Product Description
The geotechnical engineering profession has inherited a rich body of literature that documents the development of fundamental concepts and their application to practical problems. Many of these papers contain information as useful today as when they were first written. Others provide great insight into the origins and development of our field and the thought processes of its leaders. A History of Progress: Selected U.S. Papers in Geotechnical Engineering provides a wide view of the development of geotechnical engineering from a broad spectrum of contributors. From the highly theoretical to the elegantly practical, the 78 historical papers in this one-of-a-kind collection are significant for their contribution to the geotechnical engineering literature. A large collection of papers by Karl Terzaghi, widely known as the father of soil mechanics, are included -- as well as papers by other early pioneers in the field, including R.R. Proctor, Arthur Casagrande, and Ralph Peck. The papers of over 60 other geotechnical engineering pioneers also appear in this collection. The Geo-Institute decided to reprint these papers in this 2-volume Geotechnical Special Publication to make the papers more readily available and hence promote their use by the geotechnical engineering profession. Papers were selected by a committee of eminent engineers representing academia and practice in various segments of the geotechnical engineering profession. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good detailed reference book
This book is loaded with good safety and health related information for engineers.I had to buy for the graduate engineering class I was taking and the professor was only able to cover less than 1/2 of the textbook for a full semester course.

1-0 out of 5 stars No book received
You ask me for a review of a book I never received. That's impossible. I still don't have my book. I want my money back or my book. I will leave Saudi Arabia by the 29th of September I my book is not here yet. Everytime I call the attendant says that Amazon has no resposability. Well I got the book through Amazon.

Please find a sotution to the problem and stop acting like you have nothing to do with it. My semester is almost half gone and I still don't have my book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ideal introduction to MATLAB for freshmen engineers
This book makes an ideal introduction to MATLAB for beginning engineers and programmers. The book uses many actual examples from basic physics, chemistry, and trigonometry to illustrate the use of MATLAB. There is ample explanation of the concepts and formulas used, although these explanations can be easily glossed over by more experienced engineers. The book includes practice exercises throughout each chapter with answers in the back of the book, as well as problem sets at the end of each chapter.

I actually used the open source Octave package instead of MATLAB with the book, and did not encounter any problems. The book discusses the MATLAB graphical user interface, which Octave does not have, but I simply skipped those sections without it interfering with my understanding of the rest of the material.

I was bothered by some shortcomings for use with new engineers. In most of the problems, the units seem to be carefully chosen to prevent the need for dimensional analysis. The book demonstrates dimensional analysis in many examples, but doesn't explain the principles involved or require dimensional analysis in most problems. This could lead to sloppiness with units. The book also doesn't seem to mention the importance of significant figures. In some exercises, it wasn't clear whether the data in the first column should be included in the table itself or inferred from the row numbers. None of these are major problems, as any decent engineering curriculum will teach dimensional analysis and significant figures, and in practice it's a matter of taste whether to include data in the first column or not. The book excels at its primary purpose: teaching the use of MATLAB to beginning engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point and basic reference
If you have just received MATLAB, have it on the office/school computer and never use it, or use it so infrequently that you do not recall some of the basic commands this is a near perfect book for you. While the book has many examples using physics, finance or other problems, they are there primarily as examples on how to set up MATLAB to solve the problem and go on to produce presentable outputs and plots.

After just a day or two you will forever resist typing complex formulas into a tiny MS Excel cell to produce a screen full of data that you then must capture into a graph. In MATLAB the same problem is similar to typing it out in a few lines of plain English, hit the return key, and have the table or graph simply appear, save it as a jpg and insert it into a MS Office application.

In summary, if you have a mathematical expression or need to construct a problem ranging from simple to somewhat complex, and want a guide on how to quickly lay it into MATLAB and get a result this is the book for you. If you use MATLAB daily and are comfortable with it, want to create GUIs, need to capture streaming data for real time analysis, etc this is the wrong book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text
I used this book to teach an introductory engineering programming course.I'd say the biggest strengths of this text are the "non-computer-science-y" way that the material is discussed, and the excellent homework problems. They provide a way for me to reintroduce topics that students are supposed to know "on the sly."The problems are realistic. The tone is sufficiently casual, and doesn't assume any prior knowledge of the material. The only thing it's missing is an Appendix to cover some of the math that students may have missed like polar coordinates, some details on matrices, and a quick review of complex numbers and graphing them.I'm really happy with this book, and the students haven't complained overmuch about it, which is unusual for any engineering textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars UnivInstructor
A comprehensive text that focuses on MATLAB applications in engineering.Practice problems help students learn as they encounter new material.Highly recommend this text for all engineering discliplines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid book on MATLAB basics!
Having forgotten most of what I had learned previously in MATLAB, this book was just what I needed to rebuild that lost foundation. It starts from the basics and progressively builds your knowledge base, chapter-by-chapter. Having noted that, if you have had any previous programming experience, this book will serve to familiarize you with the fundamental MATLAB commands. If you have had no prior programming experience, consider this a crash course; however, if you have never programmed or used MATLAB before, BUY THIS BOOK.It is a lot more detailed than just about any other book out there, and is aimed specifically at the beginning user (whereas other books either assume you have the basics or gloss over them).

As another person commented, this book does not have any advanced material on using the software, so if that is your need, you would be better served by another book (probably a book on the subject matter you are looking to apply this software to; a good many may even have sample code) - this one is for newbies or someone looking to have a solid reference on the basic commands/functions available within MATLAB. To that end, it serves its audience superbly. ... Read more

Product Description
These case histories will be of interest to both civil engineers and geophysicists. They document the use of a variety of geophysical methods in support of civil engineering projects. Geophysical methods presented include electrical, seismic, and magnetic (specifically Time Domain EM (TDEM), DC Resistivity, Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electromagnetic, Seismic Tomography, Refraction, Reflection, Doppler Shift Sonar, Side Scan Sonar, and Magnetics). Whether mapping an aquifer for a public water supply, planning a waste disposal project, or investigating the causes of a landslide, geophysical techniques support engineers in their work to serve the public welfare. Transportation engineers will find that seismic tomography is an attractive alternative to the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) method of evaluating pavements. Lastly, both contractors and owners will be interested in how geophysics can reduce the risk in differing site condition (DSC) clauses by identifying site conditions that differ from what might be expected with only a casual surface examination. ...
