So Happy to have this book!!
Good resource if you are computer literate
starting point for computer crafts
Restoring modesty to the artist's tool enriches everyone It doesn't help matters that most design software seems to be written by the left-brain dominant spouses of craft practitioners...well intentioned souls with no sense of the real kinesthetics of working color, form, texture. Janet Ashford has navigated through the difficult middle course between technology and entrancement. She draws! She creates custom palettes in her application software! She doesn't hit you over the head or talk down to the reader.Perhaps her experience of designing for and with her daughter has given her the wonderful tone of teaching someone she likes, who is lacking in knowledge but not in ability. That is a prized gift in any teacher, and Ashford has it mastered. She has maintained her enthusiasm, her innocent pleasure in sharing the joys of color and pattern, line, light and form. She is conscientious in gathering really useful resources together into a book that can pay off in serious fun the first weekend you get to use it, without resorting to false expectations. Buy the book.Use the example. You, and your craft, will be enriched without hype or over-simplification.Serious artists and craftspeople do not expect the tool to do the real work of creation for them. This book is written for the serious artists and craftspeople at any stage of their careers...from about 9 years old on up.
An Inspiring Book You'll need some software to try the projects in it, an image editor of some kind and a printer. But that's all you need for most of the projects described.Janet Ashford has really creative ideas for transforming every day objects like metal tins and boxes, using computer designs. I can just about guarantee, if you're artistic at all and you buy this book, you'll not only enjoy it, but you'll wind up designing some really amazing things as a result! ... Read more |

i whish i can give it more than 5 starts
Best book on Windows GDI Great job, Yuan!
Excellent Coverage, Poorly Written I had a hard time following his technical jargon; it was no different than reading the MSDN help manual, which was really cut and dry.If it was his intent to write this book as a reference manual to demonstrate the features of GDI or for the advance developer (who probably doesn't need it to begin with), then he did a very good job. However, developers, like myself, who is just getting into GDI it just left me chasing the bandwagon. The sample code had little or no comments; it was difficult trying to match his explanation to the code sample because he would write the explanation in its entirety and then provide the code sample at the end.Feng, if your reading this, please provide the code explanation in the context that it is being referenced.I had a hard time referring back to your code sample while following your explanations. If you are a developer of C++, I recommend Kris Jamsa who does a very good job of organizing and structuring his books. If only Kris wrote a book on GDI, I would have opted for it than this one. ... Total Beginner's Book
Too basic The author should have chosen a couple of graphicprograms (ie Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro) and shown actual examples ofdifferent techniques that work well for web graphics (ie how to makelettering appear to glow or shimmer, liquid and fire effects, etc).Alsosome info on using scanned images would have been useful. If you'recompletely new to graphics then you may learn something from it (get thebook out of the library, it's not work buying), otherwise don't bother.

The supplementary CD includes implementation for most of the techniques covered in the book and full source code for an advanced render library in Cg/C++/OpenGL. The book also supplies some information on using MicrosoftNetMeeting, BoxTop Software's iVisit, and Mirabilis Software'sICQ. --David Wall Customer Reviews (3)
Bring the world into your living room! This is a greatbook! Ms Parker's writing style makes it seem like she is right there withyou, explaining each portion. More advanced users will know which parts toskip over, and most chapters stand on their own, so you don't have to readevery word to make sense of later chapters. This was good for me, sinceI was not the least bit interested in reading about the screen savers orhow to make a photo my background. This part seemed to drag out, but thatis from the viewpoint of an expert; if you have never done those things, you might need to spend the time reading about them. For that reason, thebook spends quite a bit on the basics of these ideas. So if you still havethe same background picture on your desktop that came with it, check outthis portion of the book. Other chapters cover tips for setting up thecam and choosing the best spots for broadcasting. If you want to startanother "cat-cam" or other pet-related site, it is worth readingher tips on how to make it exciting for your viewers even when the animalsdon't feel like being photographed. There are also some otherconsiderations you might want to read about before you invite anyone andeveryone into your home or office through a live webcam. Another sectiontells about how to use the still pictures you can capture with a cam tomake GIF animations. This could be for fun, e-mail, or for your web page. The author also goes into creating and editing movies and how to insert GIFanimations and movies into web pages. This could save you from tons ofangry e-mail when your dog refuses to go near the webcam once it's live. There is a chapter on troubleshooting problems and it seems to be rathercomplete. Just about every problem I can imagine occuring is listed herewith possible solutions and resources. I expected a list of other peoplewho have webcam, but a nice feature I didn't expect was interviews withsome of the pioneers and leaders in webcamming. This turned out to be quitea treat. Supplementary information in the book about videoconferencingwas great. I didn't expect to find it here either; the author could havewritten that separately and she and the publisher could have made a lotmore money selling it as another book. They didn't, so I think a "hatsoff" is in order. Thanks!
An Excellent Introduction to Webcamming! Webcamming hasreally taken off during the last two years. Schools, businesses, companies, corporations, and news reporting services have gone online to provide anumber of essential services such as news and weather reporting, onlineeducation, building security, Webcasting, Webconferencing, and themonitoring of children at home and in daycare facilities. Hobbyists have also provided some thoughtful uses as well, suchas wiring homes, offices, and other sites with cameras to provide all sortsof intriguing, but sometimes highly suspect video coverage! Webcamming has certainly made an impact on our society and Elisabeth Parkerwill walk her readers through the steps necessary to give them theopportunity experience this exciting technology firsthand. She makes anumber of solid recommendations for buying cameras, software, and services, helping her readers to make the better choices and help them save time andmoney in the process. Many of the programs she reviews in the book areavailable online for immediate trial use. Buying, installation, anddetailed operating instructions are provided to get readers up and runningin the shortest amount of time. I can hardly wait to join in the funmyself! not the in-depth tome that I expected It lacks apermuted index, which is a must for a book like this.A lot of thenitty-gritty information is presented as an aside to demonstrating theexamples instead of a well thoughout discussion. Some of these are in theindex and some are not. If you're looking for thorough discussions of theAWT architecture, keep looking. If you're looking for a good discussion ofhow to use layouts, this might be the book for you.
This is the best 1.1 compliant, AWT reference around!
Very good, if you're good too
Serious Java developers need to buy this book now!
Thorough, effective, and accurate. Excellent book. The book covers every aspect of the AWT, including events, containers vs components, layout managers, lightweight components, etc. Each discussion is peppered with effective examples that clarify the topic at hand. And, along the way, the authors point out good coding tips, such as the effective use of inner classes for event handling, proper object-oriented design, etc. As if that all wasn't enough, the second half of the book presents a very useful library of custom components that extend the AWT. The source code for this library is on the CD, and the book explains much of the source in detail. This section is also very valuable in learning to understand the AWT. In a world full of mediocre, inaccurate Java books, this one is a JOY to read ... Read more |
