4-0 out of 5 stars A Scholarly History of the Flute
This is strictly a scholarly history of the flute and only that, and an excellent one at that.
John

4-0 out of 5 stars Well researched and presented but lacking certain topics.
A thoughtful, thorough history of the flute.Perhaps a little too narrowly focussed, as the flute's history included relevant interactions with other woodwinds, none of which are mentioned.Does not say enough about the flute after 1960, and could use an expansion of the material on such topics as the pccolo, alto and bass flutes--this is a serious deficiency. Not quite as thoroughly referenced as other volumes in this series, but generally this meets an adequate scholarly standard. There are some formal idiosyncracies which the author accepts.Despite its weaknesses, this is the current "definitive" history of the flute.Well recommended, and not too costly! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading (But more of that in Chapter 12)
1.I love flutes.
2.I want to learn how to play the flute.
3.I am a beginner in all aspects of learning how to play a flute.

Therefore, Flute for Dummies seemed to be my destiny...

But I can't go one page without being told by the author... more on that subject in Chapter 3... Tone will be discussed in Chapter 5... I'll tell you about that in Chapter 13.It seems like the author forgot the title. I am a flute dummy therefore I don't know what you are not telling me yet; however, I am a proficient reader and understand how the table of contents and index work.

I have read four chapters and I cannot go any further.Yes I learned some basic historical information about a flute, but I am disappointed. This book had such promise, but more about that in my next review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not For Dummies
I bought Flute for Dummies strictly because it is the most current text on flute available. The author demonstrates a high level of knowledge and experience about her instrument, but the whole "dummies" concept is disingenuous and contrived. There's nothing about this book that would truly by understood by anyone other than a mature, experienced flutist, and efforts to "dummy up" to the reader are insulting.Having said that, there is plenty of useful information for flutists at any level. It is unfortunate that the author did not choose to write a more conventional text and refrain from holding back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I purchased this book for my mothers birthday/ Mothers Day and she totally loved it! Thank you so much for the awesome book and the great delivery!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Flute Tooten
An excellent book.I've taught myself to read music and play my flute.I wish I had bought this book 5 years ago.I am only on page 150 and I've already learned alot.Realy looking forward to the rest of the book.I'm learning to play to keep this old mind (73) working and learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for begineri

5-0 out of 5 stars History lesson for the silver flute
This publication presents a detailed history lesson on the silver flute and its creator. This book offers inspiration and clarification to many rarely addressed technical issues for those dedicated to the lifetime adventure of playing the flute.
In addition to the method, composition, and other insights, the copied letters, notes, and drawings throughout the book(many still in their original German, handwritten format) are an added treat.

I also like the binding and paper used in the publication. It just feels different than your usual paperback, there is a firmness and longevity in this publication that seems more solid and durable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting history of the design of the modern flute
As an engineer and a long time saxophone player who recently started learning the flute, I had many questions about why the flute was designed the way it was. This book is a translation of Boehm's notes on his life's work of transforming the old simple wooden flutes into the much more advanced modern flute. The translator did an excellent job, and includes many side notes of his own to explain more about what Boehm was talking about and to add interesting historical and technical points. Now I understand why certain notes are harder to play than others, why certain trade-offs were made, and how to play the instrument better. The result is a much simpler and more elegant design than the saxophone, and a professional instrument that you can fit in your glove box!And learning about the flute design has also helped me understand the design of the related saxophone and clarinet better.Boehm was a brilliant and dedicated inventor, craftsman and musician, so his story is both interesting and inspirational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for all flutists.
I lost my copy of this book, which I deeply regret.Boehm, as any flute player knows, invented both the key mechanism and concept of the conical, rather than cyndrilical flute. He also, in addition to being one of the finest flutists of his age, was the first to make flutes from metal, havingtrained as a goldsmith.

This book details his research into theacoustical properties of the flute, as well as the key mechanism, and whyhe felt the need to improve them.I feel that any flutist will benefitfrom an understanding of why the modern flute is as it is.

Boehm alsoincludes invaluable hints on the correct manner of playing the flute.Andwho better to do so than the man who developed it to its' current level ofperfection? His complete knowledge of the instrument is shown in thistreatise.

Overall, an indispensable book for flutists, and otherwindplayers who play on Boehm system mechanisms (eg: clarinets, oboes, bassoons, saxophones).Don't miss!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating glance into the history of modern flute
This book is a journey into the development of the modern flute by Theobold Boehm in mid-19 century. It reveals the combination of the artistic approach mixed with science, craftsmanship and persistence ofBoehm to perfect the flute to what we know today. The transition from woodto metal, the new mechanism - all are groundbreaking. Another part of thebook deals with flute playing and practicing. A must for anybody interestedin acoustics of musical instruments. After reading this book I cannot butadmire Boehm and his contribution to the world of music! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crow Flies - Soaring Falcon - Music on the Wings of a Falcon
Carlos Nakai is a gifted author who shares his knowledge in a form of cultural sharing. An educator and afficionado of Native American flute gives readers the ultimate treat - an excellent, easy to follow instructional guide for learning to play this instrument.Readers learn about how to tune, finger notes and develop performance styles as well as reading music in note form and tabluature.A section on how to care for the Native American flute is also included. His writing is as clear and direct as flies the crow. The songs, their titles and arrangements are like a soaring falcon - natural, free and beautiful. He reaches his readers as well as his musical audience.

To make a good thing even better still, Nakai includes transcriptions of his own musical creations. He follows this up with his part in Native culture and the history of this incredible instrument.

4-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative Text on Native American Flute
R. Carlos Nakai is probably the most famous and accomplished of the Native American flute players. This book is for serious players interested in investigating the subtleties of the art and for those interested in learning more about Nakai's contribution to it.Amateurs like myself will probably be lost after the first few pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars great introduction
if you have a little musical background, this book will get you going in the right direction with your native flute.when i first started playing my cedar flute, everything sounded off-key.after reading carlos nakai's introduction and learning to play his tunes from the scores in the book, i understood the intervals of the native flute and which notes sound good in what patterns.Soon i was able not only to play nakai's beautiful songs but also to improvise on my own.being able to read music is a big help but if you have that skill, this book will give you hours of fun and learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginning Players
For anyone interested in a generic understanding of the Native American FLute they may find it here. However for those who would like to learn to play and have no prior musical knowledge they will find it a discouraging study...difficult to understand without first mastering musical theory. The most valuable parts of "The Art of The Native American FLute" are the musical transcriptions of Carlos Nakai's songs written in flute tablature. They are though beneficial only for the advanced player that can read.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Syrinx for solo flute, was written by French composer Claude Debussy in 1913. It is commonly considered to be an indispensable part of any flutist's repertoire. Historians believe that "Syrinx", a work that gives gives the performer generous room for interpretation, played a pivotal role in the development of solo flute music in the early twentieth century. "Syrinx" was originally written by Debussy without any barlines or breath marks. Flutist Marcel Moyse later added these, and they are included in this edition.

"Syrinx" was written as incidental music to the uncompleted play Psyché by Gabriel Mourey. It was intended to be performed offstage during the play, and was originally called "Flûte de Pan". Since one of Debussy's Chansons de Bilitis had already been given that title, it was given its final name in reference to the myth of the amorous pursuit of the nymph Syrinx by the god Pan.

The piece is dedicated to the flutist Louis Fleury and is performed here by Nicole Chamberlain.

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for non-electronic bassoons, clarinets, English horns, flutes, oboes, pan flutes, piccolos, recorders, saxophones, and other woodwind musical instruments across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for non-electronic bassoons, clarinets, English horns, flutes, oboes, pan flutes, piccolos, recorders, saxophones, and other woodwind musical instruments. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more
