1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE !!!!
The bookreceived was the opposite of what was described. Book was described to have a "Good" condition, but when the order arrived, the book was completely destroyed. Pages were ripped, markings were written all over the place, cover was bent completely, I mean, this is not a book in a "Good" condition. Wish I can get a refund and find myself another book, but i really needed it for school. Overall, I do not recommend this service to anyone. If you do buy something from here, BEWARE, you might get ripped off!!!

I was really impressed with my order and the process that Amazon utilizes to get their customers the products that they order. This is not my first expdrience with order College books from Amazon and I plan to order plenty more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service!
The person from whom I purchased this book was great! She sent the book to me promptly and I received in it great condition as she stated it would be. I would definately order from this person again!

The book itself was a required purchase for a class I am currently taking. While it contains some very interesting literary pieces, the layout is very drab, containing minimal illustration and, with the exception of a small section in the middle of the book, is completely black and white. I would have expected a more vividly illustrated textbook for literature.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boz
I am happy with the product. Even though it was a used book, it was complete without any pages missing or significant damage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Perfect for University of Phoenix

The pages are thin so using the Super Sticky Post-it notes ripped one of the pages upon removal. Overall I have been happy with this product. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good in pieces.
This book is great in what it advertises: very short, diverse writing samples. However, as a complete text for a class, it's not comprehesive or cohesive enough to be used alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars ENGLISH COMP CLASSES-WHAT ARE U GONNA DO?
I HAVE USED PROBABLY 30 DIFFERENT FRESHMEN COMP. CLASSES AND DEVELOPMENTAL WRITING. UNTIL I DISCOVERED THIS BOOK ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO, MY CLASSES ARE MUCH MORE LIVELY, AND QUIET STUDENTS SYDDENLY SPEAK OUT ABOUT SECTIONS OF THE TEXT THAT THEY DON'T AGREE WITH.

GREAT DIVERSE SECTIONS TO COVER IN CLASSROOM TALKS.

IF INTERESTED, I CAN SEND COLLEGE ENGLISH TEACHERS MY COURSE SYLLABI USING "SHORT TAKES."

3-0 out of 5 stars short takes
As a student using this book as a text in class I find it most helpful and interesting. Not only does it vary in topic, but it also gives you insight on new methods of interesting writing. Antoher plus is the length of eachstory with makes for easy reading. It really does live up to its name shorttakes.

1-0 out of 5 stars a fine freshman composition text that costs too much
It is sad that this book--and the comprable "Short Prose Reader" from McGraw-Hill--are seriously compromised by the greed of a publisher that prices a book in its 8th edition that could be marketed profitably forless than ten dollars and prices it out of the range of poor students. ... Read more

Product Description
An outstanding collection of brief essays providing high-interest models of the rhetorical modes, along with beautifully written instruction that demonstrates its own lessons about good writing. The Norton Sampler is a rhetorically arranged short-essay reader that provides models and guidelines for writing description, narration, and all the other modes of discourse. The readings are brief, reflecting the length of the essays students are required to write.

From classic texts by writers such as Annie Dillard and E. B. White, to contemporary texts from writers like Barack Obama and Marjorie Agosín, The Norton Sampler includes a range of readings that will delight teachers and engage students. Texts from a range of everyday media—from billboards to coffee mugs—demonstrate that the rhetorical modes play an important role in all the writing and reading that we do.

Now with enough writing instruction that students will not need a separate rhetoric. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what was needed
Book was needed for my college attending son's class.Works great for him and I got to pay less than what the bookstore charged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caught Me By Surprise
I bought The Norton Sampler for an English 101 course at a community college. Amazon's price was the same as a used edition from my college bookstore, so I opted for the new version. I usually don't mind reading textbooks for classes, but I liked this one enough that I have read it purely for enjoyment.

The first two essays by Annie Dillard were a perfect introduction; it was helpful to read her final essay as well as the story behind it. I truly learned by example, as is the book's intention, and Dillard's vivid details covering inspiration, writing, and editing set the tone for the rest of the book. I did not enjoy every essay as much as the first two, but the variety of samples presented gave me a good idea of why I liked certain ones. Some essays are written by students, others by famous authors, and the essays are grouped together by type. An essay by Isaac Asimov is featured in the Definition category; one by David Sedaris is grouped with Compare and Contrast essays. Each category has a small section defining the type of essay which include example writing assignments and common applications for the essay type. The author, Thomas Cooley, includes a short intro for each essay and several questions, some for discussion, some for writing. The questions were often thought-provoking and covered the philosophical to the grammatical.I questioned my feelings towards the opinions stated in the essays and also why certain words or phrases were used. I recommend this book to anyone that usually enjoys anthologies, short stories, or essays, not just students and teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
This book was required for my English class and I did not want to pay the high prices the school book store sold it at. Amazon was much cheaper and the book arrived on time and in mint condition

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
I really enjoyed most of the essays in this book. It was a good samples and groups them according to the type of essay they are. I would love to even have it explain why some of those essays are the type they are as i had a hard time with some of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars School Book
A collection of essays assembled by type and style of writing.
The book instruvts how to write common essay types by presenting the reader with a few examples of each kind. The cool part is the commentary by the authors of some of the essays as to what they were thinking when they wrote them and how they went about the writing process.

Product Description

Composition in the University examines the required introductory course in composition within American colleges and universities. Crowley argues that due to its association with literary studies in English departments, composition instruction has been inappropriately influenced by humanist pedagogy and that modern humanism is not a satisfactory rationale for the study of writing.  Crowley envisions possible nonhumanist rationales that could be developed for vertical curricula in writing instruction, were the universal requirement not in place.

Composition in the University examines the required introductory course in composition within American colleges and universities. According to Sharon Crowley, the required composition course has never been conceived in the way that other introductory courses have been—as an introduction to the principles and practices of a field of study. Rather it has been constructed throughout much of its history as a site from which larger educational and ideological agendas could be advanced, and such agendas have not always served the interests of students or teachers, even though they are usually touted as programs of study  that students “need.”

If there is a master narrative of the history of composition, it is told in the institutional attitude that has governed administration, design, and staffing of the course from its beginnings—the attitude that the universal requirement is in place in order to construct docile academic subjects.

Crowley argues that due to its association with literary studies in English departments, composition instruction has been inappropriately influenced by humanist pedagogy and that modern humanism is not a satisfactory rationale for the study of writing. She examines historical attempts to reconfigure the required course in nonhumanist terms, such as the advent of communications studies during the 1940s. Crowley devotes two essays to this phenomenon, concentrating on the furor caused by the adoption of a communications program at the University of Iowa.

Composition in the University concludes with a pair of essays that argue against maintenance of the universal requirement. In the last of these, Crowley envisions possible nonhumanist rationales that could be developed for vertical curricula in writing instruction, were the universal requirement not in place.

Crowley presents her findings in a series of essays because she feels the history of the required composition course cannot easily be understood as a coherent narrative since understandings of the purpose of the required course have altered rapidly from decade to decade, sometimes in shockingly sudden and erratic fashion.

The essays in this book are informed by Crowley’s long career of teaching composition, administering a composition program, and training teachers of the required introductory course. The book also draw on experience she gained while working with committees formed by the Conference on College Composition and Communication toward implementation of the Wyoming Resolution, an attempt to better the working conditions of post-secondary teachers of writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty is golden
Future writing instructors need to read what Crowley has to say. She minces no words and calls rhetoric and composition instruction what it often is: a dreary bureaucracy more interested in policing student thought and behavior than encouraging beginning writers to argue well. Her discussion concerning graduate assistants is particularly salient. She correctly assumes beginning writers should be taught by the most experienced faculty, not first-timers.

1-0 out of 5 stars half-star
Some of these essays are familiar, and are no fresher in their reprinted form in this volume.Crowley's polemics are tiresome and her remarks about the role of first-year writing courses in the college curriculum areneither radical nor particularly useful.I can imagine educators cheeringat certain portions of this volume, but the after-effect is that it wasmerely another exercise in reading, an occasion for an author/educator to"vent" spleen on the profession. It's hard to admire this work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Refund!
Why did I buy this book?Crowley manages to quote and cite herself enough to make me realize that her intended audience must be herself! At least she's honest: these ARE "polemical essays."But do we reallyneed more polemics in higher education? This profession isn't polemicalenough already?

2-0 out of 5 stars puzzled
I want to say I like this book. There are elements in it that are striking-- insightful. But I found myself feeling burdened by the tone of the book-- an incessantly polemical stance that Crowley takes on so manyissues.I don't disagree with her; indeed, I agree with a good deal ofwhat she says about first year composition in the university. But there isalready so much didactic material in English studies and in the academy, ingeneral. This book made me think of a relentless school teacher tellingeveryone where our previous education has gone wrong.

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit self-involved...
After a while, the polemical tone of this book becomes irritating.Crowley evidently thinks most highly of her own previous writings. She does make an interesting case for abolishing first-year composition as arequirement, and then she re-makes it, and re-makes it, etc. There issomething distastefully showy about this book. ... Product Description

Dionysius of Halicarnassus had migrated to Rome by 30 BCE, where he lived until his death some time after 8 BCE, writing his Roman Antiquities and teaching the art of rhetoric and literary composition.

Dionysius's purpose, both in his own work and in his teaching, was to re-establish the classical Attic standards of purity, invention and taste in order to reassert the primacy of Greek as the literary language of the Mediterranean world. He advocated the minute study of the styles of the finest prose authors of the fifth and fourth century BCE, especially the Attic orators. His critical essays on these and on the historian Thucydides represent an important development from the somewhat mechanical techniques of rhetorical handbooks to a more sensitive criticism of individual authors. Illustrating his analysis with well-chosen examples, Dionysius preserves a number of important fragments of Lysias and Isaeus.

The essays on those two orators and on Isocrates, Demosthenes and Thucydides comprise Volume I of this edition. Volume II contains three letters to his students; a short essay on the orator Dinarchus; and his finest work, the essay On Literary Composition, which combines rhetoric, grammar and criticism in a manner unique in ancient literature.

The Loeb Classical Library also publishes a seven volume edition of Roman Antiquities, by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, a history from earliest times to 264 BCE.

3-0 out of 5 stars English Language Lieterature and Composition: Essays and Pedagody Study Guide (Praxis Study Guides) test codes: 0042,0043
I believe the Pedagogy (0043) was very well outlined with multiple examples for teaching literature. It also gives you a list of the books you can read to prepare you for the test and there were several sample responses. However, the were not enough sample responses for the responding to student writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME for the essay test
I used another study guide and failed the essay test. After looking over this study guide, I knew exactly what the scorers were looking for and in what format, and passed the second time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
Here is the problem: Every year the test is different. This prep test isn't going to help you pass the exam. The exam is largely based on what you should already know. But if you must, brush up on the parts of speech, poetic devices, types of poetry, and literary genres. This exam will also test your knowledge of certain authors...there is no way for you to know which author's they're going to ask you about. Luckily these are only a few questions. In short, the few things you could possibly study up on you could find on the internet. You don't need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars ETS Guides will help you pass Praxis!
I graduated college in 1987 and am hoping to teach through an alternative certification program.I took the Middle School Language Arts Praxis earlier this year and passed the first time, using the ETS Middle School Praxis Study Guide. Now I'm going to take the secondary English tests 0041 and 0042.I looked at this book at our local college library, but it was only for reference and could not be checked out. This book is a good study guide. It includes lists of authors and titles you need to be familiar with, along with detailed explanations about the types of composition questions, required responses, and scoring guidelines. It even includes a full Practice Test which mirrors the actual Praxis. You won't find a book with all the answers in it, trust me, I've searched for one of those too.You should buy this one if you plan to pass Praxis.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pointless for 0043
I signed up to take the PRAXIS 0043 English exam. I ordered this book thinking it would help. Delivery was prompt, but the problem is the book's content. For 0043, you're writing two essays. The questions are always the same. You can see the questions by downloading a free Test-At-A-Glance from the ETS website. The only difference is the material you'd be asked to respond to. You can use the suggested list on the free download or any high school reading list and practice writing from there. Even in this book, the practice test offered ten choices of works for response; only three were on their suggested reading list (which is noted as NOT being exhaustive). The section showing how sample essays are graded could be helpful, but out of a possible ten essays, for instance, only one is shown being graded, which doesn't much help you if you wrote on any of the other works. The student response section is fairly self-explanatory; just make sure you thoroughly respond to each part of the question. Overall, I was so bummed to have paid this much for a study guide, to have been made to believe that the guide is written by the ultimate authorities of the test, and to have discovered that it was a big waste. ...
