Product Description
Using the concept of community building as a framework, this volume summarizes and updates readers on the state of adult English as a second language (ESL) education in the United States. It provides a complete description of this population of learners and their learning needs. The various chapters discuss possibilities for community building in the adult ESL classroom, combining research, theory, and practice.

Community building is not a new topic; we often discuss it informally with our colleagues and students. However, scant written material exists-with a focus on adult ESL-documenting how it happens or reconciling theory with practitioners' experiences. In this volume, several practitioners and researchers explain the ways in which they use community-building principles in adult ESL settings. The authors' descriptions of applications of community-building principles can help other adult educators implement these ideas in their teaching practice.

This is the 121st volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education is an indispensable series that explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums. ... Product Description
With practical examples, humor, and passion, A Way to Connect introduces prospective teachers of English as a Foreign Language to the established principles of the field. Its focus on creative applications of foundational principles make it especially relevant for teachers in areas with few technological resources. In A Way to Connect, volunteer teachers and emerging professionals will find an encouraging guide toward classes characterized by the high quality joy of learning.

A Way to Connect draws readers in with great examples for complex concepts, showing that language learning and language teaching are alive, ever changing, and fun! It empowers teachers to empower their students with the gift of always being 'seekers' for more knowledge.
--Ellen Lewin, ESOL and English Instructor, Minneapolis Community and Technical College

What a treasure-trove of valuable information! A Way to Connect is readable and practical, full of the kinds of valuable tidbits new teachers depend on as they set off in thier new profession. Randall Gwin lays a solid base of information with a voice of experience... This is the kind of practical handbook that can help to make the early years of teaching manageable instead of overwhelming.
--Andrea Poulos, College of Arts and Letters, University of Wisconsin-Madison

...fresh and immensely practical. After reading many, many TESOL books, and teaching overseas for over a decade, I rank it at the top of the list of usable and reusable EFL teaching resources. If you want a nice book to sit on your shelf, do not buy this one: this is a book to use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical
My wife used this book in learning to teach English. She noted that when you teach or learn a language your aim is communication with real people. When you read this book, you can sense that the author is effectively communicating with you. His examples are particularly useful, and they also serve well to illustrate the point he is making in the text. The questions at the end of the chapters stimulate your thinking about how to teach specific students, aiming your lessons at their particular needs. All in all, this is a fun book to use, full of humor as well as excellent advice and examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical and easy to read
If you are new to teaching English as a second language, this book is for you. It's easy to read and practical. First, the book explains the basic theories of second language acquisition. Then it evaluates common teaching methods. There are chapters on how to teach speaking, writing and reading. There is even a chapter explaining the basics of English grammar. The grammar chapter is my favorite. (This chapter is great for those of us who need to review English grammar before we attempt to teach it to foreign students! ) It makes learning English grammar easy!In my own teaching of ESL, I find myself referring to the grammar chapter over and over. This book can help make teaching easier instead of overwhelming.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWAYTOC
I found this book wonderfully helpful.Besides giving the nuts and bolts of language teaching, it is full of interesting information on how language actually works and is best learned.I wish it was around 15 years ago when I first attempted Russian!

5-0 out of 5 stars readable, practicable, applicable
As a relatively new teacher of English with a Master's Degree in applied linguistics, I found this book an incredibly helpful introduction to the field of teaching English to adults. It is very readable and very practical.I would recommend it to anyone who is involved in teaching English to adults. It nicely combines theory with practical application of principles, and each chapter concludes with discussion questions that help the reader apply principles to real issues that a teacher will inevitably face.

3-0 out of 5 stars a pleasant introduction
The term "foundations" in the subtitle is the key to appreciating this book. It zooms over theories and bypasses research and reference notes in a way that makes it relatively shallow but surprisingly fun as books on things like grammar go. I'd recommend it highly for volunteer English teachers on summer trips. You could probably read it on the plane over, and it would give you a good "foundation" for a language camp or similar program.

I took off a star for the poor editing--obvious copy-paste typos like, in one place, defining "adjective" and "adverb" as the same thing. These mistakes didn't distract from the meaning, but they detracted from the books' authority. Also, a book like this, even as a general guide, would benefit from more citations.
