The Native South American Indians (Amerindian) Tribes were the original inhabitants. Slavery brought numerous Black Africans to The Caribbean and to Guyana's shores. The practice of Indentureship brought East Indians, who still speak Urdu, Hindi, and Tamil dialects. Chinese, Portuguese and a few other White Europeans, mostly from Great Britain, round out the population diversity. These various ethnic groups have remained somewhat distinct, but the lines are continuously being blurred. Indian groups include the Warao (Warrau), Arawak, Carib, Wapisiana (Wapishana), Arecuna, the mixed Spanish Arawak of the Moruka River, and many more in the forest areas. The Makusí (Macussí or Macushí) are the most prominent of the savanna peoples. Sizable concentrations of Amerindians inhabit the far west along the border with Venezuela and Brazil. They are rarely seen in the populated coastal areas, although a few have interbred with blacks and East Indians. Since 1970, traditional Amerindian lands near the international borders have come under government control, although Amerindians continue to hold village lands informally throughout Guyana's interior.

Extractions: April 8, 2003 4:24 AM For a South American country, Guyana presents a unique profile: it is English-speaking, and cricket playing is common. A mixture of British and Dutch in its legal and other internal systems is a legacy of past colonization, which has given Guyana its orientation towards the Caribbean economically, historically, and culturally. It is a member of the British Commonwealth, and the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). What distinguishes Guyana fundamentally from the West Indian Islands is that the 'ocean' of tropical forest behind Guyana's coastlands is not a mere surrounding or border. The great interior has always been a factor, and now promises at last to become the factor, in Guyana's development, as indeed it was at the beginning. Not only was the interior home for thousands of years to Guyana's indigenous people, but also the first Dutch trading posts and forts were established up-river, giving the colonists strategic access to the people and resources of the interior. Guyana must thank, or curse, sugar, for turning its development away from the interior to the muddy coastlands, and the Dutch, with their particular expertise in land reclamation and sea-defense, who were the first Europeans to arrive. Guyana's hinterland with its myriad species of flora and fauna, and its mostly untapped lumber and mineral resources, is becoming a focal area for national development. In addition, the construction of the long-awaited road to Brazil is now being given serious attention. This new infrastructure will give Guyana its connection to the great road networks of the continent and potentially begin a more integrated development plan.

Invited as a special guest, this Native American Music Award nominee from the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, demonstrated the dynamism of Aboriginal Canadian performing arts to the Guyanese people. In Canada, Sino General spends much of his time sharing his deep knowledge of First Nations cultural traditions with school groups across the country. During his visit, he had the opportunity to carry out these activities in Guyana, speaking school audiences and giving demonstrations of pow-wow dancing. Acts of desperation intended, it's often said, to "send a message" from one raging side to another then roused to answering rage. Take the recent case of Parbattie Kamille Seenauth, 31, known as Paro, described in the press as "the shallow grave victim", her body found in a Georgetown backyard on February 15, 2002; and Pamela Alves, 41, also known as Patricia Grenville, the "shallow grave suspect", reputedly "a spiritual healer", in whose backyard the body was buried. It seems that months earlier Paro had left her home in Charity, Pomeroon "seeking a better life in the city". "Her body was discoveredafter neighbors tipped off police that someone was seen burying a corpse in a shallow grave in the yard.

The name is derived from an Amerindian word meaning "the celebration of a job well done," and 'Mash' as the festival is often called, is a celebration indeed. Guyanese living abroad often arrange their yearly visits to coincide with the weeklong carnival, which incorporates steel band competitions and sporting events. Masquerade bands appear in the streets and in competitions at National Park, performing dance routines that are a vivid reminder of Guyana's African heritage. Traditional masquerade characters include the bouncer like Mad Bull, Mother Sally (a parody of a plantation lady); flouncers, who beg for money using intricate dance moves; and stick-fighters. Calypsos laced with barbed social commentary are an integral part of 'Mash' celebrations, which culminate in the coronation of the king or queen for the year.
