Product Description

Completely updated with new entries and extensive revisions of the previous 1,800, The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia Of Rock & Roll is the authoritative volume on the world's music makers -- from the one-hit wonders to the megastars.

In 1983, Rolling Stone Press introduced its first Rock & Roll Encyclopedia. Almost two decades later, it has become the premier guide to the history of rock & roll, and has been selected by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum as its official source of information. Giving full coverage to all aspects of the rock scene, it tells the story of rock & roll in a clear and easy reference format, including complete discographies, personnel changes for every band, and backstage information like date and place of birth, from Elvis Presley to Eminem.

Since the last edition, the music scene has exploded in every area, from boy-bands to hip-hop, electronica to indie rock. Here, the Encyclopedia explores them all -- 'NSync, Notorious B.I.G., Ricky Martin, Radiohead, Britney Spears, Blink-182, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Portishead, Fatboy Slim, Fiona Apple, Lil' Kim, Limp Bizkit, Oasis, Outkast, Yo La Tengo, TLC, and many, many more. The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll, Third Edition includes all the facts, phenomena, and flukes that make up the history of rock. Accompanying the biographical and discographical information on the nearly 2,000 artists included in this edition are incisive essays that reveal the performers' musical influences, first breaks, and critical and commercial hits and misses, as well as evaluations of their place in rock history. Filled with hundreds of historical photos, The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia is more than just a reference book, it is the bible of rock & roll. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not exactly what I expected
It was very informative, but did not include the updated info from the 1st Edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is probably the best book of it's kind (rock encyclopedia).Gives a good bit of depth on a lot of artists and is easy to pick up and just read about an artist or two in just a few minutes.Would get 5 stars except my copy came out in the year 2000 I think, and is now in need of some updates

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock & Roll book
I bought this book as a gift to my husband. He's really into the Rock and Roll era, 1960's-1970's.He enjoys reading it for the different artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any rock and roll lover!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!
This is such a fantastic book! There are a few artists/bands that made it that really shouldn't have.N'Sync and Backstreet Boys are not rock bands. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Counseling Package
My student advisor recommended this book but I purchased the entire package. I am very pleased with this product. I am learning so much more about the various aspects of the community counseling courses I took an am taking as an advance graduate student. This package is invaluable. I know that I will be able to pass the COMPS, NCE and other related exams due to this package. I recommend to everyone who hopes to continue to grow in the professional counseling field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practically Perfect!
I am definitely glad that I purchased the review guide despite not taking the exam yet. Rosenthal covers areas that I didnt learn in class and he also has a bit of humor which takes the dread out of having to study. The only thing that could make this better is having the CDs broken down into specific topics (e.g. if you wanted to just review CBT or Gestalt therapy, you'd have to skip around til you found it under Theories). Also although the study guide book has questions and answers, a practice test of some kind would be a nice bonus! But otherwise I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I would highly recommend this material for anyone who needs to prepare for the NCE.

4-0 out of 5 stars your best best for any professional counseling exam
The package is very comprehensive, giving the best review you'll find from a review company. The CDs are convenient to use when you load them onto an MP3 player. No review could ever cover everything that could possibly be on the exam but this package hits the main topic areas. It certainly gives you an anchor point with which to study for your counseling exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rosenthal's Encyclopedia of Counseling
Rosenthal does it again! His updated book hammers home the points and information beginning counselors need for upcoming exams or seasoned counselors need for refresher. I also bought and listened to his audio cd set for further instruction. He explains theory and techniques in such an easy-to-understand fashion. I fully expect to pass the NCE after completing reading his book and finishing the cds. I'll update this review after I've taken the exam. ... Read more

Product Description

Now in paperback and updated to include forty new entries, this "leviathan of surf literature" (Surfing magazine) is a remarkable collection of expert knowledge, spine-tingling stories, and little-known trivia. With 1,500 alphabetical entries and 300 illustrations, The Encyclopedia of Surfing is the most comprehensive review of the people, places, events, equipment, vernacular, and lively history of this fascinating sport by "one of surfing's most knowledgeable historians" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Each year, the surf industry brings in $4.5 billion, and more than two-and-a-half million Americans, from California to Delaware, have caught the wave. The Encyclopedia of Surfing is a book that no surfer-or armchair adventurer-will be able to resist.
(20031001)Amazon.com Review
What's that sound coming from the beach? That's the rustle of pages turning, as would-be immortals look themselves up in The Encyclopedia of Surfing, surfing's first comprehensive reference book. The Encyclopedia of Surfing chronicles nearly every bit of wave-riding--its history, places, mythology, champions, tragedies, in-jokes, and minutiae. Author Matt Warshaw, former editor of Surfer magazine, and his fellow researchers took three years to put together this prodigious tome. The most surprising thing about the book is its terrific readability. Though the 1,500 entries are organized in typical encyclopedic style, one after the other alphabetically, none of them--not a single one--is completely boring. Not even the one on the technicalities of fin placement. In fact, the book is a trap, leading unsuspecting readers on a wandering journey from pioneer surfer Duke Kahanamoku to the development of hollow boards to the lifeguards who used them to lifeguard Eddie Aikau to his home in Waimea Bay to.... Suddenly, hours have gone by and there's still the huge entry on Gidget to read. Illustrated like a dictionary, this book has only one or two small black-and-white photos every couple of pages. A history of surfing introduces the entries; at the end, a bibliography, round-up of surf contest results, and lists of movies, magazines, and music provide the big finish. Though Warshaw's first three books (SurfRiders, Above the Roar, and Maverick's) were entertaining looks at surfers and surfing, this one makes him the official Kahuna of surf lore. Surfing is a multi-billion-dollar industry, flinging hordes of people and buckets of money into the waves each year. The Encyclopedia of Surfing is its new bible. --Therese Littleton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars encyclopedia of surfing
I bought this book for a decoration more or less in my son's room...but we have both found ourselves looking through the great pictures!

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Research on the sport of surfing
Matt went to Berkeley, a top-notch school, and so his research skills are high-level.One of the contributing ghost writers, who didn't get credit on this work, Nathan, just wrote a great surfing screenplay titled "Bliss" you can read for free on [...But I digress, I've surfed since the sixties, read all the magazines and books, and was surprised to read things here I didn't know.Sometimes I laugh at the magazine writers of today as they get things wrong about the sport's early days.Matt's always spot on.Anyone with the surfing bug, the desire to become a Don Redondo -- wiseman, wiseguy, or shaman of the sport -- needs to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lot's of Great Info

Product Description

The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics is a comprehensive reference work dealing with all aspects of its subject: history, types, movements, prosody, and critical terminology. Prepared by recognized authorities, its articles treat their topics in sufficient depth and with enough lucidity to satisfy the scholar and the general reader alike. Entries vary in length from relatively brief notices to substantial articles of about 20,000 words.

The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, published in 1965, established itself book as a standard in the field. Among the 215 contributors were Northrop Frye writing on allegory, Murray Krieger on belief in poetry, Philip Wheelwright on myth, John Hollander on music, and William Carlos Williams on free verse. In 1974, the Enlarged Edition increased the entries with dozens of new subjects, including rock lyric, computer poetry, and black poetry, to name just a few.

The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics accounts for the extraordinary change and explosion of knowledge within literary and cultural studies since the 1970s. This edition, completely revised, preserves what was most valuable from previous editions, while subjecting each existing entry to revision. Over 90 percent of the entries have been extensively revised and most major ones entirely rewritten. Completely new entries number 162, including those by new contributors Camille Paglia, Barbara Herrnstein Smith, Elaine Showalter, Houston Baker, Andrew Ross, and many more. New entries include those on cultural criticism, discourse, feminist poetics, and Chicano poetry.

Improvements cover several areas: All the recent developments in theory that bear on poetry are included; bibliographies of secondary sources are ex-tended; cross-references among entries and through blind entries have been expanded for greater ease of use; and coverage of emergent and non-Western poetries is dramatically increased. Indeed, a hallmark of the encyclopedia is its world-wide orientation on the poetry of national and cultural groups.Amazon.com Review
From abecedarius to zeugma, by way of cywydd, estribillo, Nibelungenstrophe, Tachtigers, and other poetic terms that sound like poetry, The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics is a gold mine for readers and writers of poetry alike. First published in 1965, this tome has evolved to reflect developments in critical thinking and an expanding knowledge of non-Western poetry (without, heaven forfend, being trendy: "a reference work," the editors explain, "must always distance itself from its time while it works to embrace that time"). For this third edition, the editors write, nearly every entry has been changed significantly, and 162 entries have been added. The preface claims coverage of every poetic tradition in the world, and one doesn't doubt it. There's enough material here to keep one browsing well past Yeats's "Second Coming." If that's not enough to quench your poetic thirst, fret not: a detailed bibliography concludes each entry. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good poetry handbook
Good and detailed book providing the advanced reader/poet with many information. As the title says a real encyclopaedia. One problem is that it is suitable only for very advanced readers and professional poets. Common readers will find difficulties. One more disadvantage is that the book is printed with very small font, making it difficult and tiring while reading. Good as a reference but difficult to use otherwise. It is recommended for experienced readers with poetry and poetics. Other people will be able to find everything but they will end up to find nothing. They should try something simpler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
At present I'm researching the way poets use structure as meaning in poetry. This excellent book not only explains the different poetic forms from poetic traditions from around the world, it also gives details of their history. The book is organised so information can be found quickly. The only drawback I found is the small font it uses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine reference book
I have very little to add to the laudatory reviews. Some found the print too small, but for me it was not a problem - I am used to using reference works with smallish print.

I just got my copy and found a lot of fascinating information on the ode which I didn't know. From what I've read so far, the topical discussions are excellent, and there are ample biographical references for the major and some of the minor entries. All in all, it is a great resource for student, poet, poetry lover, and critic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, informative and awkward
This is the most comprehensive and informative encylopedia of poetry and poetics that I know. It at times seems so comprehensive and detailed as to make understanding of its entries possible. It is in fact so overwhelming sometimes that it confuses by telling much more than I, at least, need or want to know. It seems to me in a way a very academic work, wonderful for critics but probably of very little use in inspiring to poetry. So much knowledge about poetry is not necessarily what poetry is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Less than perfect
This book is comprehensive and probably essential for the study of poetry. But there are several serious problems. First, there is only a completely useless Table of Contents and no index. Yes, it is an encyclopedia and the entries are in alphabetical order but the subjects are very broad (Symbol, Twentieth-Century Poetics) making it necessary to scan several pages in several different subject areas without knowing if you have missed the poem or poet you are looking for. How will you know to look for comments on The Illiad under the heading of Simile or that the subject heading Intuition contains a discussion of the Neo-Platonists? Scanning pages for a specific piece of information is difficult because the print is tiny. The Preface and Acknowledgments are in big print and then they switch to very small print for the remainder of the book. You will need lots of time and a magnifying glass to take full advantage of this book. ... Read more

my child got this for Christmas. He seems to like it just fine.He read it cover to cover. He would have said if he didn't like it but I've heard no complaints.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for the young
I bought this for my 7 year old son and he loves it.We had fun reading all of the stories about vampires, werewolves, and ghosts. This is a good book for younger kids that want to learn the basics about monsters. This is not an in depth book as you might think by the title.

5-0 out of 5 stars CGE Student Review
My favorite book is the Encyclopedia Horrorifica by Joshua Gee. The type of kind he wrote is science fiction and horror. The Encyclopedia Horrorifica is a scary book let your mind be filled with horror. The scenes include Alien Invasion, Monsters, and Creatures from the Deep my favorite is the Alien Invasion scene. If you've read Monsterology you know about a couple of these things. The book takes you around the world to find out about a bunch of things that would make you have nightmares for 2 weeks straight. The author Joshua Gee goes with pen and paper to explain the unexplainable. The Encyclopedia Horrorifica is enjoyable to ages 9-30. I like this book because it is scary and its chock full of scary stories. I really hope this review helps everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book!
Every page is packed with facts, information, and awesomeness, a great read and reference guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Page is PACKED: Amazing Bargain & Perfect Gift
The best way to sum it up:
X-files + Ripley's + Tales from the Crypt = ENCYCLOPEDIA HORRIFICA

I read a five-star review of the book somewhere and I couldn't understand what the fuss was about. But then I bought it as a gift for my nephew, and I liked it so much that I had to buy another copy for him! It PULLS you in like a hand from the grave......

The author ("Investigator Gee") has maybe achieved the impossible by creating a book that appeals to readers of all ages, but in different ways. There are plenty of facts and pictures for early Ripley's/Goosebumps readers like my nephew who love all things gross, but the look and feel and humor of the book are a lot like a My Chemical Romance video or a Tim Burton movie.

There are also a million "blink and youll miss it" references to grown-up stuff like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman plus "unexplained" science, etc.

And YES it even has a holographic cover!!!

A second edition of the complete guide to the history, culture and characters involved in the Mafia.Amazon.com Review
They're all there, starting with Anthony Joseph Accardo(1906-1992), the Chicago mob leader known as Tony to crime pals,Mr. Accardo to underlings, Joe Batters to his subordinates, and as"having more brains before breakfast than Al Capone had all day" tosyndicate supporters, and working through the alphabet to Abner"Longy" Zwillman (1899-1959), a crime-syndicate founder and New Jerseyboss, one of the most feared of the Jewish Mafia, known as the "AlCapone of new Jersey," and much revered for his love affair with JeanHarlow.

Between Accardo and Zwillman, Carl Sifakis explores the lives, reputations, exploits, and subcultures of more than 450 Mafiaperpetrators and personalities. Sifakis describes the individuals, codes of behavior, misdeeds, legal scrapes, rivalries, and flamboyantlifestyles associated with the world of organized crime--an entitywhose existence J. Edgar Hoover denied for 30 years. Sifakis'sresearch is thorough, and his subjects are nefarious andriveting. It's his feel for storytelling, however, that makes hisencyclopedia so enjoyable. He writes about infamous characters such asAl Capone (who felt his bootlegging was merely a public service) andJohn Gotti (a.k.a. the Teflon Don, who's now serving a life sentence)as well as the Mafia Social Clubs, Donnie Brasco (the FBI agent whoinfiltrated the mob and sent more than 100 mobsters to prison), andthe importance of slot machines to the post-Prohibition welfare oforganized crime.

With nearly 100 pictures and illustrations, Sifakis's mob opus isrequired reading for Mafia buffs, and a remarkably engaging guide foranyone interested in a factual report on organizedcrime. --Stephanie Gold ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource and Entertaining!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not comprehensive.
Not that user friendly either. No charts, no stats, and no bibliography and thus very risky as a reference source.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...
...page 405 states that "The forces of Harry Riccobene...did kill Salvatore Testa, the 28-year-old son of the slain Chicken Man Testa, regarded as a real comer in the mob."(He was in fact hit with a shotgun blast but he survived). Page 406 says "Scarfo had too suspicious a nature and he soon turned to ordering the deaths of loyal followers, starting with Salvatore Testa, his most competent hit man..." Testa did not survive this one, but who knew you could die twice? I don't know if there's any other mistakes in this book but that one is brutal.

I really do find this book helpful but was sadly disappointed to find that it didn't have enough activities for 2 yr olds.. If you are teaching children 3 or older I think you will love it.. I have recommended it to my friend who teachs preschool.. But if you are a toddler teacher I would recommend to search for something that has mostly toddler activities..

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Format-Generic Activities
I was excited to order this book, but found myself very disappointed after opening it. I skimmed through it maybe twice and have had no desire to look at it since. The format of the book is poor (in my opinion), most of the activities are corny and anything but creative, and everything about the book seems outdated. There is no color, pictures, or examples on any of the pages. The majority of the activities are generic and lacking in creativity. I have not used one activity from the book yet. I still can't figure out how they managed to fill so many pages with such bland theme activities.

Product Description
Enter the world of film noir, a world of darkness, ambiguity, and moral corruption. Meet the cynical and obsessive heroes of film noir portrayed by actors like Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, James Cagney, Joan Crawford, and Bette Davis. You may encounter a gun-toting gangster, a femme fatale wrapped in fur, a detective with the brim of his hat turned down, or a desperate murderer lurking in the shadows of a doorway. It's a world we all know - the seedy underbelly of the American Dream, and every bit as much a part of our culture.

This wonderfully exhaustive text - tallying more than three hundred thousand words with hundreds of film stills and photos new to the work - distills everything about the movement into one volume from movies to stars to themes and motifs, and brings us up to date with contemporary contributions to the movement. Now completely revised, expanded, and redesigned, this classic pioneering work is the final word on a dark subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars film noir: the dark side of hollywood
Best film noir reference I have found or read, including the old edition of this book. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great subject, sloppy writing
I was exhilarated to discover that The Film Noir Encyclopedia had been revised and updated because this classic work is among the best reference books in the field of noir. Its offerings were plenty including a new section called "neo-noir." I eagerly cracked open the book seeking scintillating essays upon my favorite films written by those far more knowledgeable than myself.Instead, I found several factually incorrect essays marred by sloppy writing.

It is evident that the proofreaders and editors of this book were asleep at the wheel by failing to catch the multitude of factual errors contained in the essays.A far superior reference to film noir is The Film Noir Guide by Michael F. Keaney.Keaney's articles are smartly written and include a rating for each film. The Film Noir Encyclopedia's editors are undeniably the experts in the field thus my expectations were high but were quickly dashed by the bland essays written by lesser known talents who contributed essays to this book.Eddie Muller needs to write a reference book on this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic reference updated
I received my copy of the FNE 4th Edition last week.I was anxious to see what had been changed since the 1993 publication of the 3rd edition. They do seem to have addressed the plot synopses errors from previous edtions.

When I study the FNE 4th titles, they have now included some sci-fi titles - not sure how noir they really are: THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951), INVADERS FROM MARS (1953), THEM! (1954) + INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956) which was listed by Keaney (Film Noir Guide, 2003) & Selby (Dark City: The Film Noir, 2004).They have also added a number ofwesterns which had previously only been listed by Keaney:THE OX-BOW INCIDENT (1943), JOHNNY GUITAR (19540, RANCHO NOTORIOUS (1952), BLOOD ON THE MOON (1948) [also listed by Selby], DEVIL'S DOORWAY (1950) [also listed by Selby], NAKED SPUR (1954) [also listed by Duncan] (Film Noir: Films of Trust & Betrayal, 2003), RAMROD (1947) [also listed by Duncan]. Westerns not previously listed by the referenced sources are: DUEL IN THE SUN (1946) & I SHOT JESSE JAMES 1949). They also added the Ida Lupino directed film THE BIGAMIST (1953) to their list.

I don't have any real problem with these new titles, but I was very surprised at some that they dropped, such as MINISTRY OF FEAR (1944), THE TATTOOED STRANGER (1950), BLACK TUESDAY (1954) & THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962).Well - maybe I do have a problem - don't understand dropping a film like MINISTRY OF FEAR and then adding some very marginal titles instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing Noir
Overlook's Film Noir Encyclopedia Fills in the Shadows

Man, do I dig it when a plan comes together. When that plan wasn't even a plan to begin with and it comes together by accident, well, hell, that's even more diggable.

Take last Friday. I open my front door to find a package bearing Overlook's ultrafine Film Noir: The Encyclopedia ($45). I'd put in a request for a review copy some weeks back and had been itchy with anticipation ever since. And why wouldn't I be? I mean, I'm the kinda cat who's either watching film noir or attempting to re-create it in real life, and it's a cinch I'd wanna get my mitts on something that covers the subject in such depth.

Anyway, as I say, the book arrives. Thrill enough in itself for a shady guy like me. But then when I sashay out to my mailbox I find that the thrill has been compounded by Netflix. Yep, you guessed it, they'd kindly sent along some noir of their own. In fact, it was Where Danger Lives, one of the feistiest films in the genre. And it came backed by another dark little ditty called Tension.

Naturally I was psyched, doubly psyched, and keen to see if either of the above got any play in my new Encyclopedia. I shouldn't have questioned the premise. Not only are both flicks well covered in the book, but Danger gets its own six pages of duly explained sequence shots. That's right, shot-by-shots of "fugitive couple" Jeff Cameron (played by Robert Mitchum) and Margo Lannington (Faith Domergue) -- first before some roly-poly Alice in a back-alley burlesque; second, getting shaken down in a carny kingpin's office; and third, in four groupings, coming unhinged in some fleabag hotel room while they wait to make their escape to Mexico.

I tell ya, it was enough to make me flip my proverbial lid.

If this Encyclopedia would do all this for one of Mitch's lesser known noirs, what would it do for more famous flicks such as Crossfire, Macao, Out of the Past and The Racket?

Turns out, a lot. All four of the aforementioned are thoroughly covered as well, though not nearly as thoroughly as Danger. Perhaps that's because two of the four authors of the Encyclopedia handle Danger's "commentary." Or maybe it's just that the flick is held in higher esteem than I ever imagined. It was some kinda wonderful. And if noted noir ops Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward see fit to give the flick major play, who am I to argue?

Indeed, Silver and Ward, and their encyclopedic colleagues, James Ursini and Robert Porfirio, have their mitts on just about all the noir out there, from each Film Noir Reader that's been fit to print, to every flick ever to be reissued. In other words, these four have cornered the market on shadows and fog. And they're undoubtedly the most informed film noir historians working today.

Of course noir didn't begin or end with Mitchum, nor did it stop with the dissolution of black-and-white, and Film Noir: The Encyclopedia fills you in on what came before and after, be it back in noir's heyday or in its more recent neo-noir incarnations. And the book does so with wily eye for detail.

There's a good reason why noir continues to be watched and studied and celebrated: It takes us to places where but for the grace of a god each and every one of us could easily go. Dark, dreary and dangerous places, dig? -- where the risk of death is all too real and the thrill of life is ever present. That the form just happens to do all this with a certain style only makes it that much more compelling.

If you dig noir (and you should), then you'd do well to have this handbook by your side while you're digging it. Besides, even the loneliest walk alone needs a guide every once in a while.

4-0 out of 5 stars good start to teaching science to little ones
I purchased this book because I will be homeschooling my 1st grader. We have not started the school year yet but I am excited to use it. This book is just a basic intro to different parts of science and most pages have a small/easy experiment to do to reinforce the idea. I particuarly liked this book also because it did not cover evolution and we are creationists. It did not cover creation either...but it did hit several other interesting parts of science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
When we first received this book with our Second grade curriculum I was afraid it would be too basic, but we quickly learned how wonderful a resource these books are!My daughter soaked up this book like a sponge. She would ask to take it to bed with her, so she could read extra pages, and she jumped up and down with glee when I told her we would be buying more for next year. How many Science books can you say that about?

These are fantastic for a child's first introduction to Science, whether read aloud to Kindergarten-aged children, or given to older children for independent reading.Vocabulary words that are introduced throughout the book are listed in the back, if you chose to have your child work on memorization. The internet links that I have used, that are listed in the pages, are age-appropriate, and a lot of fun.I sometimes spend over and hour searching for sites to go along with what we've been learning! How wonderful to have it right there on the page!

We will continue to use these throughout Third grade, and once we get through these, I'm sure we'll be sticking with Usborne books.

Since the word "First" is in the title, I felt the need to explain that this is not exclusively a Kindergartner's Science book.My Second, going on Third grader adores them.I even learned some things from this book! There are several others in this series, and amazon.com has one or two on file that you can browse, if you choose.I recommend that you do, just in case you get them to find that your child already knows the information.

I, personally, cannot say enough good things about this book, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Science Nerds
My children (2 and 3) adore this book. Much of it is over their heads, but they learn a little more each time they read through it. There are some fabulous pictures!
This contents of this book are as follows:
What is science?
What scientists do
Our Universe
What is the Earth made of?
The seasons
Weather
Living things
Cells
Plants
Animals
Your body
Bones and muscles
What happens to food?
Your brain and senses
Atoms and molecules
Solids, liquids and gas
How materials change
Energy
Forces
Hot and cold
Gravity
Floating
Friction
Magnets
Light and color
Sound
Electricity
Computers
I give the book 4, not 5 stars for 2 reasons. The first is that much of the information is a repeat if you own other Usborne First Encyclopedias. The second is that they switch between using technical terms (coccyx, vertebrae, fibula, etc.) to non-technical terms (breast bone, finger bones, jaw bone) in the same photograph. I wish they would use the technical terms all the time, instead of hopping back and forth.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice and simple
Nice simple science book. It's great to have several reference books and this is a great simple one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not a comprehensive encyclopedia...
This is a well written, well illustrated book that provides a two page spread to discuss topics such as "What is Science?""Weather", "What Happens to Food?", "Energy", etc...It is a slim volume too, at 64 pages.I think it would be useful to introduce concepts to younger elementary students, and to review concepts with older students, perhaps asking them to elaborate on things they've studied more in-depth.

Also, every two-page spread refers you to one link on the Usborne website.I suppose this is to make sure the links stay current. However, once on the site you have to navigate a menu to find the book you want, or enter key words and page numbers. This is not the most user-friendly system, and the links provided are not very extensive - hardly worth the effort.A user would probably be better off just googling the topic. This should not deter you from purchasing the book, however, it stands quite well on its own (unless the idea of links was the main draw for you).

All in all a very solid 4 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome pricing!
The book was brand new with hardcover! The pricing was unbeatable! I would recommend this seller to everyone!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but still lacking
I bought this book looking for a complete reference book for herbals for my family.I have two young boys, and it has been very challenging finding at home remedies for them when they have been sick.I don't like making too many trips to the doctor's office if I don't have to, and I'm more of a hands off, let nature take it's course kinda gal. However, when the boys or my husband are sick, I like to have something on hand that's not the most potent OTC you can buy, or even the herbal mixes they sell at the health food stores unless I am certain that what's in there is going to do no harm, and actually help them. That being said, this book falls short of what I was looking for.The full color pages are nice, and there is quite a bit of information available on each herb represented. It is also nice that there is a special section on kids in the back which tells you what the proper dosage is for little ones. However, I am concerned to find very little information on contraindications or cautions, for instance, herbs you should never take if you are pregnant are not noted except in a small section in the back. Kind of an awkward way to read the book.Specifically, the herb Lobelia has no mention of the fact that many herbalists don't use it because large doses can be fatal...might be good to know, eh?The organization is weird for the lay person (by scientific name), and there are some commonly found herbs in herbal remedies I have bought before that are not listed in the book.Overall, maybe good to have on hand, but not the one reference book you must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
I was excited to get this book, but I was thrilled when I actually received it and got to look into it more. It explains how to use the herbs, store them, dry them, turn them to creams, tinctures, infusions, you name it! The other thing I LOVED was the photos of each herb and plant making it soooo much easier to accurately identify them while out hiking! Great book, definitely get it if you're starting out and wanting to learn more :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!
This has almost everything anyone would need to learn about herbs, how to fix, what to fix, and for what problem!I had to get one when I read my friend's copy.A must have for anyone wanting to learn about herbs, and application of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Herbal Encyclopedia I've come across!
I absolutely LOVE this book! I've had it for several years, and have given numerous copies away to friends and family including my own family doctor. My father was the one to first come across it in one of those discount book stores many years ago, and once I saw it I was hooked.

It is thourough and well written, and the lay-out is fantastic. It is so easy to read. Some of the reviews have complained about the fact that it is an alphabetical listing of plants/herbs as opposed to ailments/diseases, but this is what makes it great in my opinion. Often a particular plant has several therapeutic benefits, so it is nicer to read about one plant at a time (and less confusing, in my opinion). I disagree that it is difficult to find things, as the index also contains the common names of the plants as well as an index of ailments. Towards the back of the book there are ailment groups such as women's health problems and pregnancy, Cold & Flu, Allergies/hayfever, Digestive ailments/nausea, Respiratory ailments, and more, where you have a bunch of the most useful herbs for each group of ailments listed.

It's also a great book to sit down and flip through when you have a minute to read or rest. You can flip it open to a random page and read all about that particular plant. It's all very facinating and useful information. I use this book all the time. Whenever someone complains of pain or discomfort, I look it up in my trusted Herbal Encyclopedia and see if there's anything around the house I can use.

Some of the herbs I use more regularily are Camomile for stomach cramping, ground Ginger and Tumeric for nausea or stomach pain, Cardamon for gas, abdominal discomfort or if I need to burp, Rosemary for energy, Lemon juice in warm water for an internal shower of the digestive system.... to mention a few.

I also see a naturopath and take quite a few herbal mixes and supplements due to CFS, and being able to come home and look up why I'm taking each and every thing is great, and helps with compliance.

I'm actually looking for some new herbal books, as this one of course doesn't contain every possible medicinal plant (thought it comes close), but I haven't found one that comes close to this one. Highly recommend it to anyone. Especially great if you have children as it is a great reference guide when someone isn't feeling well. Why use synthetic drugs when there is an effective yet gentle natural alternative! A total joy to read and always useful! Definitely 5 stars. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Review of Encyclopedia
This book is okay for learning about the types of challenges a teacher may encounter. However, as big as the book is, and as expensive as it is, it does not offer any substantive guidance on how a teacher should remedy the issues. The major formula used is track the students behavior and let the student know that you are tracking. To me, this is an obvious practice for any educator, but it is only part of the equation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative.
The Disneyland Encyclopedia is as enjoyable to read as it is informative. It's a perfect reference guide for anyone who is even mildly interested in the history of "The Happiest Place On Earth."

I do wish that the book included a section that detailed the park's conception and construction, as well as a chronological time-line or some sort of chronological section that also offered more of a general history of the park aside from the attractions. The book also only includes photos the author personally took during a 2007 trip to the park, so expect to search online for images of the many now-closed attractions that you will learn about in this book.

That being said, what the book does, it does very well. It will make you wish you could go back and experience the park as it was. If you visit Disneyland after reading this book, you'll be able to get a good mental picture of how the park evolved through the many decades of change and renovation. Don't let the words "Unofficial and unauthorized" scare you off. Chris Strodder has brilliantly put together an informative, yet approachable book that's as good, or possibly even better than any "official" guide you would expect from Disney.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be Better
Although the book does have lots of information about all the rides and restaurants, and events,I found that it was not very specific or detailed. Therestaurants had no menu or reviews on the food quality. It only gave a brief description about the restaurant. The rides had no approximate wait times or individual reviews about each ride. The book does not include information about the history of the corn dogs or any other special mickey pretzels and treats in the park, nor does it include any information about the deaths that have occured in the park. I liked the book, but felt that it lacked lot of important facts and informationand could've been written better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun read
My wife got this for me before we went to Disneyland last year and it was really interesting while we were on vacation. After we returned home I found myself still picking it up and looking through it to find interesting facts.
I can easily use it to look up anything I hear about in relation to Disneyland. If you are a fan of the Disney parks this is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic!
I am a big fan of Disneyland and have been there many, many time. Therefore I thought I knew alot about Disneyland and I still learned so much from this book.Easy reference, easy to navigate through. What is great about this book is that it talks about rides that are no longer around. It talks about the Disneyland that could have been, as well as enfluencial people and Disney "terms".I highly recommend this book to every new and long time fan.Should be a part of every Disney library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information
This is not a good read if your looking for a story. This is an encyclopedia. I love the format of this book there are two way to look up information. First is by name if you know what the name is second is by location you can look at the front of the book and look at park maps and it will tell you what has ever been there and the names so you can look it up in to the book so its good to take to the park or read at your house. I love to see the changes that the park has had and love to read about them. BUY THIS BOOK. Happy 54th Disneyland. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best comprehensive introduction to language--we'd love a new edition!
Based on this and his many other excellent books, David Crystal is a world heritage treasure! This book provides a stimulating introduction to language in a comprehensive way that I have found nowhere else. However, since its 1997 publication date there are exciting new developments in understanding language and its origins, including language acquisition, neurolinguistics, and semantics. We would love a new edition and hope the marvelous author has nothing else to do for the foreseeable future! Please convince him, Cambridge University Press!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unmatched linguistic compendium
Everything that you could ever have wanted to know about the way language works is in here (along with many other things that you probably had never even thought of). From the minds ability to comprehend certain sights and sounds as forms of communication and how it deciphers them to writing styles, changes and progression in languages and grammatical structures and nuances in voice level and tone used to alter understanding of a particular syllable, this book's got it all. I have to confess to being overawed when I first opened the book and then marvelling at the detail contained therein. Be warned though, this book is not for beginners in any field of study. Those with a strong interest in linguistics though should definitely invest in this treasure. There's so much in here it's staggering.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent overview of language
David Crystal's Encylcopedia of Language is an excellent and readable book for lay-people like myself. I often come to it for information on a particular language-related question, or else I'll just open it up at random and see where I land.

There are plenty of diagrams and coloured pictures throughout, as well and quite a few interesting stories placed in vignettes.

As other reveiwers have pointed out, a huge range of topics are included here. I'm yet to find an aspect of language that hasn't been covered in some way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brief comment
This book is a linguaphile and language lover's delight, to read or just to browse like a coffee table book. It covers just about every major topic in the study of language you can think of, from traditional classical and comparative philology and linguistics to modern developmental and neurological studies of language.

The book is comprised of 11 major sections and 65 smaller sections, with 8 appendices devoted to various topics, and there is an extensive glossary of linguistic terms as well as a table giving essential information about almost 1000 of the world's languages. Although a scholarly book, it's well written and Crystal never gets overly pedantic or dry. This is no doubt one of the most comprehensive and detailed compendia of information for the general reader about the subject of language ever written.

After reading this, you'll be more than ready to tackle a formal or more technical introductory text in linguistics, if you want to continue your studies. If you do, I highly recommend David Lyons's classic, Introduction to Theoretical Linguistics, now out of print but worth getting if you can find a used copy. If you can't find that there are several other recent texts that are quite good. But if you decide to stick with this book, you'll still have learned a lot. Whichever way you decide, good luck and happy reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good ideas
I am a begginner in crazy quilt, and this book helps me how to start and do a project. Very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent approach for beginning crazy quilters
Thanks to the positive reviews seen here, I ordered this book and have been very pleased with it. I do have a couple of other books showing crazy quilt stitches, but this one is by far the easiest to understand. The most helpful feature of this book is that it has very simple diagrams that are somewhat like dance step diagrams: showing the stitch numbered with 1-2-3 etc. and saying "come up at 1, go down at 2, come up at 3." As a result I was able to master several stitches that I had not been able to learn from other books. This may seem silly, but I have always had trouble with French knots--probably the most basic stitch there is. I learned from this book that my problem was that I was not holding the tension properly. That right there was worth the price of the book to me. My French knots look great now!

Additionally, there is a small section on ribbon embroidery which covers several of the basic ribbon embroidery stitches in the same manner, which enabled me to embroider a basket of flowers very similar to the one in the lower left corner of the cover. Having previously managed a total of two uneven ribbon roses using another book on ribbon embroidery, I was extremely pleased with my results!

Perhaps the second most helpful feature of this book is the demonstration of combining stitches. Illustrations and the photos offer a great many examples of how to combine two or three of the basic stitches to make completely different effects. I've used these examples to learn with, and they have helped to inspire me to expand on them with my own ideas.

A truly advanced embroiderer would probably not benefit very much from this book, which I would say is intended for the beginning crazy quilter and beginning-to-intermediate embroiderer. In that regard perhaps the title is a little misleading. If you are really looking for a book that covers virtually every stitch known to man, you want Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches. But you will not find the diagrams in that book as easy to understand as the ones in this book. So if you want to learn basic embroidery stitches and how to combine them easily to great effect, this book is an excellent choice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Encycloopedia of Crazy Quilt Stitches
This is a wonderful soft covered book full of different kinds of embroidery stitches for those who love to hand sew. I bought the book for my daughter who loves my book and is always borrowing it. However, the book was supposed to be new. It had slightly worn edges and a bit of a tear on the spine. So I was disappointed as it's a birthday gift. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good book with bad ink
This book is very good in contents, my son love it. But it emits an obvious chemical smell. I am afraid that this chemical will damage my son's health, so I decide to return it to the store.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise No Math and Illustrative
I am an engineer and a volunteer tutor in science and mathematics for grade 8-9 students. This is one of the best books covering the essential scientific concepts in non mathematical form that I have used which also makes it great book to supplement mathematically oriented physical science text even at the first year college level. It covers Physics (as Force, Motion, Energy, Light and Electricity) Chemistry, Biology and the Natural sciences. It's short on human biology, but one must grasp the essence of animal biology which is common first. Each section is well organized by topic with a concise paragraph supported by plenty of colored illustration. Furthermore it has some simple examples of where the concept is used in real life or a supporting experiment that one can perform at home. Well dome DK. This is an encyclopedia geared for young adolescents or any one with a curious mind. Therefore it requires some guidance in selecting topics, however it is sufficiently well organized that one you can pick a section i.e. earth science and follow page after page.

4-0 out of 5 stars DK Encyclopedia of Science
This is a big book, full of great information.I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include much information regarding sub-categories of science like microbiology, and didn't even have a section on Physics! It is, however, filled with tons of info. on biology and chemistry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, with one reservation
I bought the book for my wife to increase her knowledge of science. It's somewhat directed at adolescents, but it's immensely useful for anyone who only learned science through many of our public schools. The explanations are concise, clear, and often go into the history of science, which I believe is essential. It hits all areas of science and shows how they tie into one another. My only complaint in what I've seen is the treatment of global warming. The authors present this as scientific fact that the earth is warming according to computer models and will increase greatly in the coming years. They fail to mention that the models are full of flaws and have had an unacceptably low predictive validity, and they also do not mention that a very large number of climatologists completely or largely reject the hypothesis. As a science book, they should stick to science, and the hypothesis of man-made global warming is more about the corruption of the scientific process with money than it is true science. ...
