This book is extremely helpful in understanding all the aspects of windows millenium.I recently went to a computer store this weekend and looked at all the possibilities of the windows millenium versions and this book, by far, is the most cleanest, clearest, and easiest to understand of all the books I looked at. Don't dissapoint yourself, buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
The advertising on the flaps for this book is very misleading - "Need help with a brand image and marketing?" "Want to ensure that you always make a profit?" I found very little on those topics in this book. The author at first seems to try to teach the reader to build but does it in so general a way as to give no real information. As she states throughout the publication, most information can be found on the Second Life Wiki and in the resident forums. For someone trying to start a business in Second Life, there are much better books available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars COMPUTER TECHNICIAN
Hi

This book was full of valuable knowledge that I have already learned from college.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid
I was extremely disappointed with this book. What I was looking for was a quick introduction to give me a grasp of the basic concepts of NT Server. What I got instead was a book that is extremely lacking in direction and filled with jargon it never really fully explains. It does have some useful information but it's so misplaced within the text that you kind of have to know exactly what you are looking for to find it. Even then it leaves you hanging. This book proceeds to tell you things like (and I quote) this feature is "one of the most powerful methods available to administrators", however it "is beyond the scope of this book".

Don't waste your money on this book like I did. Instead pick up any book by Mark Minasi like the one in the Sybex "Mastering" series. That guy is just plain awesome. He is probably one of the most talented technical writers I have read. You read his stuff and all sorts of lights go on in your head.

Cheers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to know Windows NT Server 4
Ever wondered about how large organizations utilize even larger computers? Baffled by techno-jargon? Tired of techies telling you that you know nothing? If so, this splendid text is an absolutely imperative read thatwill change all that. Oh, I know. You've read extensively about the mosttechnical-of-technical stuff about Unix and Novell--high tech's big boys.Nevertheless, you still find yourself ignorant.

Well, thanks to this bookand Windows NT Server 4 by Microsoft, mastery of what goes on in bigbusiness and computers everywhere is unbelievably simple--and enjoyable!Indeed, the author takes you on a tour that simplifies such arcanehigh-tech jargon as TCP/IP, load balancing, DHCP, NTFS, , LAN, WAN, IIS,domains, remote access, and much more.

Sounds impossible? Well, the badnews is, proficiency at all this seemingly arcane stuff is imperative inorder to get ahead today.

But, hey, the good news is, this book and thedelightful Windows NT Server interface together are as simple as answeringquestions like, What is your favorite color?

Well, almost! Read thisbook, and you'll agree with me that high tech can be made simple. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book...really helped me pass
After reading several other so called exam prep books and then failing the exam , I decided to pick this one up after reading all the great reviews. The second time I wrote the exam I passed with flying colors. I got 20%more then I needed to pass. Thanks Mr. Barton on a job well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you could only have one book to study, this should be it!
What a GREAT book! The material is very well organized, and straight forward.Marc presents the information as if he were talkin' person-to-person with ya.Marc doesn't leave you hangin' there wondering,"...what the hell does that mean?" I would strongly suggest yagrab this book.Use it in conjunction with: 1)Win95 Resource Kit -fordetailed information, and 2)Transcender Practice Exams -the closest thingto the real test that you can find.Good Luck on your exam, you futureMCP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on the money
Nice job Marcus!I was amazed at how similar the actual exam was to the practice questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all expensive and worth every penny!
I used this book as my primary and almost exclusive study guide for the exam.Having used Windows '95 extensively for some time and more than a little comfortable with installing, configuring, and optimizing both thehost computer as well as peripheral hardware, I was pleased when I foundmore than half of the book dealing with just these subjects. But when Iwent to take the exam, I found it was another story. The exam dealtpredominantly with networking and the book didn't.I knew the book butfound it to be quite different than the actual exam!My advice is tosearch elsewhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has been a great help to me in passing #70-064
This book has been a great help to me in passing exam #70-064. The author states in hisintroduction that the book is aimed specifically at getting you through the exam and not to learn you everything there is to know aboutwindows 95, and that is exactly what it does. I particularly like the"Test Day Facts" at the start of each chapter. There is also anabundance of typical exam questions with answers, and a full practice examat the end. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Too bad there isn't a book like this for all of the MCSE exams. It's concise but detailed enough to give you all the info you need to pass the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for testers
I found the book to be a good exam reference. Unattended installations are really nailed as is troubleshooting. However, the coverage of RAS is cursory and network monitoring was not even included in the topics.

It isbest suited for test takers alone so I would have reservations for anyonebuying it as a blanket reference guide for NT WKSN.

4-0 out of 5 stars It takes a lot more than 21 days...
I learned Borland C++ OWL from this book. The book is thick and thorough. It takes a lot more than 21 days to complete this book if you follow along, type in all the examples and do all the exercises. Day 18 is a killer. I'veread some of the other comments and beg to differ with the guy who ratedthis 1 star. All the code DOES compile, if it doesn't, it is because hetyped it in WRONG. There are about 5 bugs in the book, the source code isavailable from the publisher's website.

Save your 40 bucks and don't buy this heap of garbage!!!!!! AND when you contact the publisher they tell you that they pulled the title from production!!!!! Why do they keep selling it then?????!!!!!!!!

For the crowd that finds cartoon-style graphical trainingguides too elementary, Perry has created a book that begins by walkingnew Windows 98 users through the most basic aspects of their operatingsystem and goes on to help them discover fairly advanced features. Bythe end of Sams Teach Yourself Windows 98 in 24 Hours, youought to be using the Internet, channels, and other potentiallycomplicated features. The idea is that you'll be a competent Windows98 user by the time you put this book down.

After explaining themost elementary aspects of Windows 98--the Start button, the Taskbar, the fundamentals of window management, and so on--the author proceedsto detail the features of the Active Desktop and the various means bywhich you can locate files. From there, it's on to runningapplications (including DOS programs) and the mechanics ofinstallation and removal. All the major accessories (Calculator andthe rest) receive documentation.

Much of this book has to do withthe Internet: connecting a computer to it and using variousapplications to get something out of it. Internet Explorer gets plentyof ink, as does Outlook Express (Windows 98's electronic mailtool). Remaining chapters have to do with multimedia, channels, hardware installation, Update Manager, and other features. You'll findthis book to be an excellent tool for learning your way around Windows98 for the first time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners and "power users".
I think this is a good book for someone who wants to learn Windows 98 from scratch, but also interesting for the more experienced user looking to make use of all of the features included in this software.

Personally I'm acomfortable user who wanted to discover the new features (vs. Windows 95),and learn tips and shortcuts on how to use this new operating system moreefficiently. From this perspective, this book gave me satisfaction.Ilearned a few shortcuts and features I hadn't discovered after using it forabout 6 monthes. The interesting paragraphs are clearly highlited withicons, it's good for somebody who doesn't want to take the time to read itfrom cover to cover. This way, the 1-hour lessons takes more like 15minutes each !

Now I'm not too sure about spending the money to buy it (Ijust borrowed it from my local library). I think it makes sense only ifyou're a total beginner and/or uncomfortable with a computer, so that youwill need constant access to it (like my dad! :). ... Read more

Cassel and Hart open with answers to the question everyone hasabout Windows 98: what's new? After a quick tour, they get into thedetails of file management and the use of the Recycle Bin. Fonts, printing, and multimedia come next, followed bycustomization. Software installation and execution--including MS-DOSprograms--get copious attention. The chapter on stand-alone systemsalso covers both system maintenance and management of multipleusers.

The authors provide instructions for connecting to theglobal network via a modem, then go into detail on Internet Explorer,Outlook Express, NetMeeting, and FrontPage Express. Personal WebServer gets better-than-average coverage. Cassel and Hart wrap up withinformation on attaching a Windows 98 machine to a local area networkand installing the operating system on a portable machine. Altogether, you'll find the answers to most fairly basic Windows 98 questions inthis book.

The book's style combines step-by-step instructions withexplanatory prose, much of which seems to result from the authors'real-life experience and experimentation. A short glossary, questions, answers, and exercises wrap up each chapter. --David Wall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows 98 easy on your own
This is one of the best handbooks for beginners to study Windows 98 on your own without knowing anything about computers - easy to read, descriptive, not requiring additional references, complete, with glossary and also many example illustrations in 21 chapters - each for 1 day (or more) of reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Windows 98 for preschoolers!
Despite this books 600+ pages, it's probably the most non-technical computer book I've ever read. It's clearly geared towards the "just opened the box" set, but, lets face it, not many people fall into thatcategory with Win 98 nowadays. Anytime there's ever any mention of anythingthat seems technical, such as the Windows registery, the author simply says"this is technical, don't mess with it."

If you have absolutelyno computing experience whatsoever, consider this book. If you wantsomething with any real meat, look elsewhere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I bought this book !
I have been a computer user for over 20 years now - I've installed Win 3,3.1, 3.11, 95, NT, 98 so I am very expert at installations and useage ofthe O/S

I thought I'd get a jump start on the Windows ME environment andI got this book, based on the ratings here at Amazon.com.This book isnothing more than a beginning computer user's "How To" book. Ittells you what a mouse is..what a Disk is..I mean, come on.The book issupposed to be about Windows ME, and instead is a "Kiddie's Guide toyour First PC"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book -- Not sure about the 10 minutes part
This book is helpful for me, since I would like to get up to speed on WinME before I have to actually get it. The book is cheap, outlines themajor points of using this OS and is a good value! ... Read more
