They were not the common green or yellow kind which you see jumping in the fields to-day, nor yet the red, yellow and black winged "dusty roaders" which boys chase down the lane. These were the Rocky Mountain grasshoppers, with slender bodies, light gray wings and enormous appetites. Their home was on the high plains and among the hills at the foot of the great mountains of the West. Here they lived and raised their families. In dry years there were more children and less food at home. Then they assembled and flew away in great swarms to the east and south. They traveled hundreds of miles. Sometimes in clear, warm moonlight they flew all night. More often they settled down late in the afternoon to rest and feed, and pursued their journey on the morrow. It was a sad day for the settlers where the grasshoppers lighted. Eight times between 1857 and 1875 some parts of our state were visited by them, but the great grasshopper raid came on July 20th, 21st and 22d, 1874. Suddenly, along the entire frontier of Nebraska, Kansas, Dakota and Minnesota, the air was filled with grasshoppers. There were billions of them in the great clouds which darkened the sun. The vibration of their wings filled the ear with a roaring sound like a rushing storm, followed by a deep hush as they dropped to the earth and began to devour the crops.

Feed on any available vegetation. When abundant, they may destroy complete plantings of such crops as lettuce and potato. Throughout United States. They are especially troublesome in central and northwestern states. Female grasshoppers lay eggs in sodded areas towards the end of summer. Nymphs emerge from these overwintering eggs near the beginning of summer and begin feeding on young plants. As the grasshopper nymphs mature, they migrate to other areas and feed on a large variety of plants. Nymphs mature into adults in about 1 1/2 to 2 months. Adults continue feeding until killed by cold temperatures. Avoid planting gardens next to hay fields and ditch banks with high grasshopper populations. Seedlings may be protected by covering them with netting or cheescloth. Removal of debris and turning of the soil with help expose the eggs to predators and the weather. Birds such as crows, cat birds, bluebirds, mockingbirds, and sparrows are natural predators of grasshoppers. Spiders may also eat them.

    Extractions: References The family Pneumoridae is a group of 17 species distributed along the coast of southern Africa, but also extending northwards into Tanzania and Uganda ( map ). Most species occur in transitional habitat comprising mosaics of bush and grassland, with the rest in forests or desert. All species are highly cryptic in appearance and behavior, being color matched to their particular food plant and rarely noticed except at night when the loud mate location call of the male may be heard 2 km away. There are large differences in the morphology and behavior of adult males and females. Only adult males are capable of flight and may be attracted to light, but when approached during the day generally do not fly. In several species males can either develop an inflated abdomen or mate as a flightless alternative morph without the anatomy and behavior for sexual signaling (Alexander and van Staaden, 1989). These are among the most frequently encountered and easily observed of the Sonoran Desert insects in the late summer. The most noticeable feature of grasshoppers is their long, jumping hind legs, which enable them to leap well over 20 times their body length (imagine a 6-foot tall person jumping 120 feet!). However, while the powerful jumping muscles of the hind legs provide the force necessary for leaping, they cannot propel the grasshopper in these impressive leaps unaided. Most of the kinetic energy to do this comes not from the muscles, but from the semilunar crescent located in the knee of the hind leg. This crescent-shaped organ is made of elastic fibers that store energy in preparation for a jump; they release this energy explosively, propelling the grasshopper forward many times its body length. Grasshoppers develop through incomplete metamorphosis. The nymphs appear similar to the adults except that they lack wings and have incomplete reproductive organs. The number of instars (larval stages between molts) through which a grasshopper develops before reaching adulthood is fixed in some species (typically 4 to 6). In others, it depends on growing conditions: the better the conditions, the fewer the immature stages.
