The 233 non-human species of primates, including chimpanzees and other apes as well as monkeys, are collectively the most imperiled group of mammals on our planet. Almost half already face extinction, and nearly 20 percent more may soon reach threatened status, reports the Worldwatch Institute in "Death in the Family Tree", an article in the September/October 1997 issue of WORLD WATCH magazine. "We already knew that birds, freshwater fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals in general are declining in number and diversity," says author John Tuxill, a staff researcher at Worldwatch, "a warning that the Earth's biological diversity, which supports our economic wealth, is in trouble. Perhaps by realizing that human activity now threatens creatures like ourselves such as chimpanzees and gorillas, we will finally take meaningful action." Forest habitat loss to logging, mining, and encroaching human settlements is the biggest problem facing threatened primates. Hunting for food (one in three threatened primates is unsustainably hunted) and the largely illegal pet trade, which affects the "charismatic" species such as orangutans and gibbons, follow closely.

It would have been ideal to examine three primates from each continent, but at the Los Angeles Zoo, the primates there only represented Africa, South America and what the Los Angeles zoo calls "Eurasia." For this study I observed three different primates from Africa, two primates from South America, and two primates from "Eurasia". I wasn't able to observe any primates from Australia or Northern America at the zoo. The primates that I observed from Africa were the Colobus Monkey, the Ringed tailed Lemur, and the Western low land Gorilla which are all Old World Primates. The primates I observed from South America were the Howler monkey, and the Uakari. The primates that were observed from "Eurasia" were the Orangutan and the Siamang. Howler Monkey Howler monkeys are in the class Aloutta and are simian new world monkeys. They eat tough green vegetation and have strong dentition to eat through their foods. Howlers can be found in the Andean forest, at altitudes of 2,800 m above sea level. These primates moved among branches and trees, but they didnt display the jumping or hoping like the Colobus and the Lemurs did. In fact they didnt move fast in the trees, and when they moved from branch to branch, they would pull the branch inward that they were moving to, then they would swing on it.

But it doesn't seem to have occurred to you that there are thousands of human children suffering on the very same continent of Africa. There'll be time enough to worry about gorillas when we've taken care of every last one of the kiddies. Let's get our priorities right, please! This hypothetical letter could have been written by almost any well-meaning person today. In lampooning it, I don't mean to imply that a good case could not be made for giving human children priority I expect it could, and also that a good case could be made the other way. I'm only trying to point the finger at the automatic, unthinking nature of the speciesist double standard. To many people it is simply self-evident, without any discussion, that humans are entitled to special treatment.

The forests are being destroyed and gorillas are being killed and snared for ‘bushmeat’ to feed the hundreds of miners and to sell at markets. Recent reports indicate that up to 90% of eastern lowland gorillas may have been killed in the last 3 years. Fears are that without immediate political action, they may be headed towards an inescapable extinction. Born Free and Dian Fossey Gorrila Fund commissioned a report by Ian Redmond, Wildlife Consultant and Ape Alliance Chair, into the trade in coltan in DRC and the desperate consequences for the gorillas.
