From the supplier: The deregulation of the energy sector presents a number of cost-saving opportunities for industrial energy consumers. Unfortunately, studies show that few industrial companies are updated on the changes in the energy marketplace and are knowledgeable about the impact of deregulation on them. Companies that want to control their energy costs may consider partnering with energy suppliers. Energy partnerships offer a number of benefits, including cost control, focus on core competencies, energy asset optimization and risk management.

Description:
The factors most often cited as the causes of the California crisis are the scarcity of generation capacity, a flawed market design, and the venality of electricity producers. However, many of these attributes were present in other electricity markets, none of which have suffered through anything like the California crisis. The only factor not seen in other markets in the world is the lack of contracts or other forms of long-term supply arrangements. Policy efforts are therefore best directed at developing a regulatory and retail environment where contracts are freely entered into at prices reflective of underlying market conditions. ... This digital document is a journal article from European Journal of Operational Research, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The European electricity market has been deregulated recently. This means that energy companies must optimise power generation considering the rapidly fluctuating price on the spot market. Optimisation has also become more difficult. New production technologies, such as gas turbines (GT), combined heat and power generation (CHP), and combined steam and gas cycles (CSG) require non-convex models. Risk analysis through stochastic simulation requires solving a large number of models rapidly. These factors have created a need for more versatile and efficient decision-support tools for energy companies. We formulate the decision-problem of a power company as a large mixed integer programming (MIP) model. To make the model manageable we compose the model hierarchically from modular components. To speed up the optimisation procedure, we decompose the problem into hourly sub-problems, and develop a customised Branch-and-Bound algorithm for solving the sub-problems efficiently. We demonstrate the use of the model with a real-life application. ... Read more

From the supplier: The gradual movement of the electricity industry towards deregulation should compel property management companies to make the necessary preparations. One preparatory measure is an evaluation of the current energy use in each building. A review of billings can help property managers identify billing mistakes and recapture overcharges, and formulate ways of improving energy efficiency. It is also useful to conduct a load analysis to determine when energy usage is at its highest or its lowest level. Properties that accurately predict their load needs can minimize the risk of their energy service provider and, thus, negotiate for better pricing. Another recommended measure is for property managers to seek short-term contracts with usage agreements that are as flexible as possible.
