The goal of the Life in Montana simulation was to show students what their parents' generation learned the hard way. "It's hard buying everything you need, staying in a budget," said Ashley Backman, 16. Backman was given the role of a child care worker, earning a meager $13,000 a year, married to a computer support specialist who earns more than $27,000. Despite their combined $40,000 income, they were spending too much because they decided to buy a house, said Caroline Stovall, 17. "We had to sell our dog and cat and artwork and sell our clothes," Stovall said. They also tried to save money but cutting their food back to just $100 a month each.

During high school, I would stay after practice to work with our kids program. I encourage youth coaches to invite the varsity wrestlers to work with your local kids program. When training young wrestlers, the more feedback they receive the better off they will be. The varsity wrestlers can serve as role models for the younger wrestlers and will also benefit from helping the kids. Also, encourage the youth wrestlers to attend varsity matches and vice-versa. Perhaps even develop a big brother program. Every summer during college, I ran my own day camps, worked at PennState Camps and took a team to Junior Nationals. I worked with kids in all different age groups, and these summers proved to be very beneficial and rewarding experiences for me. I enjoyed my work with the kids tremendously and saw how much the wrestlers benefited from their time on the mats. Summer is an excellent time for skill development. The kids are not busy with school and preparing for competition. The emphasis is on skill development, learning new techniques and having fun.

Our Awards In 1976, while working as a professional skating instructor in Buffalo, Elizabeth M. O'Donnell had the unique idea to teach people who were blind how to ice skate. Initial success led to the formation of the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped, Inc. (SABAH, Inc.) as a Buffalo-based not-for-profit educational corporation in 1977. Soon after its initial efforts, SABAH expanded to include children, youth, and adults with all types of disabilities. For more than 22 years, SABAH has taught 9,000 Western New Yorkers who have physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges to ice skate. This past year, locally-raised funds provided instruction to more than 800 people with disabilities, each week. SABAH provides weekly adaptive ice skating lessons, adaptive skating equipment, intense volunteer support, and the opportunity to perform in an annual skating spectacular. We are on the ice seven days a week at six sites in Erie and Niagara counties. At these sites, we serve "handi-capable" skaters from six Western New York counties. Our skaters improve their balance, coordination, endurance, and strength, learn self-discipline, and put meaning behind their and our motto, "I can do it, I can skate!" More than 30 skaters have taken their first independent steps as a direct result of their efforts in our program.

Finances and Economic Capacity The rate of obsolescence in technology is exceedingly rapid, requiring constant outlay of dollars just to keep up with changing products. While the pace is likely controlled by software and hardware companies, institutions must continue to keep up. Increasingly, technology is used for competitive advantage in today's higher education market. But the notion that technology saves money is ludicrous. There is a large technology financial gap on campuses. Funding for technology typically will have to come from third party sources, from an increase in student fees, or through a decision to mandate purchase by students. If the latter two options are exercised, it is imperative that students perceive that their investment is worthwhile.
