Coastal Dunes Form and Process Edited by Karl F. Nordstrom Norbert Psuty Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08903, USA and Bill Carter Department of Environmental Studies, University of Ulster, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry, BT52 1SA, Northern Ireland Coastal Morphology and Research Series Series Editor: Eric C. F. Bird This book deals with the formation and establishment of coastal dunes—considering both forms and processes in a wide variety of environments. These landforms are among the most sensitive to environmental change, yet they provide extensive protection against both short-term erosion and flooding and long-term sea-level rise. Until now, there has not been any major book to deal specifically with coastal dunes. The current volume surveys a range of dune features, such as the ephemeral characteristics in the rapidly subsiding Mississippi delta, the extensive sand sheets of Australia and South Africa and the Holocene dunes of Western Europe and North America. This book will provide essential background information for ecological and management studies of coastal dunes. It will be of immense value to geomorphologists, ecologists and other environmental scientists who work on the management of coastal dunes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of Coastal Dunes: Form and Process
Coastal Dunes: Form and Process is a compilation of 16 research articles about coastal dune geomorphology with a focus on aeolian processes and landforms. The papers emphasize the complex dynamics ofwind flow, sediment source, vegetation cover, wave action as well as rates and types of aeolian transportand how these processes influence and create coastal dune landforms.

I found this book to be an excellent source of background information for coastal dune research. It is also touchstone bibliographic reference for works related to coastal dune geomorphology despite the fact that it is 12 years old.

I believe that the goals presented by the series editor, Eric Bird, are in fact achieved in this book. The goal was to have a collection that was of value not only for specialists and students in the field but also for those that are concerned with management and planning issues in the coastal environment. To this end it is a successful book in that it is technical for students who are undertaking research yet the conclusions and section summaries are excellent for those that need a broader context without the figures and rigorous analysis. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Prepared by some of the world's leading experts in the field, this book is the first summarizing work on the origin, importance and exploitation of paleokarst. It offers an extensive regional survey, mainly concerning the Northern Hemisphere, as well as a thorough analysis of the problems of research into paleokarst phenomena, with particular emphasis on theoretical contributions and practical exploitation. By concentrating on phenomena which have appeared in the course of geological history, the book represents a substantial development in the general theory of paleokarst and demonstrates the advantages of a comprehensive approach to the problem. Considerable emphasis is put on the economic importance of paleokarst phenomena, from the point of view of exploiting significant deposits of mineral raw materials, as well as from a civil engineering and hydrological point of view. Since the publication deals with a boundary scientific discipline, it is intended for specialists from various branches of science: geologists, paleontologists, economic geologists, geographers, mining engineers and hydrogeologists. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars award-winning author
Wolman won a medal in 2000 from the American Geophysical Union, and in thecitation they said, "although written 35 years ago, it remains one ofthe most cited works in geopmorphology and was recently republished byDover, not as a historical artifact but as required reading for the newestgeneration of fluvial geomorphologists. Brimming with clarity andliteracy... a good bedtime read." (well... at least for those who wantto understand stream morphology.)

4-0 out of 5 stars The classic of stream geomorphology
This book forms one of the foundations of the field of stream geomorphology from one of the founding fathers. I would recommend it as the basic text for someone serious about learning about fluvial geomorphology. Considerable work has been added to the field since Dr. Leopold's book wasfirst published in 1964 but this forms a very good synthesis of a complexsubject. As a civil engineer/geomorphologist, I have referred to this bookmany times over the past 25 years since I was one of his students atBerkeley. Product Description
Of interest to both the theoretical modeling community and to the field researcher, it explores the major hydrological processes encountered in the field, in the laboratory and through computer modeling. As such, the text is seen as a major contribution in the search for initiatives linking hillslope hydrology modeling, field methods for parameterization and new conceptualization based on field observation. Among the many topics covered are: vegetation and hydroclimate, determination of hydraulic soil properties, soil water hysteresis, surface sealing and infiltration, overland flow and erosion, hydrogeochemistry of snow and snowmelt, subsurface runoff, solute transport in soils and runoff production in peat-covered catchments. Each chapter provides state of the art discussions and indicates areas where further research is needed. ... Read more

Product Description
Discovering the rates at which landscapes change and the causes of these changes is a key current focus in geoscientific, environmental, ecological and archaeological research. The mechanisms are intricate involving many components - a complex of positive and negative feedback mechanisms, and scales varying from the solar system and global tectonics to the activities of microscopic organisms. In this book Andrew Goudie draws together the findings of many disparate disciplines (and of his own research) to present a coherent and structured account of what is known and what remains to be discovered about change and the variable rate of change in the shape and environment of the earth's surface. This is not a research monograph but a research synthesis presented in terms comprehensible to workers in a wide range of disciplines. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Geomorphology has now reached a certain level where the methodology, scientific content and results
being published in the field make it worthy of being considered as a major environmental research
area.

In preparing Environmental Geomorphology, the author has given priority to methodology and illustrative case-histories. Schemes and classifications that would be ill-suited for
a naturalistic, empirical and non-systematic discipline like geomorphology have been avoided.
The concepts outlined in the text are based on a subdivision of geomorphological resources and
hazards (as well as their links with man) together with the consequent risk and impact
problems.

Each investigation, study or intervention concerning the environment, cannot ignore
either the human context in which it occurs or man's history and prospects. It is necessary to have the
right dialogue and relationship with the other disciplines making up this system so as to apply the most
suitable methodologies and offer the most valid solutions.

For some subjects covered in the book, specialists concerned with a particular section of environmental geomorphology were consulted. The text of each
chapter is accompanied by several illustrative schemes, figures and photographs, derived from real
research and professional experiences.

The volume is addressed both to university students studying topics of geomorphology as part of their syllabus, and to researchers and consultants
(geologists, geographers, engineers, naturalists, etc.) working in the field. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A messy introduction to the subject
I found this book rather disappointing and short of information. If it was intended as a general introduction to applied and environmental geomorphology several topics deserved a much more in-depth treatment (a most conspicuous example, fluvial geomorphology...). A better balance could have been achieved regarding the relative importance of several issues: splash erosion by raindrops gets a very clear and extensive treatment, whereas coastal geomorphology and hillslope processes and hazards are hastily dealt with in relatively too few pages. I also noticed a strikingly incoherent attitude towards quantitative geomorphology and mathematical modelling: soil erosion and the general assessment of human impact on landforms are introduced on a quantitative basis, even exceedingly so if one considers the scope and purpose of the book; yet, such an approach is simply omitted in reporting about seismic risk or riverine processes. There is an evident bias toward work and experiences conducted by the author and his coauthors, which somewhat shrinks the scope of many discussions. Last, but not least, their English isnot up to the level of a scientific textbook aimed at an international readership, and about a quarter of cited works and authors are not to be found in the list of references!I'd say the strong point of their book is in the last two chapters, offering a good outline of procedures and methods for assessing and mapping geomorphic risk and hazard, as well as the opposite trends of human interference with the environment (still from a geomorphic perspective). All in all, a honest but minimal and idiosyncratic introduction to the subject. It's definitely not worth its price, and if you're looking for something seriously informative, then you're adviced to study on something else... ... Read more

Product Description
In 1889 William Morris Davis offered in his paper ``The Rivers and Valleys of Pennsylvania'' an elegant set of arguments for the origin of the ridges and gaps, and went on to propose a model for the drainage development and geomorphic evolution of the Appalachians. His work served to focus the geomorphic community into an intense, extended debate on the nature and fundamental controls of the long-term erosion of the Appalachians. The 100th anniversary of Davis' provocative paper prompted the convening of a symposium to address some of the fundamental questions about the Appalachians, the 1989 Geomorphology Symposium. The theme of this symposium was the geomorphic evolution of the Appalachians. This volume brings together a collection of papers from the symposium, to provide a summary of the current state of knowledge. ... Read more
