Extractions: There are many formats for storing pictures in digital format. Images associated with personal computer systems are stored in pixel format. A pixel is an individual dot or element with associated intensity and color information. Pixels are combined to form images. The size of each pixel is a function of the quality of the monitor. For most monitors, the pixel size is about 0.28mm. Color Depth Some storage formats for pictures involve compression , a technique that reduces the amount of storage space required for the picture, often at the expense of quality. Other formats alter the color depth of the image, as less color will require less storage space. Color depth refers to the number of unique colors used by the image. Using more colors in a picture will require more storage space (bytes). For instance, a single bit can be either on or off. This would correspond to two colors, black and white. Using 8 bits for each pixel would result in a color depth of 256 colors. The more colors you have, the more realistic and natural the image looks. The following table shows the connection between color depth and the number of bits representing that color depth.

On the Web, users and developers have already adopted two powerful ways to compose active processing with information distribution: active pages ("cgi-bin") and active proxies . In this position paper, we focus on the latter as a tool for parties beyond the original developer to externalize extensions to a software or information architecture. Independent extensibility is a critical affordance of compositional software architectures. To realize the full potential of concurrent evolution of systems by all the system's stakeholders, architects should be encouraged to support externalized, component-oriented hooks. In particular, active proxies on the Web demonstrate the power of independent evolution and the serendipitous synergy of orthogonal services. Soon, HTTP in conjunction with PEP will systematize this power and bring it to clients and servers as well. Extractions: SYNOPSIS The Raster3D molecular graphics package consists of a core program render and a number of ancillary programs ( balls ribbon rods ) which produce input files for rendering from Brookhaven PDB files of atomic coordinates. Raster3D can also render images composed using version 1.4 of Molscript [Per Kraulis (1991) J. Appl. Cryst. 24, 946-950]. Raster3D uses a fast Z-buffer algorithm to produce high quality pixel images featuring two light sources, specular highlighting, Phong shaded surfaces, and shadowing. Output is in the form of a pixel image with 24 bits of color information per pixel. Raster3D does not depend on graphics hardware for operation. Four image output formats are supported: AVS, TIFF, SGI libimage, and a private format which is backwards-compatible with earlier versions of Raster3D. To actually view or manipulate the images produced, you must also have installed an image viewing package (e.g. John Cristy's ImageMagick or the SGI libimage utilities). Although the rendering program is not specific to molecular graphics, Raster3D is not intended as a general purpose ray-tracing program. Ancillary programs are provided only for the generation of object descriptions based on atomic coordinates stored in Brookhaven PDB format. Raster3D Version 2.1 supports rendering of five object types: spheres, triangles, planes, smooth-ended cylinders, and round-ended cylinders. New in version 2.1 is support for two additional "object types" which are really modifiers for characteristic properties of existing objects. One of these allows specification of explicit surface normals at triangle vertices; the other allows specification of surface reflectance properties specific to individual objects. Neither of these features is used by the current version of the auxilliary programs distributed with Raster3D, but their inclusion may encourage use of the Raster3D rendering program in conjunction with other code which depends on these capabilities. The provision for explicit surface normals, for example, should allow the use of Raster3D to render general molecular surfaces.
