Product Description

Money is important.Money is a catalyst.Money makes things happen.

Am I right? What is more powerful than money? Love? Food? Not a chance: With cash in hand, one can simply order out. For both.

I grew up in the 1980s, so I take the utmost pride in having lived in what I honestly believe to be the greatest decade of the twentieth century. Why? From the Police to Perestroika, the `80s had it all. It's obvious that as a generation, most of our feelings about money were formed at a time when Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, Michael Milken, and Yuppie culture reigned supreme.

Enter the `90s--and once again the stock market is booming. Now older, most of us have amassed some cash for the very first time. You want to get in on the action, but haven't got a clue where to start. More than anything, you are unique--the last thing you need is a middle-aged money manager telling you where to stow your stash.

So here's the deal: I'm twenty-three years old, obsessed with money and the stock market, a radio talk-show host, and a commodities trader. I've made money in everything from mutual funds to stocks--even options and futures. I've penned this little...shall we say, manifesto, for those of you out there who want something more out of life then two-for-one night at the Toss `n Sauce. Greed Is Good will tell you everything you need to know about the major financial "products" out there: from mutual funds to money markets, even the sexy stuff like options and futures.

Money is important, but I think this book makes an oftentimes dry subject a mite more palatable. I had to sit through the boring stuff, no reason you should too. Bottom line? This book is a practical but punchy ride through the money maze. And if I found my way out--so can you.Amazon.com Review
Greed, in Jonathan Hoenig's estimation, is passion. It'slust. It has nothing to do with single-minded accumulation andeverything to do with freedom, with the ability to pursue the thingsthat make you happy. Hoenig received his first real introduction togreed while working at Starbucks as a teenager. He found that themoney he earned after buying a few shares of Starbucks stock greatlyexceeded what he made as an after-school wage slave. While in college,he started a radio show called Capitalist Pig, which now playsin 18 states. Greed has been good to Hoenig.

In Greed Is Good, he wants to share the wealth with hispost-baby-boom generation by preaching the gospel of investing. Butinvesting isn't just about choosing mutual fund A over mutual fundB. It's about not spending money on useless stuff, leaving more moneyfor the things that are meaningful. Hoenig understands how frills likedesigner clothes, CDs, and, yes, Starbucks coffee can seem likenecessities, when really they're lifestyle add-ons that can beeliminated. Doing without such excesses can be painful, but that'ssomething else Hoenig believes in; not only is greed good, so isdiscipline, sacrifice, and self-denial. Greed is written in aneclectic style that includes Yiddish phrases, street slang, andgenerational cultural references ("Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?"),which serves two purposes: it's very entertaining to read, and rendersthe often-dry message of "Save and invest" infinitely morepalatable. --Lou Schuler ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for newbie investors
"Greed is Good" is an excellent book for beginner's to the trading arena.I would recommend this as a first book although it's not thorough enough to encompass all that one needs to know to start trading.

Especially if you are considering trading options, I would recommend getting a comprehensive book on the subject.Hoenig's information on options and futures is way too general to be of much use to the beginnner.

What I got from this book was useful web links to investment information and good recommendations on books to further your investment education.

Hoenig also offers valuable advice on money management tactics that even advanced traders will find useful.

Now that Amazon no longer offers this book for sale, I wouldn't pay anymore than $20 on the secondary market. As of this writing there is one secondary marketplace seller selling this book for over $175.Ridiculous is all I can say about that!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative, but...
I regret that it took me until my mid-30s to get interested in money and finance; I regret more that it took me until my early 40s to feel like I actually had money to invest. If I'd been smarter--or if, perhaps, I'd had this book--when I was younger, maybe I wouldn't be playing catch-up now. With this book (and/or with others like it), I hope to give my son the financial education I never got. This one, of course, will have to wait until he's in his teens.

Hoenig gives a good overview of the stock market and its related "instruments." Puts and calls still give me trouble, but he clarified limit orders for me. The book is both informative and entertaining, and Hoenig definitely conveys his passion for the subject. Of course the pop culture references are dated, but who doesn't love some '80s nostalgia?

My major gripe: typos. Hoenig appears to have a problem distinguishing between "then" and "than." I took to reading the book with a pen in hand; I think I corrected at least one typo per page. Was the proofreader on vacation that week? That aside, I will keep this in my collection for my son. Maybe by the time he's old enough to appreciate it, he'll find the 20th century pop culture references quaint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invest in the knowledge of a young Buffett
If you were born in the 80's and want to get into investing, then this book is for you.Mr. Hoenig brings life and funny irreverence to the very dry subject of investing that the "twenty-something" in all of us can appreciate. This book covers everything from basic saving to options and futures. The prose of this book is in everyday language and is easy to understand; any technical terms that are given are explained and/or defined in the running text or the margins. There are also definitions and cultural anecdotes, as well as a few Yiddish words (with definitions), throughout the chapters for your added enjoyment.Hoenig's underlying theme, though, is discipline.Know that Jonathan Hoenig is one of today's youngest master investors who runs his own hedge fund (Capitalistpig LLC).To actually witness his mind at work, tune in to Fox News on Saturday at 11:30 am.He is always a featured analyst on the show "Cashin' In."

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time
Somebody recommended this book to me. I read it. The idea is good however the author is far from understanding the principles of math (one would argue about understanding economics which is half social half science). There are many wrong calculations. I tried to contact Mr. Hoenig as I am from Chicago, too. Left several messages, sent e-mails with disagreement - no response.
I don't recommend the book. It's a waste of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I'd be compelled to give this book 3 stars, but due to the comprehensive information on options on futures, I choice to give it four stars. This is a great book, but it's simple, conversational style can get annoying and there can be too much substance at times to follow (sidebars, quotes, etc.). This is a good book by an up-and-coming hedge fund manager (Jonathan Hoenig). While I don't know if it would be good for kids to read, it definitely is a great book for adults who are intermediately knowledgeable about the financial markets, as it explains terms and operations in a simple, easy to understand mannerism. ... Product Description
If the twentieth century was the American century, then the twenty-first century belongs to China. Now the one and only Jim Rogers shows how any investor can get in on the ground floor of “the greatest economic boom since England’s Industrial Revolution.”

In this indispensable new book, one of the world’s most successful investors, Jim Rogers, brings his unerring investment acumen to bear on this huge and unruly land now being opened to the world and exploding in potential.

Rogers didn’t just wake up a Sinophile yesterday. He’s been tracking the Chinese economy since he first went to China in 1984 in preparation for his round-the-world motorcycle trip and then again, later, when he saw Shanghai’s newly reopened stock exchange (which looked like an OTB office). In the decades that followed–especially in recent years, with the easing of Communist party financial dictates–the facts speak for themselves:

• The Chinese economy’s growth rate has averaged 9 percent since the start of the 1980s.
• China’s savings rate is over 35 percent (in America, it’s 2 percent).
• 40 percent of China’s output goes to exports (so there’s no crippling foreign debt).
• $60 billion a year in direct foreign investment, combined with a trade surplus, has brought Beijing’s foreign currency reserves to over $1 trillion.
• China’s fixed assets–ports, bridges, and roads–double every two and a half years.

In short, if projections hold, China will surpass the United States as the world’s largest economy in as little as twenty years. But the time to act is now. In A Bull in China, you’ll learn what industries offer the newest and best opportunities, from power, energy, and agriculture to tourism, water, and infrastructure. In his trademark down-to-earth style, Rogers demystifies the state policies that are driving earnings and innovation, takes the intimidation factor out of the A-shares, B-shares, and ADRs of Chinese offerings, and encourages any reader to trust his or her own expertise (if you’re a car mechanic, check out their auto industry).

A Bull in China also features fascinating profiles of “Red Chip” companies, such as Yantu Changyu, China’s largest winemaker, which sells a “Healthy Liquor” line mixed with herbal medicines. Plus, if you want to export something to China yourself–or even buy land there–Rogers tells you the steps you need to take.

No other book–and no other author–can better help you benefit from the new Chinese revolution. Jim Rogers shows you how to make the “amazing energy, potential, and entrepreneurial spirit of a billion people” work for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your such a Bull

The moment I got hold of this book, really I cant put it down.

Jim Rogers, "A Bull China", awakened my child's dream of seeing The Great Wall of China and China itself.

I couldn't believed reading such wonderful things about China from an american whose views and words you will really believe as he indeed doesnot speak of China to sell his book. The man surely knows by heart what he had written.

Indeed I talked to my chinese friend whose in Beijing and shared to him about this book.

I can't wait to invest in China.

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting outdated
Here's the problem: This book was published in 2007, meaning largely researched in 2006, and I read it in 2010. That's an eternity in China investing. I read it all the way through for a broad brush understanding, but information on individual stocks is grossly out of date. He also tends to concentrate on the large caps, while my interest is on the little independent companies. If you are investing in China it's worth scanning, but it's no bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Industry analysis of Chinese stocks
I finished this book within one week. Pretty interesting and readable book. As always Rogers explained the truth in plain English with his acumen eyes. He knows more about China than me although I was born and grew up in China.

However this book provides a watch list instead of hot stock list.

3-0 out of 5 stars TEXT-TO-SPEECH DISABLED = NO SALE
I enjoyed reading the first few pages of the sample on my Kindle and was about to purchase the book, then discovered (when I tried to play it in my car while driving) that TEXT-TO-SPEECH HAS BEEN DISABLED for this Kindle book. I would have given Mr. Rogers a few more dollars to add to his fortune, but TEXT-TO-SPEECH DISABLED = NO SALE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heres where you start
If ever you want to get started in investing this is the book for you.Jim gets straight to the point and draws on his wealth of knowledge and experience of travel to hit home the fundamentals you need when investing.
It certaninly opened my eyes to the potential in china.

Product Description
This is a new volume in the successful and long-running "CEA Series". The Asian Economy with one common Asian Money is a frontier topic of study in supranational macroeconomics. If the Europeanization of Europe has become a historic reality, the Asianization of Asia cannot be far behind. The paradigm of the European Union (EU) has become a learning model for other continents, especially Asia. In Asia, the process was initiated following the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98, when several newly industrialized Asian economies suffered negative rates of growth of gross domestic product (GDP).The three (Japan, China, and Korea) plus five (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines) came together to became the core members of a new regional group. Their annual meetings became an institutional feature of Asian economic cooperation and regional economic integration. In 2003, the group expanded to become the four (Japan, China, Korea, and India) plus 10 model (the original five plus Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei Darussalam, and Viet Nam). The book examines the prospects of, the justification for, and the implications of the development of a common Asian currency. ... Read more

Product Description
Transactions in land and other real property differ between countries throughout Europe. The transaction procedures reflect formal rules, but they are also normalized through conventions and professional codes of conduct. This complex of technical, legal and economic issues was investigated from the point of view of transaction economics through an ESF-COST supported Action G9 Modeling Real Property Transactions. The research was performed between 2001 and 2005 by researchers mainly from university departments related to land surveying, real estate management, geo-information sciences and knowledge engineering. This book represents the final outcome of that study. A modeling approach was elaborated and tested on a number of countries (especially Sweden and Slovenia, for which the models are shown in this book in the Unified Modeling Language (UML)). The modeling approach leads to transparency and allows comparison. Nevertheless, the influence of the national and social contexts, and the different perspectives that can be taken, prevent a simple ranking of the studied procedures. For those planning or comparing transaction procedures or parts thereof, the book supplies a tested approach and methodology. But the book eventually warns of simplification in this field full of complex national institutional arrangements.

Product Description
An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a basket of stocks that trades on an exchange with the same simplicity and liquidity of an individual stock. In this book, money manager Deron Wagner introduces the major types and families of ETFs and then provides step-by-step guidance to picking and trading funds. Unlike other books on ETFs, Wagner's strategies are based on technical analysis, a method of timing the market that greatly improves an investor's chances of predicting short and intermediate term ETF trends. Wagner's comprehensive catalog of the ETFs now available, his insights into successful trading techniques, and his solid research and informative examples, will be an invaluable resource for everyone trying to come up to speed on this new investment opportunity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Trading ETFs by Daren Wagner
This is the best book I have read on the subject and is the second book I have read by Wagner.Wagner's other book, "Sector Trading Strategies", was good but "Trading ETFs" was excellent. He has an excellent understanding of these markets and it is presented in an organized and well thought out manner. However, it is a lot of material and can be read several times, getting more out of it each time it is read.I look foward to reading any other books that he may write.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book fulled of information on ETFs
This is the book I am looking for to get me understanding the ETFs and how to trade them. Very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
Great book for people that are about to start trading for the 1st time... a must buy...

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money.
I was expecting this to be a useful learning tool, but it wasn't.The broad outlines of the approach is sound, but the methods the author suggests are cumbersome, at best.Look elsewhere.Want to buy a used copy from me?

5-0 out of 5 stars Wagner cooks up a delightful winning recipe for trading ETFs
Mr. Wagner cooks up a delightful winning recipe with a clear exposition of ETFs marinated with a perfect blend of technical indicators. This book would satisfy the most discriminating palates of readers interested in trading any securities, not just ETFs, as long as they are open to understanding and using Technical Analysis.

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) look and feel like mutual funds but trade like individual stocks. Since ETFs are synthetic instruments (made up of several underlying stocks or indexes) their average daily volume is largely irrelevant in determining their price and liquidity. Wagner provides a `logical step-by-step process that enables the reader to easily master ETF trading using technical analysis'.

In Chapter 1, Wagner gives an excellent review of the history and growth of ETFs. I agree with Mr. Wagner that `the beauty of his top-down strategy in selecting and trading ETFs lies in its simplicity.' First determine the broad market trend (up or down). Second, find the indexes with the most relative strength. Third, find the ETF with the most relative strength for the promising index. Fourth, determine the Long/Short position for the selected ETF that is likely to out-perform the market. Fifth and last, determine the entry timing most likely to out-perform the market.

Wagner cautions that his terminology `Relative Strength' is not the same as the standard RSI (Relative Strength Indicator). Since Wagner compares how one index or ETF acts in relation to the broad market, `Proportional Strength' may be a more appropriate terminology instead of Relative Strength, with the added benefit of avoiding any possible confusion with RSI.

Wagner's discussion on `Analyzing Volume' is interesting but leaves me a bit unsure, perhaps due to my naivete. Wagner asserts that volume is a leading indicator but does not seem to distinguish between volume causing price to rise vs. volume causing price to fall. I have found that OBV (On Balance Volume, developed by Joseph Granville) is an useful indicator to gauge the strength of a market. If price closes up, the current bar's volume is added to OBV, and if price closes down, it is subtracted. Thus OBV is an indicator that depicts the flow of volume into and out of a security. It either confirms the quality of the current trend or warns of an impending reversal. I am eager to be convinced that Volume is a leading indicator; perhaps Mr. Wagner would elucidate this in a future edition of his book so a reader like myself would be convinced.

Wagner's discussion on `Supplementing the Basics' has a brief but interesting reference to Inverse Sector Relationships: If institutional money flows into one sector (as determined by Relative strength and volume) then it must be flowing out of another sector. This can be useful in selecting sectors for long and short trades. Regarding Fibonacci price retracement, Wagner's discussion is a bit sketchy. Wagner could have referenced other authors (such as Constance Brown ) who despite dwelling on the almost mystical power behind the powerful Fibonacci ratios, provide an excellent treatment of the subject for stock market analysis.

While discussing strategies for entry, Wagner elucidates `overhead supply' in crystal clear terms, observes how Market Makers and specialists go for `stop hunts' to scoop up shares at the best price, and educates novice traders why buying ETFs at new highs is worth considering.

Wagner's discussion of strategies for exit includes the most concise and clear elucidation of Resistances to check. Wagner asks: Are the 20-day and 50-day MA's overhead? Is there Fibonacci resistance (50% and 61.8%)? Is there Trendline resistance? What about prior highs that have formed horizontal price resistance? Moreover, look for resistance levels in different time frames: 60-minute, daily, and weekly charts. In addition, pay attention to the length of consolidation that marked the prior high ( the `thickness' of Resistance). While many of Wagner's observations are useful, this one is worth its weight in Gold: `Once I began using trailing stops, my profitability shot through the roof `. He even gives pointers on how not to fall prey to `stop hunts' by specialists and market makers.

Wagner illustrates the lessons he is trying to impart to the reader with Ten long and Ten short ETF trades.
Most authors would have stopped here; but Wagner excels himself by adding a chapter on `Tailoring Your Approach' and another on`Additional Pointers'. These final chapters are strewn with several useful ideas even the average reader can benefit from.

In conclusion, this book (although titled `Trading ETFs') will benefit immensely traders of any securities, not just ETFs, as long as they are open to understanding and using Technical Analysis.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is more than just about Wall Street
This book is more than just understanding Wall Street. It explains the history of Wall Street and how stocks are bought and sold, but it also teaches readers how to invest in the stock market. This book was originally written in 1978 and had several revisions. Some of the information is a bit outdated, specifically when it comes to the Internet. For example, the author teaches investors how to read tables in the newspaper. I am not sure how many investors are actually looking at the newspapers to read stock tables. I am not.

The author also includes a chapter on bonds, preferred stocks, and the money market. He realizes that some individuals such as widows have different financial goals than someone who is just starting a family. Bonds, for example, provide more current income than stocks do. I found this book easy to read with good advice.

And, the details of that journey are just the first few pages of the Jeffrey B. Little and Lucien Rhodes classic, Understanding Wall Street.

As an investor, if you want to find out how to identify the next Apple, Microsoft or Google, then the rest of Understanding Wall Street is definitely for you. Throughout the rest of the book, Little and Rhodes fill in many more details and make the complex ideas behind financial markets, financial analysis, investment choices, and investment vehicles accessible. In everyday language, they cover basic investment concepts and theories at an introductory level, yet they are also complete enough and concise enough for anyone to read and get a thorough, top down, view of Wall Street. It may very well be the perfect book for someone looking to build a solid understanding from which to start investing.

In the late 80's, as a neophyte investor, I picked up more than I imagined I would from Understanding Wall Street.

In the late 90's, as an industry professional, I frequently turned through the pages of my tattered old 3rd edition for a great review from time to time.

Today, as an adjunct professor, I am still amazed at the book's scope and ease of understanding. And, I find myself recommending Understanding Wall Street before, during, and after it's apparent that 50lb text books don't always carry their weight.

The book's newest edition is nearly 40 percent updated with revised and new material. It includes two new chapters, strategies to uncover valuable investment opportunities on the internet, and an analysis and explanation of our most recent bear market.

If you have the slightest desire to learn about the world of investing, Understanding Wall Street just may be your best initial investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Manual To Clear The Waters of Understanding.
Jeffrey Little and Lucien Rhodes' treatise "Understanding Wall Street" is a very valuable guide for the neophyte desiring the critical knowledge of how the financial nerve center of North America operates.

Rich with historical insight, this guide details the origins and subsequent transformation of some of the world's most prominent stock exchanges located on the street synonymous with wealth and power: Wall Street.

To that end the guide is easily readable and understandable.Complete with examples, explanations, and a comprehensive glossary I found the guide to complete and fill a hole in the much needed understanding of the financial facet of comparative government and civic theory studies.

I rate the text at five stars for providing a lot of information at only 300 pages. This review refers to the 2004 Fourth Edition.

Editorial Review

Product Description
"This book takes the reader on an insider's tour of the psychology of stock market investing. In more than 3,000 hours of interviews and observations, Smith granted some of the most famous insiders on Wall Street the protection of anonymity to procure their deepest and most frank views on the operation of the market. Their words are heard here in vivid and often surprising detail. What emerges is a startling portrait of how the prejudices of six different types of players fundamentalists, insiders, cyclists, traders, efficient market believers, and transformational idea adherents influence the ups and downs of the market. Smith explains how new trends, such as computer trading and mutual and retirement fund investing, interact with these psychologies drawing a remarkable picture of how market behavior is inherently more human than technical." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars It is a useless book
I lost myself after reading this book. It is definately useless book to me. I regret I bought it which was purely based on the 5 stars review. I don't even know if the writer really understand the market. I think the author wrote this one purely because he wants to creat a book. I doubt if the author knows what he wrote. This book will waste our money and time.
