His latest is the story of the fourth of seven children born to poor Swedish immigrants, and it seems Babe's life was set up for struggle. During her life she fought poverty, gender stereotyping, the world's confusion at a female athlete whose passion for, and skill at sports crossed boundaries, until she met her final contender-cancer. Freedman does an excellent job of surrounding Babe in historical and personal context so her individualistic and sometimes apparently self-proud persona makes total sense. The book is filled with wonderful photographs, pithy quotations, and the depth of research and understanding for which Freeman is deservedly esteemed. 2000, Clarion, $18.00, Ages 9 up. Extractions: Team Double Bogey Villanova University CSC 4700, Section 2 February 5, 2001 Dear Mr. Venn: Hello. We are Team Double Bogey, group number nine, in Dr. Joyce's Software Engineering class. We have been assigned to design a Fantasy Golf League Stat Site that will be web-based and will act much like other fantasy sports leagues that currently exist. We plan to design this Site based on the rules and regulations of the Rotisserie Golf League at the CyberZahm web site. To help us get started, we have put together a group of questions that we feel will aid us in making this site function as necessary. We thank you in advance for your input and suggestions. 1) What are the specific starting and ending periods for the season? Do they go by particular tournaments or by dates? 2) What permissions or abilities does the league commissioner need to have that the regular members do not? In other words, what features or tools would the commissioner need on the site? 3) Since there is a possibility that not every golfer will be in the same number of tournaments, is there any type of weighting used? 4) When and how is the money processed for transactions that take place during the season, and does this money get included in the pot or is it used for something else? 5) Which of the following are necessary on the site and which would be optional? a) standings b) member bios c) pool of availible players d) PGA players stats e) league history (information about years past) f) up to date results from tournaments (enterable by the administrator) 6) Is there a special format that should be used to display data? (by golfer rankings, team owner standings, golfers of a particular tournament) 7) Do the members have the ability to make trades, release players, pick up players, etc. on their own? Or do they need the approval of the commissioner? 8) Are there any relevant internet links that should be included that owners can easily reach? 9) Could you further explain the ideas of skins and side bets included in the rules of the CyberZahm website? 10) Are there any security measures that need to be taken as far as non-members viewing information for the website, or can anyone access the data? Sincerely, Team Double Bogey David Elia Annie Damiano Michael Chan Robert Keaser Reponse: Team Double Bogey > Villanova University > CSC 4700, Section 2 > February 14, 2001 > > Dear Mr. Venn: > > Hello. The comissioner must approve all actions that > take place as well as update statistics and team rosters. > All actions that members make, including joining the league, > have fees associated with them. We are also assuming that the pool > of available players will be included on the website prior to the draft. > > To help us get started, we have put together a group of questions > that we feel will aid us in making this site function as necessary. > We thank you in advance for your input and suggestions. > > 1) What are the specific starting and ending periods for the season? > Do they go by particular tournaments or by dates? We start with the first tournament of the new year. This year that was the World Golf Championship Match Play tournament. Our season ends with the Tour Championship (and any other PGA tournament held during that same weekend). The Tour Championship normally ends the first weekend in November. Our current golf rules are published at the following URL: http://www.csc.vill.edu/~joyce/czahm/golfrules > > 2) Should the comissioner have a separate account other than a > regular member account in order to make updates to the website? Yes. I believe that only the Commissioner should be able to change/update team rosters. Letting players do it opens up the possibility of a player changing their roster after a tournament begins. That would give someone an unfair advantage. > > 3) How will members communicate to request trades and bets with other > players? (e-mail, phone, web site message board) Could/Should be all of the above. > > 4) When and how is the money processed for transactions that take place > during the season, and does this money get included in the pot or is > it used for something else? Should the website handle monetary > transactions? No. The website should calculate winnings/losses, but all monetary transactions will be handled personally by the members. All debts are settled at the end of the season. > > 5) Should the website display all transactions made, both for roster > changes and monetary transactions? Yes, but only league members should be able to view this information. > Also, who would be allowed to > view these transactions? (only that member or the entire league?) The entire league. > > 6) How will new golfers get drafted mid-season? After the original draft, new golfers are acquired through a waiver process. A league member can waive an existing player and acquire a player from the undrafted pool. The waived player goes back into the open pool and can be acquired by someone else during the next waiver period. I'd encourage you to read the current rules at the site identified above. > > 7) Should there be automatic reminders on deadlines and payments from > the website or will the comissioner to it manually? Automatic reminders on deadlines would be great. Payments will be handled off-line. > > 8) Are there any relevant internet links that should be included that > owners can easily reach? The PGA site: http://www.pgatour.com > > 9) Could you further explain the ideas of skins and side bets included > in the rules of the CyberZahm website? Skins: Everyone wagers $3/week. Eleven league members means a weekly pot of $33. If you have a golfer in active status (not a caddy, i.e., inactive status), and that golfer wins the weekly tournament, then you win a skin (the $33 pot). If the winner of the weekly tournament is an undrafted golfer, or is an inactive player on a team (i.e., a caddy), then there is a skin rollover and the pot the next week would be worth $66. The pot builds until a golfer in active status wins a tournament. Side bets: These are made between the members before the season starts (usually). They could be based upon anything, and the bet amount varies. The usual bet is final team standing vs. final team standing. That means that I'm betting that my final team standing will be better than the other guys. > > 10) Are there any security measures that need to be taken as far as > non-members viewing information for the website, or can anyone > access the data? I think that only the Commissioner should be able to change a roster. This prevents someone from changing their roster after a tournament begins. That is a no no. I also think that our league information should be accessible to league members only. > > Sincerely, > > Team Double Bogey > David Elia > Annie Damiano > Michael Chan > Robert Keaser
