Extractions: DESCRIPTIONS Pausanias was born in Magnesia, near Mount Sipylos in 115 A.D. In his work he mentions the area of Mt. Sipylos with such accuracy that it is higly probable that he was born in the region. Evidence is found in 1.21.3, 3.22.4, and 7.27.12. It is very much obvious that he had quite a bit of schooling and that he was a learned man. There has been debate about his living in an important urban site, and the most importannt site near the area of Mount Sipylos is Magnesia, approximately halfway between Sardis and the sea. Ergo, Pausanias would have grown up as part of the Greek world, but apart of the area which he describes in his Descriptions of Greece , the Greek Mainland. Pausanias' work, Descriptions of Greece , might as well be considered a guidebook. He indulges in great detail in his accounts as to what he saw as he travelled the mainland Greek homeland. Geography and topography organize the book, but his mentions of sites and monuments take a cultural and historical perspective, instead of being of archaeological or artistic interest.

The major security conference held over the weekend highlighted the rift between the United States and Germany, in particular, regarding the prospects of a war against Iraq. The U.S. was particularly incensed at reports leaked to the press of a Franco-German initiative that would stall preparations for a war against Iraq at the United Nations, stressing that it had not been officially informed of the plan.

Greece is a small country, but there traditionally have been meant destinctive regional differences. Some important regions are northern Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Crete. These differencs today are most apparent in folk costumes. HBC is not sure of just how clothing styles varied in different regions. We do know that as in other countruies, traditional fashions generally tended to persist in the rural areas and small villages. After World War II these differences began to decline. Today with television and modern media, there are few differences, except in folk costumes among clothing styles in different regions. Anatolia or modern Turkey is often referred to as Asia Minor by the Greeks. It is one of the most contested areas in human history. TIt has been at times controlled and influences by the Greeks. The Greek seage of Troy occurred at the dawn of recorded history. The Persians threatened Greece when they conquered Asian Minor. Alexander later Helenized the region after defeating the Persians. The Ottomans completed the conquest of Asian Minor when Constaninople fell in 1452, but large numbers of Greeks continued to live in Asia Minor, especially in coastal areas until the 1920s. A war between Greece and Turkey following World War I resulted in a Greek defeat. Much of the Greek population left with the retreating Greek Army or in the repressions and forced resettlerments conducted by the Turks after the war.
THE PAUL GINIS COLLECTION Although a halfway station between Italy and greece, it was influenced by the village-styleof costume of the neighboring mainland rather than the urban dress http://www.emoreiro.com/GAFS/other.htm
Extractions: ASIA MINOR: PONTOS The Pontian dress was an urban costume, in accordance with the eastern models which began life in the center of Hellenism at that time, Constantinople. This phenomenon was to be observed in most urban centers of the Ottoman Empire. Underneath the ladies wore a fine silk chemise, the bodice and sleeves of which were trimmed with crocheted lace, and then a pair of silk or satin breeches. Next came the well-known urban style kavadi , open at the front and with two side openings down to the hips. This garment was always lined and decorated round the hem with silk ribbon and delicate embroidery. Round the hips was wound a large silk scarf, trimmed with fringe of silk thread, folded into a triangle. With the birth of the first child, this scarf was replaced by one made of fine striped taffeta which was tied at the back, hanging down like an apron on the front. It was carefully ironed into ten-centimeter-wide horizontal creases. Silk jabots were positioned on the bodice, trimmed with white silk embroidery and crocheted lace or gold stitching. On top of this went a sleeved waistcoat, originally of black felt and later of dark-colored velvet decorated with silver stitches. From the wedding day onwards the bride wore a silk- covered disc decorated with a row of little coins that hung across the forehead. Dora Stratou Theater OLD ATHENS: THE BRIDAL COSTUME The girl's costume, particularly her festival one, is composed of pieces with a very old formal tradition. The matchmaking process began when the children were still very young. Care was taken to ensure that both children were in the same social class. During the engagement and right up to the wedding the young people never met; they did, however, exchange gifts. What the girl's dowry contained depended on her social class and wealth. When the time came, the bridal outfit was prepared. The bride's hair was washed with henna, then it was braided into small plaits (about 40). Gold and silk thread the color of the bride's hair was woven into it. Her female relatives helped the bride put on her very expensive bridal outfit. They put on the

Extractions: Geography Greece is a peninsular country, having an archipelago of about 2,000 islands. Greece is in Southern Europe, bordering the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, between Albania and Turkey. The latitude and longitude is 39 00 N, 22 00 E. The total area of Greece is 131,940 sq. km. It is slightly smaller than the state of Alabama. 13,676 km. is the total coastline. The climate of Greece is temperate; mild, wet winters; hot, dry summers. The terrain is mostly mountains with ranges extending into the sea as peninsulas or chains of islands. Mount Olympus at 2,917 m. is the highest elevation, while the Mediterranean Sea at m. is the lowest elevation. Bauxite, lignite, magnesite, petroleum, marble, and hydropower are the natural resources. Most of Greece is made up of limestone, either bare or covered with thorny, woody shrubbery, known as maquis. The soil, which covers about 70% of the land, is poor and stony. In several big coastal and interior areas the soil is rich. Because of mountains, the land is divided into many land areas. The Pindus Mountains forms a barrier between the east and west mainland. These mountains rise up to 8,000 feet above sea level. Land regions are also shaped by water. Many peninsulas and islands can be found in the country. Islands make up 20% of Greece's land. It lies in the far northeastern area, west of Turkey and south of Bulgaria. The huge, barren Rhodope Mountains near Bulgaria and a narrow plain dominate Thrace. Tobacco is grown there. It is the home of Greece's biggest group of Turkish-speaking Muslims.

Press Releases: No. 5 September 2001 This individuality is reflected also in the geographical division of the countryGreece has as many property markets as it has islands and mainland regions. http://www.immofair-muenchen.de/englisch/presse/archiv/5_2002.html
Extractions: The market for holiday property in Germany is a market with strong growth prospects: According to a survey by the Munich Institute of Leisure Studies, around 400,000 households are planning to purchase a holiday home in the next five years. And, almost one million German households will acquire a holiday property or retirement home by 2010. In March 2002, prospective buyers have the opportunity of finding out all about lots of different properties for sale abroad: at IMMOFAIR, Fair for Houses and Flats in Germany and Other Countries, which takes place over one weekend at the M,O,C, in Munich-Freimann. International property developers, real estate agents and companies will be coming along to present their portfolios of property, ranging from the small holiday apartment at around DM 50,000 to expensive luxury villas. The focus of the international property on offer at the fair is primarily on the Mediterranean, because the key criteria in choosing a second home are still a warm climate and a high standard of living. Traditionally the most popular destinations are Spain, followed by Italy. France, once also in the top group, is now having to give up its place to Greece, according to the results of a survey conducted at IMMOFAIR 2001. Greece, the cradle of European civilisation, together with Cyprus, which is very similar in terms of atmosphere and infrastructure, is where strongest growth for holiday property is being reported in Europe.
