Clancy
Clancy created a good study in Every Man A Tiger.Like all Clancy books, it's filled with military jargon and technicalities, which I personally enjoy.Yet I also discovered after the first two Clancy books I read that his writing is often highly technical and plot-driven while his development of characters is wordy and not very sophisticated. Therefore, Clancy works much better for me in audio format and he's one of the very few authors that I prefer in abridged from.

In Every Man A Tiger I learned how complicated air command is, how dominant air power can be when supported by ground troops and how impossibly expensive air power can be.This is a great account and view of Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

Finally, air power is getting more expensive all the time and one must wonder when money has such diminishing returns that an optimal budget could ever be established.Quite obviously, the U.S. must continue building a better Air Force but has bumped into budget contraints that nobody wants to discuss. This is the matter that was never addressed and that I believe is more important than the discussions of how technology changed strategy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Horner 1, Clancy 0
I recomend this book because of Gen. Horner and in spite of Mr. Clancy. (I think "The Hunt For Red October" is great but its been down-hill from there...) I'm sure Mr. Clancy brought organizing talent and expertise in formatting chapters, paragraphs and pages to this book, but I felt I could tell when Horner, or Clancy, was the primary writer, and I'd have been happier with the General's own voice the whole time.

General Horner comes across as a full character, with a story to tell. I'd rate his part 5 stars.

The "there I was" parts about planning and carrying-out the air-war in Desert Shield and Desert Storm are illuminating, and the description of the troubled USAF trying to find purpose, meaning and funding, after Viet Nam, are interesting. But the heart of the book for me are Horner's two tours in Viet Nam. Actually, in Thailand, but over Viet Nam when flying. By the end of his first tour, Horner realizes that the USA, his country, and the USAF, his service, doesn't actually want to win in Viet Nam, and isn't willing to do what it takes to win. Its not the left wing media, or the protesters, its the chain of command, from Johnson down, and he makes this point directly.

And then he goes back for a second tour, flying Wild Weasel missions at great personal risk. Why? He says its because this was "the war he had". He doesn't dwell on it, but it seems that having signed up, and being willing to serve, so far, he's willing to risk his life to do what he's been trained to do, in the persuit of foolish, pointless, even counter-productive things. I'd say immoral things, once you know you can't win, many might disagree.

But there, in a real officer's words, more or less, is why our nation must take (more) care in choosing its leaders, and give great thought to its citizens in uniform, volunteer or otherwise. People, all people, our people, are amazing, and they will try to do every job they are given to the best of their ability.

Give them a stupid job that hasn't been well thought out and they will die trying to make it happen. If its a military job and it involves killing, they'll kill. Not from blood lust or to be evil, but because that's what they've been asked to do.

Its no use blaming the soldiers- after a very brief time at war, soldiers have more in common with each other, with the soldiers of the other side, than they do with the folks at home. Its the leadership, which, in a democracy, is US, which is responsible. We cannot casually send out the Marines, or the 82nd Airborne, or the carrier battle group, and assume all is well. We have to be damn sure we know what we want before we ask our service people to risk their lives for it. They may do what we ask, and it may not work, it may not be the right thing, it may not be what we actually want.

This book is rather technical (about the level of "The Naval Institute Procedings", NY Times or Aviation Week, more so than "Air Force Review" or one of Clancy's books. Having a background in the subject helps, having an interest in the subject is a must.

Its hard to keep reading when Horner steps out and Clancy lets his fingers sing on the keyboard. But its worth it, at least through the first third, and after that, its like "Day of the Jackel"- you know how it ends, but you want to know this version anyway. Skim if you have to.

This is a far *better* book than Richard Hallinon's "Storm over Iraq" (Hallinon, the "Offical USAF Historian", is too rah-rah, with too little critical thinking or self awareness) and provides an interesting 50,000 foot view to contrast with, for example, "Warthogs", the first-person, 15,000 feet and under, stories of A-10 pilots & squadrons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Man A Tiger
Great book.General Chuck Horner is a real character and I enjoyed his insights immensely.Tom Clancy does a great job explaining military technology although some of his graphs' Xs & Ys axises needed to be labeled.Overall a great book.I enjoyed it more that "Enter the Storm" which was based on Fred Franks. ... Product Description
For the United States, the 1991 Persian Gulf War was a brief and successful military operation with few injuries and deaths. However, soon after returning from duty, a large number of veterans began reporting health problems they believed were associated with their service in the Gulf. At the request of Congress, the IOM is conducting an ongoing review of the evidence to determine veterans' long-term health problems and what might be causing those problems. The fourth volume in the series, released in 2006, summarizes the long-term health problems seen in Gulf War veterans. In 2008, the IOM began an update to look at existing health problems and identify possible new ones, considering evidence collected since the initial summary.

In this report, the IOM determines that Gulf War service causes post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that service is associated with multisymptom illness; gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome; alcohol and other substance abuse; and anxiety disorders and other psychiatric disorders. To ensure that our veterans receive the best possible care, now and in the future, the government should continue to monitor their health and conduct research to identify the best treatments to assist Gulf War veterans still suffering from persistent, unexplained illnesses. ... Product Description
The Great War now known as World War I was one of the crucial events in the history of the 20th century. The war was unprecedented in scale and intensity, with more men fighting and more casualties in action than any war before. Over 60 million soldiers took part. The war claimed over 40 million casualties, including approximately 20 million civilian and military dead. Many of the events attendant upon the war - blockade, revolution, genocide and disease - increased the misery. For this reason, the war is vividly remembered even today as a historic human tragedy.

Albert Frederick Pollard was a British historian who specialized in political history. Pollard studied and wrote about the history from a political viewpoint. Later in his career, he was a major force in establishing history as an academic subject in Britain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine historical work
Dr. Owsley tells the story of the Gulf area during the War of 1812 in a very readable manner. His work is quite thorough and includes a lot of detail about the skirmishes and battles.I recommend this to anyone with an interest in the War of 1812 and the Creek Indian War.The research done was well documented and any student of history will find this a great source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Order of Indian Wars of the United States Book Review
For decades to come this will be the standard reference work on this topic.Superbly researched utilizing not only the usual American sources, but the previously untapped archives of Spain and Great Britain.Owsley has integrated the Creek War into the larger framework of the War of 1812 causing the reader at some point to pronounce "Eureka" as you begin to acquire a whole new perspective on Andrew Jackson and the conflict with Great Britain.

This may easily be the best history on the Creek War of 1813-1814.What could have been a completely altered history of the United States - if Andrew Jackson had not been in command, if he would have hesitated only weeks from the crucible campaign concluding at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, if the British would have landed the state-of-the-art muskets, artillery, military advisors/trainers, and cavalry accoutrements several weeks earlier than they did, if the Spanish had been more pro-active than they were for the Creeks, etc. - would have prevented us from our Manifest Destiny! I never before have read all of this with such fervor, explanation, and detail.Owsley makes the point that too many of our historians have belittled our accomplishments in these two interrelated wars and downplayed their significance.Often we have been led to believe that the War of 1812 was a "draw."He makes the point that it was on balance a resounding victory.

Jackson's being in the right place at the right time for the Battle of New Orleans would not have occurred but for his role in the Creek War and the overwhelming victory achieved. We would not have had the experienced and trained troops in place under his command but for the Creek War.And, inasmuch as the British did not recognize the validity of the Louisiana Purchase, if they had won the Battle of New Orleans then the Treaty of Ghent signed in December 1814 would not have applied to any claims that they would have asserted over New Orleans, Louisiana, and their planned buffer states under the Creek Indians and their allies. The frontier would have been inflamed and we would have had strong buffer Indian states with which to contend and two mutually supportive European powers. All of this was prevented by Andrew Jackson and his juggernaut victory at Horseshoe Bend. The sheer quantum of international intrigue taking place at Pensacola and throughout the Gulf area is enlightening.

This book is highly recommended by this reviewer. You will receive a whole new perspective onAndrew Jackson and his brave Tennessee and Georgia troops in the Creek War.

5-0 out of 5 stars The War of 1812 in the South
Struggle for the Gulf Borderlands is the best single book on the often-overlooked Gulf Coast Theater of the War of 1812.Well written and researched, Struggle for the Gulf Borderlands brings to light several little understood aspects of the War of 1812.First, it illustrates the previously overlooked interrelation of the Creek War and the bearing it had on the outcome of the War of 1812.

Secondly, it details all military and political actions on the Gulf Coast leading up to the Battle of New Orleans. Most books focus only on the events of the battle, ignoring the many actions that had a direct influence on how the Battle of New Orleans was fought.Struggle for the Gulf Borderlands describes these events so one can understand thier impact on the outcome of the battle itself.

Lastly, Struggle for the Gulf Borderlands brings to light the divergent Southern opinion that the War of 1812 was a great military victory. From the Southern perspective, victory was nearly complete; the Creeks had been destroyed (opening more land for settlement); the Mobile territory had been annexed; and a major British invasion had been decisively stopped. The book contrasts this Southern perspective to the typical Northern view that the War of 1812 was at best a draw, which is the general view put forward by the majority of books on this subject.

Overall, the book is readable and informative. It is important for the new ideas and information it brings to the history of an area and a period.I highly recommend it to anyone interested in either the Creek War or the War of 1812. ... Read more

Product Description
Mohamed Heikal is one of the Arab world's most distinguished journalists and commentators. This book describes the Gulf War and the events which led up to it from an Arab perspective - a perspective very different from the often simplistic and stereotypical reporting of the Western media. Heikal argues that Western observers have completely failed to recognize that Arabs see themselves as members of a single nation, and that many of the borders between present-day Arab states are regarded as arbitrary, artificial and much-resented impositions. In the course of this book the author raises, and attempts to answer, fundamental questions such as how Saddam Hussein came to be regarded as a hero by some many in the Arab and Third Worlds, what are Arab perceptions of Kuwait and what were President Bush's motives for pursuing a war with Iraq? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stories
I have known Barry well for thirty years now and have loved this book for the last fifteen. His book was highly inspirational to me in the writing of I Never Liked Those C-130's Anyway.
It is as germain today as it was in 1992 after the first Gulf War,which is when I first read it.
It is chocked full of humor and Barry McWilliams' special take on the every day. As the creator of the JP Doodles cartoon he has used his skills to full advantage by creating the wonderfull art within.
A worthy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Desert Storm Veteran
If you REALLY want to find out how things were in the "First Gulf War", buy a copy of this book! It was sent to me by my best friend while I was over there digging in the big sand box, and while it does help provide some comic relief and allowed me to laugh at the situation I was in at the time, it sure tells it like it was at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars This aint Hell, but you can see it from here!
This was an awesome book and I have read it numerous times. Being a Gulf War Veteran I read just about every book that came out right after the Gulf War to see what the various authors had to say about a war that affectedmillions of us and that 500,000 plus American attended/participated in. Ino longer read books on the Gulf war because most of it is politicaldribble trying to explain what did not happen, Now it seems that it is moreconvient for some to write lies then the truth, no such thing as Gulf WarSyndrome right. Enough of politics that is why I like this book, because itput everything in perspective using humor.

If you are not a veterans itwill still be funny to most of you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it! Brought back more than a couple memories.
This will always be one of my favorite books on the Gulf War. I especially liked the chapter on the Red Rope Ranger. I laugh out loud every time I think about it!

Product Description
The red-capped military policeman standing on traffic duty on vital crossroads has become a familiar and respected figure to the 20th-century British soldier. Although generals as diverse as Wellington and Haig can be numbered among its admirers, the role of the Royal Military Police and its antecedents is much less well-known outside the army. In this authorized history, specially commissioned by the Royal Military Police, G.D. Sheffield brings to life the often bloody history of the Redcaps and their ancestors. Provost Marshals and military policemen have served with English and British armies since the late-Middle Ages, and this book traces their story through the 17th century, the wars of Marlborough and Wellington, to the establishment of the direct forerunner of the modern RMP in the aftermath of the Crimean War. While in earlier years Provost were used to enforce discipline, in the 20th century the RMP have also acquired a vital role in traffic control on the battlefield. A major feature of this book is the section on World War I, an era which was crucial to the development of the Corps, but has been hitherto largely neglected.Provost's vital role at Dunkirk, Alamein, Normandy, Burma and on many other fronts in World War II is examined in detail. The book concludes with an analysis of the role of the RMP in post-1945 conflicts, including the Falklands War and Operation Desert Storm. This book draws upon extensive archival research and is fully documented. It also reveals much about the development of discipline in the British Army, dealing with controversial subjects such as the use of summary punishments and the bloody reputation of the Provost. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Just the Pictures, Please...
1991's "In The Eye of Desert Storm" is a collection of outstanding photographs taken by members of the Sygma Photo News Agency during the conduct of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM in 1990-1991.The Sygma photographers declined to join the DoD pool of journalists and struck out on their own, taking some significant individual risks but in general coming back with some greatresults.

"In The Eye of Desert Storm" is a coffee-table picture book telling the story of the First Gulf War in pictures, with minimal text. The build-up of Allied forces in Saudi Arabia, the counteroffensive into Kuwait and its liberation, the aftermath of combat, and the return of soldiers to their homes is documented in just under 200 excellent, often evocative photos.

The introductory essay by C.D.B Bryan is another story.A chest-thumping account of moral posturing on behalf of a supposedly enlightened press corps, it decries restrictions on the movement of journalists in the theater and the supposedly overly sanitized version of the war that was presented to the world.Any impact this essay might have is undermined by Bryan's reluctance to grant any moral distinctions between the members of the coalition and their Iraqi opponents, without whose brutal occupation of Kuwait there would have been no war.

My advice to the would-be reader is to skip the intro and get on to the photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
The photography in this book is extremely impressive. Man of the pictures are unique, one-of-a-kind shots of aspects of the war that are often forgotten now. This is a fascinating and somewhat morbid humorous look at man's ability to kill himself in war......even if this means killing himself and his allies. The book reads well as a result of the author's interesting and humorous manner of writing. Sure it is not a humorous subject but sometimes one cannot help but laugh at the abject stupidity of mankind throughout history. This book proves that no matter how much technology advances there is always a weak link...mankind. 4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading forthe Falklands and Gulf wars
This is one of the most readable personal accounts of the Falkland and Gulf wars that I have encountered.Chris Craig commanded the frigate HMS Alacrity during the Falkalnds war.Alacrity was in the thick of action -searching for blockage runners (sinking one), was near-missed by anArgentine submarine, and carried out many fire support missions.Navaloperations during the Gulf war have been overshadowed by the land campaign, even though it is unlikely that Desert Storm would have beenpossible without command of the sea. This book partly redresses thatinbalance. Craig commanded the royal navy squadron during the conflict andthis book provides much insight into naval operations. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a rousing collection of eyewitness accounts detailing 150 of the most crucial battles in the past 2,500 years of world history. From the Spartan defeat of the Athenians at Delion, recounted in 424 b.c. by Thucydides, to a fighter pilot’s firsthand account of an air attack by a squadron of Tornados on Iraq in Operation Desert Storm, with dramatic immediacy this stirring Mammoth volume chronicles 25 centuries of military history in the words of the hoplites, knights, musketeers, foot soldiers, cavalrymen, and bombardiers who fought them. Drawn from the reports both of commanding officers and of rank-and-file soldiers in the presentation of critical battles in such military conflicts as the Crusades, the Hundred Years War, the American War for Independence and Civil War, and World Wars I and II, the book’s selections provide both an overview of what happened and a vivid picture of what it was like in the trenches or on the field when it happened. Where it happened ranges from Antioch to Agincourt to Austerlitz to Antietam, from Bunker Hill to San Juan Hill, from the Crimea to the Somme, from Crecy to Coruna to Khe Sanh in Vietnam. Throughout, editor Richard Lawrence places the eyewitness accounts in a narrative context and includes more than 50 maps that situate the battles and the fields where this volume’s officers and infantrymen momentously made history. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
A thoroughly misleading book and title.
This should have been titled "the american civil war" which is covered in exhausting pages!
There is virtually no coverage of the major battles that shaped civilization. For example, Alexander of Macedonia, who was the most accomplished of all generals in all time history (by far!), is not covered or even mentioned. How can anyone write a book on battles without Alexander or covering the battle of Gaugamela? Or his battle of Issus where he was again outnumbered and yet beat Darius's Persian army decisively! WWII is likewise disappointing in its coverage. There is no mention of the great tank battles fought by commanders like Guderian and Rommel. Nor is there Patton or McArthur coverage.
However, the "battle" of Falkland is covered!! What a waste of paper. ... Read more

The New Republic airbrushed a Hitler mustache on Saddam Hussein. CNN reporters described the bombing of Baghdad as "fireworks on the Fourth of July." The Pentagon fed prepackaged programs to the TV networks. Veiled Arab women became icons of an exotic culture. These are some of the ways the media brought home the war in the Persian Gulf as a national spectacle. Looking to old and new technologies for mass communication--from CNN to comic books, from international new agencies to tabloids, from bomb sights to the Super Bowl--the essays in this collection show the ways in which public information is shaped, packaged, and disseminated. The contributors include Venise T. Berry, Victor J. Caldarola, Dana L. Cloud, Tom Engelhardt, Cynthia Enloe, H. Bruce Franklin, Daniel C. Hallin, Kim E. Product Description
The Road to Safwan is a complete history of the 1st Infantry Division's cavalry unit fighting in Operation Desert Storm. Stephen A. Bourque and John W. Burdan III served in the 1st Infantry--Bourque in Division Headquarters, Burdan as the Operations Officer of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry. Based on extensive interviews and primary sources, Bourque and Burdan provide the most in-depth coverage to date of a battalion-level unit in the 1991 war, showing how the unit deployed, went into combat, and adapted to changing circumstances.

The authors describe how the officers and men moved from the routine of cold war training to leading the Big Red One in battle through the Iraqi defenses and against the Iraqi Republican Guard. The 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry participated in the 1st Brigade attack on G-Day, the large tank battle for Objective Norfolk, the cutting of Basra Road, and the capture of Safwan Airfield, the site where General H. Norman Schwartzkopf conducted cease-fire negotiations with the Iraqis. The squadron's activities are placed squarely within the context of both division and corps activities, which illustrates the fog of war, the chain of command, and the uncertainty of information affecting command decisions.

The Road to Safwan challenges the myth that technology won the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Contrary to popular view, it was a soldier's war not much different from previous conflicts in its general nature. What was different was the quality and intensity of the unit's training, which resulted, repeatedly, in successful engagements and objectives secured. It is the story of the people, not the machines, which ultimately led this squadron to the small town of Safwan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remembering the Past
This book brought back many memories (events, names, etc.).With a son that is now in the service and served in Iraq, we can relate to each other. This book help him see my time in the Quarterhorse and gave him some insight to what we did in '91.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Road to Safwan
For an ex-military person, the book is well written. Anyone not familiar with military nomenclature, would be confused.

I was with the 1-4 Cav, Alpha troop 2nd Platoon during Desert Storm. There are a few stories that could have used a bit more investigation.

All that said, it was nice to relive many of the occurrences of 1990-91.

I would recommend it to any 1-4 Cav'er. ... Read more

Based on archival documentation and interviews with United States Air Force planners, it takes the reader into the planning cells where the difficult work of building an air campaign plan was accomplished on an around-the-clock basis.
