There are two major methods of reducing stress: preventive and combative. It is best, of course, to prevent stress, but this is not always possible. When we are already caught up in stressful situations, we should shift to promising combative methods. There are two principle preventive practices: making wise decisions to avoid unnecessary stressors and maintaining an adequate supply of energy. The stress response is a natural outcome of perceiving that our resources are inadequate for the demands we are facing. Energy is a major coping resource for, as Vince Lombardi once said to his Green Bay Packers, "Fatigue makes cowards of us all." When we are fatigued, every demand seems stressful. It is, therefore, important to build and protect our energy. We build energy largely through exercise and proper nutrition, and we protect it through adequate rest. National reports of the health habits of Americans suggest that in general we get poor marks on all three counts.
