Extractions: top History of Guyana A History of the Republic of Guyana and British Guiana 1966 - Present Pre-European Colonization The area of the Guianas, bounded by the rivers of the Orinoco, Amazon, Rio Negro and the Atlantic Ocean, is believed to have been settled before 900 AD by Warrau Indians, and later by the Arawak and Carib tribes. However, there is no evidence from these times of a very advanced civilization. In 1489, Christopher Columbus sailed off the Wild Coast of the Guianas and the 1595 voyage of Sir Walter Raleigh to the New World led to subsequent accounts of El Dorado, the city of gold, which is believed to be in, or around, what is now Guyana. The Dutch, who began trading with Amerindians along the coast of Guyana, established two trading posts on the mainland, one in the Pomeroon and the other on the Abary Creek, around 1580. A small number of men from the trading vessels were left to look after the posts until the next vessel arrived. Back to Top European Colonization - 17th to 19th Century The Dutch trading post in the Pomeroon was relocated around 1616 to another area in Essequibo, at the junction of the Essequibo, Mazaruni and Cuyuni Rivers, where they built Fort Kyk-Over-Al (Kijk-Over-Al), the first major Dutch settlement in Guyana. In 1621, the merchants of Zeeland and other merchants united to form the West India Company and took over control of Essequibo.

The earliest account of the territory of Guiana is made in a dispatch to the Royal Council of Spain in which the Governor of Trinidad, Antonio de Berreo, describes his journey down the Oronoco and his attempt to explore Guiana. Sir Robert Dudley makes inquiries about the rumoured Empire of El Dorado when his ship puts in to Trinidad. A small boat is sent to investigate and its crew returns to say that the natives (Amerindians)had told them of gold-mines so rich that the people of the country powdered themselves with gold dust. 'And farre beyond them', they said, 'a great towne called El Dorado, with many other things.' The Dutch make their first voyage to Guiana. Dutch West India Company receives a charter for the Essequibo. Slaves arrive in the colonies from Africa. A small Dutch settlement is established on the Pomeroon River. War breaks out between England and Holland.

Extractions: El Dorado did not materialize. The Dutch established settlements on the coast of Guyana : NIEUW NICKERIE on the Corantijn river in 1613, ESSEQUIBO 1616, BERBICE 1627. A Dutch settlement at the Corantijn River (1613) in modern Suriname was destroyed by the Spanish the year after. When the WIC (Dutch United West Indian Company) was founded in 1621, Essequibo became one of it's first colonial assets. Sugar cane was introduced in 1658 and soon became the primary export product. Slaves were introduced from Africa to work the sugar plantations. English settlers settled in PARAMARIBO, SURINAME when Lord F. Willoughby sent an expedition to Suriname from Barbados in 1650. During the SECOND ANGLO-DUTCH WAR (1665-1667), ABRAHAM CRIJNSSEN occupied the English settlement. When, during the negotiations leading to the TREATY OF BREDA 1667, the English side offered to return New Netherlands (modern New York) in return for Suriname, the Dutch side declined. Suriname, with it's sugar plantations, promised higher profits than New Amsterdam (future New York). Suriname became possession of Zeeland, the province which had dispatched Crijnssen; in 1683, it sold the colony to the WIC for Hfl 260,000. The settlements were treated as distinct colonies.

Extractions: On the 9th November 1966 eight Professional Accountants Wilton Lloyd Wilson, A.S Ridler, J. Hudson, W. G. Stoll, J.L . Rawlins, Geo Gray, A.E. Bush and Noel F. Barcellos signed the Memorandum and Articles of Association for the incorporation under the Companies Act of the Guyana Association of Accountants, which was, renamed the Institute of Chartered Accounts of Guyana on the 11th July 1974. The Parliament of Guyana enacted the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Guyana Act 1991. This Act, which was assented to on 2nd April 1991, provides for the registration of persons as Chartered Accountants, to regulate the practice of accountancy and for matters connected therewith. The Institute has been very active in the regional development of the accounting profession. In the 1970s, under its then President Mr. John Barcellos Guyana endorsed the idea of a Regional Body of Accountants. On 28th October 1988 the ICAG was one of the signatories at the inaugural signing ceremony of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean (ICAC). The first Vice President of the ICAC was Mr Christopher L Ram of the ICAG. In 1998 the then President of ICAG , Mr Ronald Alli was elected as the Second President of the ICAC. While in the 1970s the membership of the ICAG was in excess of 200, the membership for the past few years average 45 as the country continues to be affected by ongoing migration. Notwithstanding the limited resources at its disposals the Institute continues to work assiduously for the development of accountants and the Accounting profession.

Extractions: The Jurassic and early Cretaceous sediments are believed to represent the southern extremity of the Central Atlantic Rift and ocean which extended from western Europe to the north to the present northeast corner of South America to the south. Sedimentation on the Demerara Rise at that time, occurred principally on the inner shelf, with significant continental influxes. In the Middle Albian, shallow marine to open marine environments of deposition prevailed as a response to the opening of the east-west oriented equatorial ocean and margins. The initiation of these margins along a dextral shear zone between South America and Africa in Barremian to Albian times have resulted in the formation of a few en-echelon folds, unconformable overlain by Albian to younger sediments.

The coast was sighted by Columbus in 1498 but was ignored by Spanish settlers. The Dutch settled in Guyana in the late 16th century. Although the Indigenous people welcomed the settlers, the settlers chose to exploit them, decimating the population, then bringing in African slaves to make up for the lost labor force. Their extent is 450 acres and formed part of Plantation Thomas, which belonged to the Quinten Hogg family, one of the wealthiest and most distinguished of our plantation owners. In 1863, the Hoggs donated this area to the Georgetown Town Council on the condition that it was to be used for educational and recreational purposes. The National Park , formerly occupied by the Demerara Golf Club since 1923 was renamed the Queen Elizabeth II National Park in 1965 in honour of the Queen's visit to Guyana. On Guyana's attainment of independence it was became known as the National Park. It was the scene for one of the most historic events of Guyana's history. On 26 May 1966 the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted and the Union Jack lowered marking the birth of Guyana. This park is utilized for cultural, educational and recreational activities and is maintained by The National Parks Commission under the Ministry of Agriculture. The Monument To the Child , located in the complex of the National Park was erected by the National Commission for The Right of The Child in 2000. The monument consists of the sun seated on an up sided down L, the vertical part signifying strength and the growth of children whilst the other arm indicates that children have to reach for the stars. The base of the monument is representative of the world and the six benches depict the six races of Guyana.

Tourist facilities are not fully developed, except for hotels in the capital city of Georgetown and a limited number of eco-resorts. The Central Office of Immigration located on Camp Street, Georgetown, must then note the extension in the visitor's passport.
