Medsearch can be found on the Internet at http://www.GulfLINK.osd.mil/medsearch "This website, a cooperative effort in support of Gulf War veterans and their families, reflects the commitment of all three agencies to learning more about deployment related illnesses, and sharing what we learn," said Dr. William Winkenwerder Jr., assistant secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. In July 2001, DoD, VA and CDC agreed to combine their resources to create this one-stop source of research information. The development team worked with veterans and researchers to ensure that Medsearch was user-friendly. Developers designed the website to serve the needs of both the layperson and the researcher. The site is indexed with plain language topic headings so that anyone can readily locate information. Those headings include topics of particular interest to Gulf War veterans that may not be featured in other sources, such as pesticides and depleted uranium. Scientists, who want more specific data, will find it on Medseach as well.

The fraudulent story of Iraqi soldiers throwing Kuwaiti babies out of incubators during the occupation of Kuwait in 1990 is depicted as if it were true in “Live from Baghdad," the HBO film premiering on the cable network this Saturday that purports to tell the story behind CNN ’s coverage of the Gulf War. HBO and CNN are both owned by the AOL Time Warner media conglomerate. In the months before the Gulf War began, media uncritically repeated the claim that Iraqi soldiers were removing Kuwaiti babies from incubators. The story was launched by the testimony of a 15-year-old Kuwaiti girl before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus in October 1990. Eventually, as repeated in the media by the first President Bush and countless others, it blossomed into a tale involving over 300 Kuwaiti babies. ABC World News Tonight, 3/15/91). In the film, the story is turned upside down, portrayed as a deft public relations move by the Iraqi government, who grant CNN access to Kuwait in a calculated attempt to discredit the rumors that their soldiers were pulling babies from incubators.

Another factor that holds to this day, was that the transfer of Strategic Air Command (SAC) aircraft between units discourages the practice, because they are repainted each time (Ethell, p. 173). From the early 1980s through 1991, nose art was on the rise, beginning with a few selected units, and expanding to all types of aircraft in the air force. Its comeback is largely due to its official revival. The resurgence actually began as early as the 1970s with the U.S. Air Force Project Warrior, which was an effort to commemorate aircraft's past history. The 380th Bomb Wing and the 509th Bomb Wing, in the spirit of the project, began painting art on its aircraft, and, although against regulations, the art was allowed to remain. In the early 1980s, SAC ruled that specific historical units could have historical nose art (Davis, v. 3, p. 7). In the interest of morale, in 1985 a SAC regulation permitted nose art for other aircraft with the provision that the presentation was tasteful and that there was no nudity. Even with expressed approval, individual art was not practiced uniformly across all units. Schwartzkopf had previously (in an interview with Frontline ) called hindsight a fantasy world. Perhaps we will never hear Schwartzkopf explain how something can be both hindsight and fantasy. One who has both made and written history is Henry Kissinger. Unlike Bush and Schwartzkopf, he is a trained historian. I have never heard him argue by complaining about hindsight or arguing that someone is a revisionist. He defends himself with details as to what he and and the government he was serving were trying to do. Historians should avoid the self-congratulation and sentimentality common in the remembrances of those who have exercised power. If history were written only by those who made it, most history would not be worth reading.

At temperatures of 200-400 degrees Centigrade, uranium powder may self-ignite in atmospheres of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Oxidation of uranium under certain conditions may generate sufficient energy to cause an explosion (Gindler 1973). Friction caused by bullet or missile entry into a tank or armored car, for example, can cause the uranium to ignite, forming a concentrated ceramic aerosol capable of killing most personnel in the vehicle. Depleted uranium was used extensively in place of tungsten for ordnance by the US and UK in the Gulf War. There is no dispute of the fact that at least 320 tons of depleted uranium (DU) was "lost" in the Gulf war, and that much of that was converted at high temperature into an aerosol, that is, minute insoluble particles of uranium oxide, UO or UO , in a mist or fog. It would have been impossible for ground troops to identify this exposure if or when it occurred in war, as this would require specialized detection equipment. However, veterans can identify situations in which they were likely to have been exposed to DU. Civilians working at military bases where live ammunition exercises are conducted may also have been exposed.

A microbiologist reported finding a certain genetic material in about 80 percent of Gulf War-era soldiers tested, compared with a rate of just 5 percent in the general population. "We found a fragment, a piece of a virus, that's floating in the blood of Gulf War veterans, and it's not in the general population," said Dr. Howard Urnovitz, of Berkeley, California. All showed the same genetic material, but did not develop syndrome symptoms. That may imply most or all of the soldiers may have picked up the suspected virus before their deployment, then something in the Gulf triggered their illnesses. Specifically, Urnovitz said he found unique genetic bands in 29 of 36 Gulf War veterans from California and Arkansas, as well as in eight Arkansas veterans who did not serve in the region. A random selection of 22 civilians found the band in only one person. Military officials declined to comment on Urnovitz's study until it could be analyzed.
