5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentVocabulary Series
I own all six of the books in this series and find them to be extremely useful and effective. My students ask for these lessons. The books range from Beginner, Book 1 to Advanced, Book 6.I like the fact that at the beginning of each unit there is a word chart that gives all the forms of each base word studied. For instance,if the word, "effect" is being studied, "effective", "effectively",and "effectiveness" are also included. Each word is defined and an example given, and followed with exercises.I often assign these lessons as pair work. ... Product Description
Pimsleur has been a recognized name in language training for decades. Now Audiofy audiobook chip editions of Pimsleur's "English as a Second Language" courses shrink the traditional binder of a dozen cassettes or CDs into a tiny memory card - yielding an affordable, durable, more portable product. Each Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds an unabridged course with 15 hours or more of digital audio, and saves the last listening position automatically (unlike CDs).Created for adult learners, the English for Korean speakers program offers 30 half-hour lessons emphasizing good pronunciation, common courtesy and fundamental vocabulary for travel needs and helpful interaction with native speakers. While Pimsleur courses focus on speaking rather than reading or writing, a small booklet of optional reading material offers practice recognizing and pronouncing common words. This Audiofy audiobook chip edition can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) using an SD memory card slot or adapter, like those for digital cameras. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above).Audiofy audiobook chips avoid the lengthy downloading or "syncing" of other digital formats. Audiofy audiobook chips offer "no look" navigation, announcing your listening position with two button clicks and letting you jump to other lessons in seconds. It's also ideal for anyone hindered by the small displays on some devices. Since university linguist Dr. Paul Pimsleur designed courses that are almost entirely audio-based, they are suitable for traveling, commuting or exercising. With Audiofy audiobook chips, this proven technique is now more convenient than ever. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the bookchip, buy the CDs
Dung mua Audiofy Bookchip! Mua CD di!
That's Vietnamese for "Don't buy the Audiofy Bookchip! Buy the CD!".
ESL Vietnamese [CD]

The Audiofy bookchip is very poor quality because it is 16 hours compressed onto a less-than 50MB bookchip. What's worse is that the Audiofy player which you might want to use to play the bookchip is very very very very very very poor quality, far worse than the quality of the compressed audio. And the bookchip is in a custom format and copy-protected, so don't think you can transfer the files onto your MP3 player and listen to them in decent quality. So do yourself a favour, and buy the CD version, then convert it to MP3. That way you get the same convenience, but 20 times the sound quality.

As for the content, Pimsleur is excellent, but this is only for beginners. If you can read this review past the first line, then you don't need this course. On the other hand, if you only know a few vocabulary words but can't put a sentence together, this course is quite good.

I bought this for a friend of mine, who couldn't say a single sentence in English beforehand. I don't think she was very disciplined in doing one lesson every day for a month, so it took her longer than a month to do, and I think she forgot lots of it. Doing it every day is really necessary for remembering it. She didn't like the fact that it didn't have written notes, although personally I think that is a good feature.

I have not done this course myself, since I am a native English speaker, however I have done the English-to-Vietnamese version, which I found very useful. However for Vietnamese only the first 30-lesson volume exists, and the second and third volumes don't, so you will only go some of the way towards learning the language.

Amazon is not a cheap place to buy Pimsleur, you will find better prices elsewhere.
