4-0 out of 5 stars A must read while preparing for this test!
This book provides the reader a chapter by chapter review of the topics to be covered on the test. Many of the basic theories are covered by the authors of this guide. The practice tests are very useful and allows the individual to emphasize the weak points from the pretest.

While certainly not providing a solution for all items to be covered, this brings many major areas to the forefront. A simple read of this book will probably not help. A highlighter, notes and index cards for perusing the chapters will be most beneficial while preparing for this state test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful at all
I read the book more than twice and I did not pass the test successfuly. Fortunately, I found another book with more information. I did pass the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
This book does an excellent job of explaining the competencies and the two tests at the end of the book were right on!I liked the fact that there were explanations of the correct practice exam answers so that the reader could understand why the answer was correct. I also liked that the book applies the behavioral theories to actual classroom scenarios so the reader could see the theories in action.Other teachers who took this same exam without using this study guide failed (a few times) but I passed on the first try and I believe this book was the reason.I would definitely recommend this book!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book does not reflectchanges made in the summer of 2003
Please note that the changes to the FTCE made in the summer of 2003 are not reflected in book. It is also available as an e-book.

4-0 out of 5 stars You'll need this book...
This book is a valuable tool for those taking the FTCE.It reviews every competency you'll need to know for this exam, including a neat summary of the basic psychological theories at the beginning of the book. I took this exam in 1998 without any prep book like this available and I did pass the exam. This book tells you the pass score needed. At the outset I was thrown by the questions, but the strategy I adapted apparently payed off.Going in, all I had to prepare me was the skimpy test booklet provided by the State of Florida certification division. But if you're really serious about getting through this exam at the first go, then this book is a must. I am now using this book as a tutoring aid when I coach others for this rather quirky exam. One quick hint for test-takers: this particular exam's questions are best answered by the process of elimination.Good luck! ... Product Description
This study guide targets teacher competencies and skills for Emotionally Handicapped. You read four years worth of material between the covers of one study guide. Regardless if your test is multiple choice or essay format you will have ample material to reflect upon to do well on these formats. The majority of XAM study guides have 125 question multiple choice sample tests. The questions are medium to hard in difficulty but reasonable for a trained teacher candidate to answer. Since the questions do highly resemble the real test we are frequently asked if they are former tests. They are not. If any question from our book appears on the test it would be a coincidence. XAM Publishing, Inc. has e-mail support at winwin1111@aol.com. XAM staff welcomes your updates and values your input. Each year a new version of the study guide is released so you may have the best in educational research. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars gets the job done, but not the best edited book written
Wow, what can I say about this prep. guide?Well, two things.1. It is a necessary evil in order to pass the exam.2. I've never seen so many mistakes in spelling in a book before. The guide did help me pass the ESE exam that I initially failedw without the guide. But where does our 40 bucks go?Not to editors and spell checkers, that's for sure.I also found at least 2 answers of the practice test where actually wrong themselves, a scary thought, but I passed.

1-0 out of 5 stars False and misleading title!!
This book, while titled and marketed as a study guide for the ESE test, appears to be the study guide for the old Emotionally Handicapped FTCE test (no longer used) with a new cover. In fact, the table of contents pages as well as the title page all indicate that the book is for the "Emotionally Handicapped" test.

Furthermore, I was disturbed to see misspellings, unfinished sentences, and poor grammar. This should NEVER happen in any publication sold to the public, but especially it shouldn't happen in a TEACHERS' STUDY GUIDE that cost $30!!

And finally, the title page promised a bibliography and sources were cited throughout the book. There was no bibliography included, however; and therefore no way to find the full citations for the sources mentioned.

I believe it is false advertising to market this book as a study guide for the ESE test when it so clearly is a study guide for the EH test with a new cover. ... Read more

Book Description

A remarkably honest political biography

"In this exceptionally well-told memoir, distinguished by clarity, poignancy, and humor, Buddy MacKay illuminates much that was known and not known about three decades of the history to which he contributed hugely as a Florida legislator, member of Congress, and lieutenant governor to the late Lawton Chiles."--Martin A. Dyckman, author of Floridian of His Century: The Courage of Governor LeRoy Collins

When Florida governor Lawton Chiles died unexpectedly on December 12, 1998, less than one month before Jeb Bush was to assume the office, it was left to Chiles's lieutenant governor, Buddy MacKay, to step in for twenty-three days and run the state. "I take no great pleasure in this," MacKay stated at his initial news conference, with good reason. Roughly one month prior, he had lost a brutal gubernatorial campaign as the Democratic nominee to Bush, meaning he now had to officiate over the investiture of a political opponent.

This is Kenneth "Buddy" MacKay's memoir of three decades of public life in Florida. It recaptures, in riveting detail, a time which saw Florida grow from a semi-rural to a mega-state, where political dominance shifted from the left to the right.

How Florida Happened, MacKay's first book, details his experiences in and influences upon Florida and national politics. As an officeholder in the Florida Legislature, the United States Congress, and at the highest levels of the executive branch of state government, he was a much sought-after source, frequently quoted by members of the press because of his ability to explain issues and enlighten the public in short, easily-understandable terms. His particularly keen eye and ear for the ironies and absurdities in government and politics as well as his brutal honesty come through in this welcome and wonderful memoir.

An inaugural volume in the series Florida Government and Politics, edited by David Colburn and Susan MacManus

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy MacKay: Gives Politics a Good Name
Buddy MacKay's long career serving Marion County, north central Florida, the State of Florida, and our nation is a career widely recognized as the gold standard for public service. This memoir shows us Buddy's skills and talents that are woefully lacking in our current political universe.

A man of keen intellect and rock-solid ethics, Buddy applied those qualities to every minute of his public service. Any one who reveres the tradition of exemplary public servants like Rueben Askew, Lawton Chiles, Bob Graham and others will want to read this memoir of Florida politics in the last half of the 20th century.

Every vote I cast for Buddy MacKay was a privilege and pleasure. In fact, I would be at the polls when they opened so I could cast my vote as early as possible. Further, when I read about the release of this book in my early morning survey of state newspapers, I woke up my wife with an exultant 5 a.m. announcement that "Buddy MacKay has a memoir and I just ordered it!" The only other pronouncemt like that I would dare make might be a Beatles reunion.

Buddy, thanks for completing this reflection on our the ins and outs of our great state. Friends, do not miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars "How Florida Happened" - an excellent political history of a Florida Statesman
How Florida Happened is true Florida history from the heart of a Florida Statesman. This book covers the most true feeling that can come from the heart of a man that loves his State. It not only portrays the seriousness of some bare knuckles politics, but also the kindness of a man of Faith. The Education of Governor Buddy Mackay will keep you on the edge of your seat and even if your style is not one of a politico you will enjoy the history of how our State changed so greatly in so few years.Having lived in rural Florida I watch first hand as much of these changes have taken place.I highly recommend "How Florida Happened" and I am sure any Floridian will find it very interesting. ... Product Description
There were in Florida, October 1, 1880, of the Indians commonly known as Seminole, two hundred and eight. They constituted thirty-seven families, living in twenty-two camps, which were gathered into five widely separated groups or settlements. These settlements, from the most prominent natural features connected with them, I have named, (1) The Big Cypress Swamp settlement; (2) Miami River settlement; (3) Fish Eating Creek settlement; (4) Cow Creek settlement; and (5) Cat Fish Lake settlement. Their locations are, severally: The first, in Monroe County, in what is called the "Devil's Garden," on the northwestern edge of the Big Cypress Swamp, from fifteen to twenty miles southwest of Lake Okeechobee; the second, in Dade County, on the Little Miami River, not far from Biscayne Bay, and about ten miles north of the site of what was, during the great Seminole war, Fort Dallas; the third, in Manatee County, on a creek which empties from the west into Lake Okeechobee, probably five miles from its mouth; the fourth, in Brevard County, on a stream running southward, at a point about fifteen miles northeast of the entrance of the Kissimmee River into Lake Okeechobee; and the fifth, on a small lake in Polk County, lying nearly midway between lakes Pierce and Rosalie, towards the headwaters of the Kissimmee River. The settlements are from forty to seventy miles apart, in an otherwise almost uninhabited region, which is in area about sixty by one hundred and eighty miles. The camps of which each settlement is composed lie at distances from one another varying from a half mile to two or more miles. In tabular form the population of the settlements appears as follows:

_a_ One mixed blood. _b_ One black.

Males under 10 years of age 21 Males between 10 and 20 years of age 45 Males between 20 and 60 years of age 38 Males over 60 years of age 8 -- 112 Females under 10 years of age 23 Females between 10 and 20 years of age 18 Females between 20 and 60 years of age 46 Females over 60 years of age 9 -- 96 --- 208

In this table it will be noticed that the total population consists of 112 males and 96 females, an excess of males over females of 16. This excess appears in each of the settlements, excepting that of Fish Eating Creek, a fact the more noteworthy, from its relation to the future of the tribe, since polygamous, or certainly duogamous, marriage generally prevails as a tribal custom, at least at the Miami River and the Cat Fish Lake settlements.
