Extractions: Location Greece is a northwest suburb of Rochester in New York. It is bounded on the north by Lake Ontario History The town of Greece was established by the New York State Legislature on March 22, 1822. Between 1822 and World War I, Greece evolved into an agricultural community as the wilderness gave way to farms rooted in glacial rich soil. With access to Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, Erie Canal and Ridge Road, the Town became a transportation hub and a major supplier of farm produce. After World War I, Greece began to shed its rural agricultural character. Continuing gradual expansion of Kodak Park brought about related residential growth. Annexations by the City of Rochester between 1916 and 1919 cut the Town's population in half but steady growth more than offset the loss. The Town experienced explosive growth following World War II. Major additions were made to Kodak Park and the farms and orchards gave way to homes.

During the Bronze Age (3000-1200 BC) the powerful Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean maritime civilisations flourished. According to Homer, this was a time of violence and wars based on trade rivalries, although it is thought that Minoan culture was generally peaceful and harmonious. By the 11th century BC the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had collapsed, due to changing patterns of trade and a Dorian invasion from the north, and a 'dark age' ensued. Golden Age. By 800 BC Greece was undergoing a cultural and military revival, with the evolution of city-states, the most powerful of which were Athens and Sparta. Greater Greece was created, with southern Italy as an important component. This period was followed by an era of great prosperity known as the classical (or golden) age. During this time, Pericles commissioned the Parthenon Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King Socrates taught young Athenians the rigours of logic, and a tradition of democracy (literally, 'control by the people') was ushered in. A major milestone in the island's history, which affected the fate of the other Dodecanese as well, was the founding in 700 B.C. of the Dorian Hexapolis, a union of its three cities with Knidos, Halikarnassos and Kos. Its economy and culture continued to flourish until the 3rd century B.C., when it was the predominant power in the Aegean. When. A thousand years later in 1309, it fell into the hands of the Knights of St. John; it became again the centre of power, symbolized by its magnificent mediaeval town and the imposing castle and palace of the Grand Masters. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were works of art and architecture regarded by ancient Greeks and Romans as the most extraordinary accomplishments of the human kind. The Colossus of Rhodes was a 30-m (100-ft) bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios, erected about 280 BC to guard the entrance to the harbour at Rhodes; it was destroyed about 55 years later.

Very often the destruction of Thera is identified with the sinking of mythical Atlantis. The real fact of the submergence of Santorini or other Islands in Aegean Sea during an eruption of the volcano, together with the imagination or wish for a Perfect City may explain the legend. The legend, which Plato presented in his dialogues Timaios and Kritias, is a story, which was told to Kritias by his great-grandfather, who had heard it from his father, Dropidas and he from the sagacious legislator Solon. According to the story Atlantis was an extensive insular continent whose inhabitants had developed an exceptionally high standard of civilization. The unique power of the kings of Atlantis was not only confined to their own continent but extended to the surrounding islands and controlled part of Libya, as far as Egypt, as well as part of Europe up to Tyrrhenia (Northern Italy). Since the days of Plato to the present day many attempts have been made to interpret the myth or even to rediscover Atlantis. Thousands of studies and articles have been written on this subject. The fact is that Plato, through the myth, presented to his fellow-citizens a paradigm of an ideally organized state which flowered and prospered for as long as men respected and enforced the laws and worshipped the gods who had given them the legislation. However, when the men became arrogant and ceased to obey the laws of their state the wrath of the gods was such that they were condemned to annihilation.

Athens, named after its patron goddess Athena, was inhabited in the Bronze Age. Extractions: Long the home of the Seneca Indians, the area which would become the Town of Greece was first visited by the French explorer LaSalle in 1669. This area would be witness to numerous troop movements over the next century as the French and English fought for control of North America. The Indian trail on the Ridge became the roadway along which English troops under General John Prideaux marched against the French at Fort Niagara. Later this same trail would carry pioneers and settlers westward. The first permanent settlement was established in 1792 along the west side of the Genesee River at King's Landing, later to be named Hanford Landing. With the establishment of the Port of the Genesee by President Thomas Jefferson in 1805, trade from the Great Lakes began to pour in. With access to Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, Ridge Road and later the Erie Canal, the Town became a transportation hub and a major supplier of farm produce to the new and growing nation. Originally called Northampton, the Town of Greece was established by the New York State Legislature on March 22, 1822. Its name was chosen because of the current wave of sympathy toward the Greeks who were then fighting for independence from Turkish rule. The Town seat was named Charlotte for the daughter of Colonel Troup, the land agent for an English estate which owned much of western New York at the time. Charlotte itself was incorporated as a village in 1869, and was part of Greece until 1916 when it was annexed to the City of Rochester as the 23rd Ward.

Some have become destinations for pilgrimages while others carry on the spiritual tradions of long ago. Leimonos Monastery , (pictured on left) built in 1523 is a large cluster of buildings between Kaloni and Filia. It is an important spiritual center on the island with a museum, a library and social services. Overnight stays are possible. They have a festival here celebrating Ag. Ignatious on the second weekend of October. A modern day phenomenon is the developing Monastery of Agiou Raphael in Thermi. People come from all over Greece to the shrine of the Newly Sanctified Martyrs of Raphael, the Father Superior of the destroyed monastery, of Nikolas, the deacon, and the young Irene, all three of whom died as martyrs at the hands of the Turks in 1463. A miracle was responsible for the discovery of the bodies of the saints, by Angelos Rallis, who donated the land for the monastery. This monastery is constantly visited year-round by pilgrims searching for a miracle. The complex has rooms for overnight stays. There is a celebration here on the Tuesday after Easter.
