Product Description
Early work in artificial intelligence was mainly concerned with general problem-solving procedures. The application of these procedures to large "real world" problems was at first unsuccessful.Major progress was later made by allowing the problem-solving process to make use of separate, explicit sources of knowledge, concerning highly specific problem domains. This gave rise to a first generation of expert knowledge-based systems. The next step was to improve the power and flexibility of the various knowledge-processing techniques and to develop effective software and hardware architectures to implement them efficiently. This major challenge remains at the core of many of the "fifth-generation" computer projects. ... Product Description
This volume collects the invited presentations of a NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on "Expert Judgment and Expert Systems", held in Porto, Portugal, August 1986. The Workshop brought together researchers from the fields of psychology, decision analysis, and artificial intelligence. The purposes were to assess similarities, differences, and complementarities among the three approaches to the study of expert judgment; to evaluate their relative strengths and weaknesses; and to propose profitable linkages between them. Each of the papers in the present volume is directed toward one or more of these goals. ... Read more

Product Description
The selection of the proper materials for a structural component is a critical activity that is governed by many, often conflicting, factors. Incorporating materials expert systems into CAD/CAM operations could assist designers by suggesting potential manufacturing processes for particular products to facilitate concurrent engineering, recommending various materials for a specific part based on a given set of characteristics, or proposing possible modifications of a design if suitable materials for a particular part do not exist.Computer-Aided Materials Selection during Structural Design reviews the structural design process, determines the elements and capabilities required for a materials selection expert system to assist design engineers, and recommends the areas of expert system and materials modeling research and development required to devise a materials-specific design system. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Knowledge engineering (KE) was defined in 1983 by EdwardFeigenbaum, and Pamela McCorduck as follows: KE is anengineering discipline that involves integrating knowledgeinto computer systems in order to solve complex problemsnormally requiring a high level of human expertise.Atpresent, it refers to the building, maintaining anddevelopment of knowledge-based systems. It has a great dealin common with software engineering, and is used in manycomputer science domains such as artificial intelligence, including databases, data mining, expert systems, decisionsupport systems and geographic information systems.Knowledge engineering is also related to mathematical logic,as well as strongly involved in cognitive science and socio- cognitive engineering where the knowledge is produced bysocio-cognitive aggregates (mainly humans) and is structuredaccording to our understanding of how human reasoning andlogic works. ... Description:
With the advancement of Web technology, hypermedia learning systems are becoming more widespread in educational settings. Hypermedia learning systems present course content with non-sequential formats, so students are required to develop learning paths by themselves. Yet, empirical evidence indicates that not all students can benefit from hypermedia learning. Research into individual differences suggests that prior knowledge has significant effects on student learning in hypermedia systems, with experts and novices showing different preferences to the use of hypermedia learning systems and requiring different levels of navigation support. It is therefore essential to develop a mechanism to help designers understand the needs of experts and novices. To address this issue, this paper presents a framework to illustrate the needs of students with different levels of prior knowledge by analyzing the findings of previous research. The overall aim of this framework is to integrate students' prior knowledge into the design of hypermedia learning systems. Finally, implications for the design of hypermedia learning systems are discussed. ... Read more
