Extractions: Genetic Engineering The professor of my Modern Genetics class often brings articles to share with the class from current news sources dealing with the creation and use of genetically modified organisms. As with most new technologies, genetic modification is not fully understood by the majority of people and has thus been the subject of many heated debates. Some groups hold the position that by modifying the genetic structure of living creatures we are treading on thin ice. Others hold that the modification of organisms through genetic manipulation is no different than the selective breeding that humans have practiced on domesticated plants and animals for thousands of years. While there are a number of risks associated with the alteration of organisms at a genetic level, there are also a number of benefits that can, with proper regulation, outweigh all of these risks. However, the techniques used differ greatly from the past techniques used to control the breeding of various organisms. Background Alteration of the Genetic Code of Bacterium To best understand the debate on this subject, background information of how the genetic engineering occurs is first needed. The techniques were first developed using plasmids, circular portions of DNA found in many bacteria. Using the restriction enzymes, researchers can cut the plasmids at specific points and insert donor DNA into the plasmid. Both the plasmid and the donor are cut so that their ends have matching codes allowing them to be spliced together. The altered plasmid, now known as a "vector" can then be inserted into a bacterial cell. The cell will then reproduce multiple copies of the vector plasmid. When the cell undergoes division the two resulting daughter cells will contain copies of the modified plasmid.
