5-0 out of 5 stars OMG LOVE IT!!!
This book has everything could possibly want in it. With a little tweeking they are perfect to make your own!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference for all kinds magical arts
This is a very interesting book. You will find literally all kinds of magic, magic to help you sleep better, love, spells, to boost physic abilities, spells for your pets, healing spells, beauty spells etc. My one problem with this book is that there are sections on practcing black/dark arts ie hexing someone, binding, curse, etc. Which I personally do not agree with that. I would have given her 5 starts actually. This book is not suitable for the young and she even mentions this in her first pages in bold that this book is not intended for children. Also many of the spells are taken from old traditionals based on cultural/ religious practices, furthermore some spells are more based on superstitious practics, after all they are taken form 5000 years of practice. All in all a good reference book, you wont find any like this out there especially if you are interested in traditional spells. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Superior book for all dog lovers
This is a great book for a new dog owner or for those who are considering a particular breed of dog. The book reviews 350 different breeds. The breeds are presented in brief articles with pictures. Once you have found a breed your interested in it would then be best to seek more detailed information online or from a breed book . I am sure that this was the intent of the author.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a 'reveiw' but....
This more of a comment, but anyway:

I would just like to say that there are more complete books out there such the book "The World Atals of Dog Breeds".
It has AKC, non-AKC, rare, etc. breeds in it. It doesn't paticularly have 'Tiger Dogs' or 'Swedish Gray Dogs', but, they more than likely have alternate names possibly unknown to the authors. For example: Most people in the USA know Papillions as, well, Papillions; but over in Europe, they are commonly known as 'Continental Toy Spaniels'. Another Example: Likewise in the USA people know those moustached dogs, Schnauzers, by that common and, most likely, well known name; But across the ocean, in Germany, they are, to the best of my knowledge, commonly known as Riesenschauzers. The German word(obviously)for "Giant moustache"
(Riesen = Giant; Schnauzer = Moustache).

Dog Lover Kid (And, yes, I am a kid; I know quite a bit about dogs [I don't mean to brag])

P. S. Please excuse the rating, had to put something so I could share my information! I would reccomend this book mainly as extra reference material to accompany the book listed above, my opinion is formed by what I saw looking at the book online. I hope this information will be helpful. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to browse
Great resource for all dog lovers.I got this for my grown daughter because she was always borrowing mine. It's concise, and has exceptional photos of all breeds, as well as descriptive synopses of behaviors, tendencies and the like.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This is the perfect 'coffee table book'. Any dog lover will have a hard time putting this book down.....and you'll find yourself wanting a dog (or another dog) when you do. The images are stunning and the information about each breed is detailed. It's the perfect book to have in your home - it can be appreciated and enjoyed by both old and young.

THE DEFINITIVE REFERENCE GUIDE TO A SPACE FANTASY PHENOMENON

The Star Wars universe, much like our own, is constantly expanding. In the ten years since the publication of the Star Wars Encyclopedia, a lot has happened in that galaxy far, far away: four new feature films, a host of official original novels, comics, video games, and more. Now, thirty years of information on all things Star Wars–ranging from science and technology to history and geography, culture and biography to ecology and cosmology–has been supplemented with an entire decade’s worth of all-new material. Abundantly illustrated with full-color artwork and photos, and now in a new three-volume edition to accommodate its wealth of detailed entries, the Star Wars Encyclopedia encompasses the full measure of George Lucas’s creation.

Here’s just a sampling of what’s inside:
• character portraits of both the renowned (Luke Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Darth Vader) and the obscure (Tnun Bdu, Tycho Celchu, Bib Fortuna)
• the natives and customs of planets as diverse as Tatooine and Hoth, Dagobah and Kashyyyk
• the rituals, secrets, and traditions of Jedi Knights and Sith Lords
• a timeline of major events in Star Wars history, from the Clone Wars and the inception of the Empire to the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the invasion of the monstrous Yuuzhan Vong

Scrupulously researched and written by leading authorities Stephen J. Sansweet, Pablo Hidalgo, Bob Vitas, and Daniel Wallace, this landmark work is the must-have centerpiece of every Star Wars library.Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, December 2008: Updated for the first time in 10 years, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia is the closest fans will come to having access to the great Holocron from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Housed in a sturdy slipcase, the illustrated, three-volume hardcover set holds an A-Z overview of all things Star Wars--from the original trilogy and the prequels to the expanded universe of novels, comics, cartoons, and video games. Most entries on the three-column pages garner a few sentences while core characters and fan favorites like the family Fett spill over to multiple pages of data. As fans know, nearly everyone who appeared onscreen in the films has gone on to receive an entire backstory, but even die-hard fans will delight in the discoveries found on every page. Random, Magic 8 Ball-style browsing brought up head-scratchers like Malarian Alliance, Traest Kre'fey, Rybet, Lieutenant Colf, Guun Han Saresh, bruise-leech crawler, and Ion Alley. And did you know that the bug-eyed alien "dog" in Jabba's palace on Tatooine had a name--"Bubo"--and was in fact a spy and an assassin? According to Yoda, "size matters not," but this 10-pound box set will make a welcome addition to the serious Star Wars fan's bookshelf. --Brad Thomas Parsons ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy paper quality too bad
Too bad the paper quality is not that great plus i think its lots of internet informatie put into a book: small letters, small pictures and lots of unusefull information. Its not my cup of tea.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Anything And Everything Star Wars
If it's not in here it's probably not in Star Wars, either in the movies or the massive extended universe. This encyclopedia covers almost every conceivable person, place and thing in the Star Wars universe. I would have liked a prettier presentation of each entry, but really with the amount of material covered it would have weighed a ton, instead of half a ton. Yes, this tome is heavy, but heavy with Star Wars goodness. If you're a hardcore fan this is a must-have item.

5-0 out of 5 stars A WEALTH OF INFORMATION
This encyclopedia set contains a wealth of information.Literally almost anything you could want to know about is in here.It makes a great read and an excellent addition to your Star Wars literature collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I tough at first time
This "Encyclopaedia" of Star Wars is not what I though I was buying at first time. Even when is a compendium of information, it could be categorized as "Dictionary of terms". Inside the three volumes, there is a lot of information without chronological order as a normal encyclopaedia is organized (e.g. Start with Roman culture and finished with Industrial Revolution); instead, there is a bunch of names ordered alphabetically of, dear I said this, characters that I never hear before.

I purchase this encyclopaedia after I visited the "Star Wars Exhibition" in Santiago, Chile, and I realized that there is not available information for such a great film.

If you are looking for a compendium of well-organized information starting from Episode I (Tattooine, Gungans and so on) until Episode 6 (Ewoks, Endor, etc.) but you have no interest about defected senators, dark sith lords, renegades, etc., this encyclopaedia is NOT what you want.

On the contrary, If you are looking for definitions of parallel characters, Jedis, Sith's, Gungans, etc., this book is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grateful Person
Excellent compilation of the Star Wars World.Even items I could not remember or even seen before are in the three volume set. Thanks! ... Read more

Updated with the latest information on canine breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, this lavishly illustrated volume is a treasure house of information for dog lovers, owners, breeders, and prospective buyers. It begins with a detailed discussion of breed evolution, focusing on the physical and behavioral traits that distinguish one canine breed from another. The book’s main section profiles more than 150 breeds, arranged in the general categories specified by the AKC—Sporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group. Each profile tells how and why the breed was developed, and how selection to perpetuate specific traits affects a dog’s suitability as a pet. Advice for prospective dog owners will help them be sure they are choosing a breed that is compatible with their own situation and needs. They will also find information on each breed’s vulnerability to specific health problems, longevity, exercise needs, compatibility with children, and much more. I was very pleased with the quick responce and the excellent condition of the books. I would recommend this seller to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing the "know-how" to picking the dog for you!
I really thought this book was a wonderful tool. I'm a beginner when it comes to dog breeds and this book was perfect. I could walk through the pages and read the specific information I wanted and mark the page if I liked the breed, then come back to read the full review on each of the breeds I had marked. The book is separated by sizes in a sense, hunting breeds, toy breeds, miniatures and so on. I loved it. The book really gave me a feel for what my family needed. We successfully chose a dog too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
My 9 year old daughter loves this book. The pictures are great and the info box about every dog breed that comes along with text gives them a quick overview.
Very good book for that age.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best dog breed books there is...
I purchased this book for a class I took on all the different dog breeds in vet school. Although this book did not have every single breed we covered, it had the most information, pictures, and diagrams for the breed standards in each dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dog Book
One of the best dog breed books around with perhaps the best illustrations. This book not only contains the AKC breed information but does it more comprehensively.Instead of limiting itself to size descriptions of breeds by either height or by weight, so often done in AKC breed standards, this book gives an average height and weight range for each of the breeds.Great overall characteristic descriptions such as temperament, upkeep, genetic health problems, and form and function. Many highly illustrated dog books have great pictures of some breeds and unflattering ones of other breeds. The Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds has consistently beautiful pictures throughout.
If you are more interested in adopting one of the lonely little All Americans out there in shelters, this is a fun way to gather information about the heritage and personality that make up that little guy's background. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Its ALMOST super!
I finally broke down and bought this after hemming and hawing for a good month and I'm glad I did!I could spend large chunks of the day getting lost in it....BUT there are some errors on the years indicated for certain issues....had to knock a star off for that, but don't let that stop you from getting this! Some of the reprinted covers take me back and some things I just plum forgot remind me of why I love the mythos os Superman!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought this as a gift
I bought this book as a gift for a true superman aficionado. It was very well received.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Off The Daily Planet Presses!
Before I say anything else, yes, this is an amazing book, and yes, you will want to buy it.

With regard to The Essential Batman Encyclopedia and how this book compares, the first thing I noticed is how much more massive TESE is compared to its Bat-counterpart. This absolutely dwarfs the Batman book. It has 120 more pages, and is vastly more detailed. The important entries in the Superman volume are longer and much more in depth than in the TEBE. For example: TEBE's entry for The Joker is 5 pages long. TESE's entry for Lex Luthor is 9 pages. TEBE's entry for Gotham City is 4 pages (including a full page illustration), the entry for Metropolis in this book is *12* pages. So you are talking about a much more impressive volume here. The only area I would give TEBE the nod in is in the artwork, especially the color sections. The art is much better in the Batman Encyclopedia.

The entries for all of the major characters and events in Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman's life are here in extraordinary detail. As I mentioned earlier, the entry for Metropolis is astounding. With sections covering its history, events, culture, etc. There are similarly detailed entries for Krypton, Lois, Lex, Jimmy, Daily Planet, Fortress of Solitude, anything you can think of. It really does feel like you are in Metropolis reading this book.

The artwork chosen is decent. There are 70 years of panels to select from, and there appears to be a nice variety. There are selections in the book I thought were bad. For example, the gorgeous classic cover of Superman #233, with Supes breaking the Kryptonite chains, is juxtaposed with a newer version of him in the same pose. But the new Kryptonite-breaking piece looks like crap, and is larger than the original. Why did it even need to be there when you already had the cover for #233? The two 16-page color sections leave a lot to be desired. Sometimes it seems like they make their selections by pulling them out of a hat. I would have liked to see John Byrne dominate this book like Jim Lee did for TEBE, but that's just fantasy talk.

Finally, I have to mention the omissions. When a horrible newer character like Gorgeous Gilly gets an entry and a panel of artwork, I can't help myself from wondering why other more established characters were left out. Where's Booster Gold? I know for a fact Booster and Supes had significant interactions. They even had a crossover back in the day. Gold was based in Metropolis, his comic referenced Superman constantly. That is a glaring omission. Other omissions include: Dr. Fate, Kilowog, and the Green Lantern Corps, among others.

I'm giving The Essential Superman Encyclopedia 4 and a half Stars. I can't give it 5 Stars in good faith with all of the omissions. But most people will consider this a 5 Star book. This is a fabulous book. Fans of comics will adore this. And if you own the 2008 Batman volume, you need this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
This book is filled with beautiful pictures and amazing facts. As a homeschooling mother beginning our study of the ancients, it's a must have!I am very pleased with this purchase. The ONLY complaint I have: What about ancient China?!?!?!?!?!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource!
There are two names in English publishing that assure a quality product for children (and adults): DK Eyewitness and Usborne. After Usborne added internet links, they raised their ante on the value of their books. "The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of the Ancient World" is a fantastic resource for study of the civilizations of the Ancient World: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

For each civilization there are sections on history, government, everyday life, religion, entertainment, maps, and many more topics. At the end of each unit is a fact-finder specific for each civilization: rulers, gods/goddesses, laws, and the like.

The book is not just words. Illustrations, graphs, photographs make each page attractive and educational. For example, seeing for the first time an illustration of the size of the statue of Athena in the Parthenon just takes one's breath away. On the next page are illustrations of prayer positions of supplicants. I've seen each pose before in movies and documentaries and had no idea of the meaning.

Fabulous tidbits of information fill each page. On a page of a photograph of part of Hadrian's Wall separating England from Scotland (an attempt to keep the Scots in their land and out of England) is the brave story of Boudicca and her uprising against Rome.

To really appreciate this rich resource, you need to have it in hand and page through, stopping to read items of interest. Then keep it nearby to take out and read to enhance your own personal education. Very highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any Home Library!
This book is a GREAT resource for your family. Your kids will love the pictures and facts scattered throughout the pages. It is well organized, colorful, and full of information. My kids are 9, 8, and 6 and have all benefitted from having this book at home. This book makes reading assignments fun! Great for homsechoolers, and the internet links are terrific. Even as an adult, I have enjoyed reviewing the stuff I learned when I was in school as a child.

The only downside to this book is that some of the pictures cover the page numbers. This makes it a little hard to find a certain page because this sometimes occurs for several pages in a row.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed.
I am teaching my children ancient history and needed something to give my curriculum some meat. This book does it! Very thorough (100 pages on Egypt), colorful, covers concepts such as government, religion, architecture, and daily life for each civilization. Even mentions a few empires other books don't bother to bring up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for the history students library
Not only does this Encyclopedia look impressive on the bookshelf, but it is quite impressive in content as well. On opening this 400 page hard covered book, it oozes tactfully and beautifully layed out illustrations and photographs from start to finish.
This Encyclopedia covers the Mesopotamian World, Ancient Egypt, Ancient, Archaic and Classical Greece and the Roman World giving you historical background along with insight to the every day life that one may of experienced in that time. For Example, in covering Ancient Rome, the major headings are Early Rome, The Roman Republic, the Roman Empire, Everyday Life, The End of Empire, The Roman Word factfinder etc.
If you want to look further into a topic that is covered in this Encyclopedia, it does add an internet link on the same page of that topic so you aren't scouring the back trying to find the link.
My only dissapointment with this Encyclopedia is that it does not cover Ancient China and other ancient civilisations. When I looked at the title of this Encyclopedia, I just presumed that they would be covered, but not so.
Other than this, this is a very user friendly Encyclopedia and glad it is in my home library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of information
I first saw this book at a heath food store and knew I wanted
it.It is full of information and has an easy to find system if you
are looking for a particular herb.

5-0 out of 5 stars herbal solutions for health issues
Excellent book from a very qualified writer. I have met him and he has a very productive practise. He was the very first distributor of Natures Sunshine products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Herb Information Out There!
I bought this book 15 years ago and have used the heck out of it!It finally fell apart --- and when I found it with the spiral bound cover,I just knew Ihad to have it!I don't want to ever be without this book and its invaluable information! Its such a great price as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super vendor, product as described, flawless transaction
Book is spiral bound - easy to use, well laid out for each herb, aka names are given, uses of each herb are alphabetically laid out, and main uses are CAPITALIZED, at a glance, information is accessible and easy to understand.I have already used this book over and over.Other reviewers are right, this is the best handy herb book.Definitely the spiral bound version is the one to get.Vendor was great, flawless transaction.Anybody interested in natural things should GO SEE THE MOVIE FOOD INC., real eye opener. Apparently, only showing in one theater in Las Vegas (Red Rock), rumor is there are powers to be trying to yank this movie before too many people see the truth behind the food we put on our tables.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, With Reservations
I like this book very much. The layout is easy to read and understand.

My only reservation is that it leaves out some commonly used herbs, and it has not been updated at all since 1995.

This is my second copy, hopefully this spiral bound one will fare better than the bound one I bought in 1995 that is ready to fall apart due to subpar construction.

I recommend the book. I look at it as a supplemental book though...... as it's not complete. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
This book is hard to find. The major bookstores were always out or didn't carry it at all.Not only did I find it on Amazon, the price was good, and the shipping was fast!Very pleased!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book review
This book is written for the younger set, but I found myself reading and enjoying it as an adult.I will probably get this out when the grandkids come for a visit. It gives a lot for it low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Disney Autograph Book
I purchased two of these, one for each of my girls, for our first Disney vacation. This book has ALL the characters you can find at Disney and more! They are a little heavy so I carried them in the family backpack until we came to a character. We have enjoyed looking back at the autographs and reading about the characters!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have for Disney World visitors
In preparation for our fourth trip to Disney World in four years with 2 girls under the age of 7, I decided to look for an alternative to the costly autograph books sold in the park.I found this book based on a recommendation on a Disney web site and decided to give it a try.I HIGHLY recommend this for any family who will be collecting autographs while at Disney World (and if you have kids who want to meet the characters, this means you). This book has every character you will meet with plenty of room for them to sign their name and, if you so desire, you can get creative with attaching your own pictures with the characters using scrapbooking supplies. These books fulfilled our need to have something to sign, saved us money because it is less expensive than the autograph books sold in the parks (we were buying two of those per child per trip), and provided my kids with a great source of entertainment. We found the girls huddled together reviewing the characters, who they had met and who they wanted to meet, on bus rides, when waiting to be seated for dinner and when winding down at the end of a long and exciting day. We'll keep these forever. And, by the way, they don't sell these in the parks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
My 6 year old loves this book!It has alot more characters than the older additon. ... Read more

With today's emphasis on fast-moving technology, as well as increasing pressure to meet the testing standards of science and math in the classroom, the need to grasp key scientific principles has never been greater. The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia is the one reference that includes all of the information students need to know in today's fast-paced world. Clearly written and illustrated articles provide in-depth insight and concise authoritative information. An impressive reference section at the end of the book contains minibiographies of famous scientists, plus an illustrated time line of key inventions and discoveries. Arranged thematically into ten chapters, with reference summaries at the end of each chapter and a full index, the encyclopedia does more than merely provide facts about science and technology—it helps the reader think for him or herself, develop an enquiring mind, pose challenging questions, and explore new topics. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and a good reference book
We purchased this book to use as a reference for homeschooling. It is a good reference book to get a glimpse of information on many different topics. The illustrations are beautiful.

The downside to this book is that it treats evolution as a fact.Evolution is a theory that has yet to be proven. That is why I gave it only 2 stars. So if the text treats something unproven as a fact, it causes me to wonder if everything else in the book is really proven to be true.

I have no problem with evolutionary content. But I do have a problem when it is treated as fact instead of theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the layout
I purchased this book because it is recommeneded in The Well Trained Mind.We will be using it in our home school next year. I love that it is laid out by subject area.It seems to be the perfect amount of information for elementary education.Lots of full color pictures and drawings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia
The book has wonderful pictures and graphics. However - each subject is merely glanced over with little in depth coverage. It isn't very useful as a study resource unless you like to look at pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschoolers need this book
For homeschooling (and indeed for any child who loves to learn), there are two names to look out for: Kingfisher and Usborne. Like the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, the Science Encyclopedia forms a core study guide for homeschoolers. The book is divided into ten main sections, which gives you the option of concentrating on a broad topic, and picking out individual subjects within that topic. So there are 48 pages under 'Planet Earth' for example, and each subject is a manageable one or two pages long. That's perfect for the homeschooling family - the subjects are never too long to become tedious, but if your child wants to learn more, pick out another equally manageable subject and extend that day's science lesson a little.

I've always agreed with the adage 'a picture paints a thousand words', and the illustrations in this book are first class. Kingfisher has really invested money and effort into these pictures, and they bring to life subjects which might otherwise be difficult to grasp. Science can be difficult to teach at home, partly because it's difficult and expensive to buy apparatus, chemicals, etc. So illustrations are key to understanding what would happen if you did the experiment yourself. I'm not saying that this is a substitute for practical work, but it's the best you will get without getting hands-on.

If you DO have the equipment (and in some cases you don't need much - for resonance find a glass and a wet finger!) the pictures enhance the learning experience.

Like all encyclopedias of its type, realistically you should not expect to learn everything there is to know about the whole of science, but you really shouldn't be expecting that from a single volume. What you get here is the basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology, and other branches of science. These are the key to an understanding of the way science works.

If you're using this book as part of the 'Well Trained Mind' homeschooling method (and if you haven't heard of it, look it up on Amazon), this will serve your children well. I've not looked at other methods, but I can't imagine that you would want to overlook the book whatever route you take.

Every 1 or 2-page subject should have your children (and you!) wanting to do further reading, which is what homeschooling is all about - giving them an appetite for learning.

I mentioned Usborne, and their Science Encyclopedia is also a quality publication, which has a 'see for yourself' section in each subject - usually a simple experiment to complement the topic. Ideally you'd use both books together (the Kingfisher is 100 pages longer and thus covers more areas), and you will by no means be disappointed with either.

I can't rate this book highly enough - as a general one-volume science book, it's hard to beat.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty book, marginally acceptable science, appalling writing
This book only gets two stars because of the gorgeousness of the pictures. The actual science content is shoddy, and the writing is horrific.Don't be fooled:Kingfisher is owned by a public school curriculum company, and it shares all the same flaws that a text book has.

Bitterly disappointing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition Useless
Getting around in the Kindle Edition of this book is next to impossible.I feel that I completely wasted my money.I won't buy another Kindle reference book unless its downloadable in a format, such as PDF, that I can search for material. The purpose of the Kindle purchase was to eliminate the lugging of multiple books out to my garden this spring. Now I find it is best suited for "brain candy" books LOL.If I am doing something wrong, I don't know what it is and would welcome input.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative for new gardeners
This book has alot of information for beginning, as well as experienced gardeners. Very informative from pest control to garden and flower beds, to harvesting and planting just about anything. Great resource book.

5-0 out of 5 stars thorough
I found the earlier edition of this book to be the most thorough of the gardening books I have collected. It goes into greater depth. For example, it was one of the few general gardening books (as opposed to one on just berries) which mentioned the existence of June-bearing and everbearing strawberry plants, and the advantages and disadvantage of each.I look forward to getting this updated edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not encyclopedic, in my opinion
I've enjoyed most of the other books in this series, so perhaps my expectations were high. This book is really just not that helpful.Partly the problem is the "encyclopedic" organization. The book is (obviously) arranged alphabetically.Fine - but then the index and TOC are useless additions of wasted paper that serve no real function, because hey - everything is alphabetical! The index is worthless for cross-referencing.Oddly, some things are alphabetical by scientific name, others by general name, etc. Another reviewer mentioned it was good for general reading.I didn't feel it was readable this way at all, but I wasn't expecting to.It really is organized as an "encyclopedia" and more conducive to looking up specific items. But when you look something up, the information itself is just not that useful. As a beginner to intermediate gardener, I was underwhelmed with the depth of the info - and at 700+ pages, you'd think there would be a lot of information! There are also about a half-dozen small black and white illustrations in the entire book.
Overall - it's okay, but not worth the money or the wasted trees....

5-0 out of 5 stars A standard for every organic gardener
This is an excellent reference book that I find myself constantly using.Sometimes it is in reference to a specific problem, other times, I just find it interesting to read. Most often, I will pick it up to look something specific up and then realize that 30 minutes has gone by because I have found other interesting things to read.Great, reliable, organized well, and lots of great ideas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I'm always turning to this great book for information on how to store different foods and also how they benefit my health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have only read the first section and I am already impressed by this book.It is clear and concise and yet very informative. This is a must for anyone starting out on a holistic journey as well as those farther down the path.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods
I find this a wonderful asset to my reference books. I see foods as medicine and this is helpful to help find answers to those questions looking to meet specific needs, along side my "RX for Nutritional Healing"Rx prescription for cooking and dietary wellness. I also appreciate the other notes added for history and such, I would encourage this for anyone's library that wants to find nutritional references (Nutritional Highlights and Health benefits sections) to meet specific needs. Also tells you how to select, store and prepare, tips for preparing and safety. A large selection of fruits and vegetables and information I have not found in other sources. Plus some herbs and spices and even meats. Some health issues are also addressed. The beginning of the book also expounds on various nutrients and specific foods known to have them, so if you see you need B-1 (Thiamine) you will find a good size list of specific foods with that particular nutrient. If I were to teach a health and nutrition class, I would recommend this book for continual references, or anyone interested in using food as their medicine. Author also has good notes on his own references, so if you want to research something further you could have a good spring board to build from.
My personal desire for this book was for the extensive information on the fruits and vegetables, that stood above other references (or complimented) I have. The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Foods Bible
This is my go-to reference for everyday healthy eating and nutritional information and for ideas on how to address and treat common health ailments. I love Naturopathic Physicians and consider them more caring, trustworthy, knowledgeable, and empowering than conventional MDs. I was raised in a household with an emphasis on holistic approaches to treating sickness, eating wholesome foods, and focusing on prevention, based on traditional knowledge from a mother who disapproves of the American way of life (diet, lifestyle, etc)-- and have been all the healthier because of her introduction to naturopathy and living holistically. Thanks to the authors for this wonderful and extremely informative book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nonsense!
I am just starting this book its a requirement for the school that I am attending. In the book he talks about Weston Price, and how cultures that consumed traditional diets containing whole, unprocessed foods had low rates of chronic disease. Then he goes on to recommend low-fat dairy which is homogenized and pasteurized. What really bothers me is that he recommends soy bacon, soy sausage, and soy hot dogs. I don't know about you but don't those sound like highly processed foods? He also recommends canola oil. This guy is a joke! ... Read more

Do You Know...

  • where the legend of a cat's nine lives comes from?

  • why "mama" is a word understood in nearly all languages?

  • how the custom of kissing began?

  • whether there really was a female pope?

  • why Cinderella's glass slipper was so important to the Prince?

The answers to these and countless other intriguing questions are given in this compulsively readable, feminist encyclopedia. Twenty-five years in preparation, this unique, comprehensive sourcebook focuses on mythology anthropology, religion, and sexuality to uncover precisely what other encyclopedias leave out or misrepresent. The Woman's Encyclopedia presents the fascinating stories behind word origins, legends, superstitions, and customs. A browser's delight and an indispensable resource, it offers 1,350 entries on magic, witchcraft, fairies, elves, giants, goddesses, gods, and psychological anomalies such as demonic possession; the mystical meanings of sun, moon, earth, sea, time, and space; ideas of the soul, reincarnation, creation and doomsday; ancient and modern attitudes toward sex, prostitution, romance, rape, warfare, death and sin, and more.

Tracing these concepts to their prepatriarchal origins, Barbara G. Walker explores a "thousand hidden pockets of history and custom in addition to the valuable material recovered by archaeologists, orientalists, and other scholars."

Not only a compendium of fascinating lore and scholarship, The Woman's Encyclopedia is a revolutionary book that offers a rare opportunity for both women and men to see our cultural heritage in a fresh light, and draw upon the past for a more humane future.Amazon.com Review
This fascinating, scholarly hodgepodge spotlights the feministunderpinnings of myth, religion, and culture. Before being lionized aszaftig Norse angels who guided strong warriors to Valhalla,Valkyries may have offered rebirth throughcannibalization. "Little Red Riding Hood" was based onDiana, goddess of the hunt. Marriage was once considered a sin, not asacred union: St. Bernard once proclaimed "it was easier for aman to bring the dead back to life than to live with a woman withoutendangering his soul." A few of the other topics expounded uponare the Milky Way, Cinderella, the moon, and males giving birth. Whilesome of the references put a cranky feminist spin on words that mightin context have different meaning--St. Paul's oft-quoted "betterto marry than to burn," for example--much in this vast tome willdazzle dabblers and intellectuals alike. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Know your Herstory.
Jack holland summed it up best when he mentioned that the romans had the morals of a bitch, a beast, a souless carnal creature and maleproperty. Women of the time were classified with beast and invalids, at best worse.

Walker did a fine job pointing out that they considered women lower than slaves, since slaves were or could be free people. Unfortuantey, she faied topoint out all the slanderousfemale monsters and projections of males. She missed that an aspect of hecate was a virgin made notassociated with the bitch, which is slander. yet,Barbara did a fine job finding truth about Medusa, and who first degraded Hag, byemphasize elder and loss of becauty and forgeting the wisdom of age.

She also did a superb job of eluding to the true mythos or stereotypes of pagan and christian devils andgods: Pan, Baphomet, Christ, Mithra andLucifer. All in all quite complete.

Product Description
The most comprehensive, detailed, and lavishly illustrated guide to garden plants ever published, first published in 1997, has now been completely revised to include nearly 250 new plants and photos. The AHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is an essential reference for all gardeners, from novices to experts.Amazon.com Review
Collecting contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists, the handsome and lavishly illustrated American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is a truly definitive gardening reference. With its 1,092 tiny-print pages, this may not be the book to tuck into your pocket as you weed and mulch, but what this encyclopedia lacks in portability, it certainly makes up for in scope. Hardy and tender plants, heirloom varieties and the latest hybrids--they're all accounted for here, with growing tips and background information about native habitats and ornamental features. You'll also find a fascinating section about botany, as well as information about basic gardening techniques such as mulching, staking, pruning, propagating, and protecting plants for winter. But the encyclopedia's main attraction is the individual plant entries--more than 15,000 of them, embellished with 6,000 full-color photographs and illustrations. From the visual glossary of leaves to the map of growing regions, The American Horticultural Society A-Z of Garden Plants provides an unsurpassed wealth of botanical information, making it the yardstick by which all other gardening references must be measured. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous reference
Absolutely my favorite plant reference.A plant reference book with great pictures, great summaries and as complete a reference book as you will find anywhere. This is my second one.I bought one about 10 years ago, so I felt it was time for an update. It is still a wonderful reference.

Delighted to have been able to get a prized book at 1/8th the original price.
Arrived in a timely fashion,in very good condition. This is a reference book
I will have for the rest of my days and be able to pass on to other future gardeners.

2-0 out of 5 stars great pictures, bad info
like others have said .. the pictures in this gigantic book are slick and glossy.. there are tons of plants listed.. the problem is .... a lot of the info is wrong ... i have found the plant heights andzonesare different than other books such as hortus III, sunset western gardeners etc ... the pics are great ,, but i wont even opoen this book any more because i dont want the wrong info stuck in my head.... if they re-edited , corrected this book and added a little meat to the info it would be one of the best and the $50 would have been worth the money...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best source for garden plants
The book is great. It allows the garden enthusiast to research any plant, shrub or tree.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate resource
If you've ever been stumped when attempting to find information on an obscure plant then this is the reference manual for you. The A - Z is a remarkably complete book, I've yet to look up a plant that isn't listed, the information is concise and relevant. Due to the staggering number of plants listed the book is set up by Family/Genus/Species/Variety - don't let this stop you, half the fun of finding what your'e looking for is stumbling upon other interesting plants along the way.

If you can have only one book on plants this would be my choice, it's a wonderful book filled with many great pictures - as an avid gardener who has a large plant book library I can't recommend this highly enough. ... Read more

The ultimate guide to the man behind the mask . . . and the mythology behind the man.

“Criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot. So my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. I must be a creature of the night, black, terrible. . . . I shall become a bat!” So declared millionaire industrialist Bruce Wayne, orphaned as a boy by a murderous thug and driven as a man to battle the scourge of crime by becoming Batman. Batman swooped into popular culture in 1939–and for nearly seventy years has thrilled audiences in countless comics, live-action and animated television programs, and seven feature films. Prowling the darkened rooftops of Gotham City, roaring through the teeming streets in the sleek, high-powered Batmobile, and leaping into action when the iconic Bat-Signal pierces the night sky, the Caped Crusader is a larger-than-life legend. And now, for the first time in more than thirty years, everything there is to know about Batman–from the beginning to the present, and from A to Z–is collected in one comprehensive new sourcebook. More than 500 pages of entries and illustrations include:

• fascinating details and the complete background on Batman’s origins
• biographies of every major character in the Batman universe–including his closest allies, from Robin the Boy Wonder and faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth to Commissioner Gordon; and his countless enemies, from the Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and the Riddler to Scarecrow, Two-Face, Ra’s al Ghul and Poison Ivy
• classic black-and-white comic book artwork throughout
• two sixteen-page full-color artwork inserts

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, FAR Too Short
This is indeed a great book. As a batfan you'll definitely need to make this purchase because this is by far the best book of its kind. All of the positive things said by other reviewers are true.

My problem is in finding out the Wonder Woman Encyclopedia is 100 pages longer than Batman's. 488 pages to 388.That means Batman's is about 250 pages short. Because Batman is the greatest superhero of all time, with BY FAR the highest number of different villains, allies, and supporting cast. There is no way the Wonder Woman book could be longer than the Caped Crusader's. It's too ridiculous to even fathom. Just ask yourself, how many Wonder Woman supporting cast members can you name? I'm a hardcore comics fan and I can only name a few. Meanwhile, my grandmother could name half a dozen Batman characters off the top of her head. Yet Wonder Woman is entitled to a 100-pages longer encyclopedia than Batman?

Now, on the eve of the release of the final chapter in this particular trilogy, The Essential Superman Encyclopedia, I come to find out the Superman volume ALSO checks in at 100 pages longer. It seems as though Robert Greenberger realized he was outdone by Phil Jimenez and now he's attempting to fix it by making the Superman book a more appropriate length. But what does that do for Batman, and the people who bought his encyclopedia? It leaves them out in the cold, with a stunted volume that contains far too many omissions. There are so many omissions, I assumed there were space constraints. But now that I know there were no such constraints, I can't help but feel that this book is incomplete.

Still a great volume. I'm certainly hanging on to my copy. But it stings to know they're doing these books on a grander scale now, and we'll have to settle for this scaled-back version... until the Updated and Expanded edition comes out, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars The complete History of the legendary caped winged crusader called Batman!
It has been roughly 30 odd years since anyone has re-written what Michael Fleisher wrote in Encyclopaedia of Comic Book Heroes - Batman Volume 1. If there was ever anyone qualified enough to take on the challenge it definitely would be robert Greenberger, that's exactly what he did analysing and filling entries for every character, craft, gadget and major storyline. Every character from the Dark Knight's world catalogued and then some, more added ones that were not even heard of. If you have the slightest presumption that you are a Batman buff then this exhaustive guide is a dream come true for you readers. As it says on the front "the ultimate guide to the man behind the mask, and the mythology behind the man". This is all about him his origins, his friends, his enemies all the secret identities revealed nothing left per chance all presented in alphabetical order easy to find character by their real names and then if that's not enough by their character names this is an encyclopaedia to envy. Perhaps it's Batman's ability to be many varied things to all men that has secured this ever lasting and ambitious epoch over 70years and still continuing after seventy years. From the pulp influence of the early years to the adventures in the 1960's Greenberger had much ground to cover he did it so magnificently, supported by excellent illustrations colour and black and white. This encyclopaedia is a chronological history of every single character that has ever appeared in Batman and all the other Bat related magazines since his very first appearance in Gotham city. From the very moment that this winged avenger of the night glided into our cultureof where angels dwelland into the mind of people reading it in (1939)he has not only thrilled audiences with real-life bravery in saving from real-life troubled situsations but has also established his original place as a cowled winged Icon. Exceptional work in art and great references to other fictional storybook novels because as he said in 1939 " crimanals are supertious and cowardly lot and my disguise must be able to strike terror into their very hearts!,as a winged creature of the night, black, terrible! I shall become a bat!" and sostarted a story that has not ended in it,s storyline or plot and nor will it ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book out there for Women
As a medical professional myself, I must say that this has to be the most well written book, written by someone who knows, another woman. The book is full of easy to read information including sound advice that is backed up by Research, which is very important in my career. When I came across it I could not put it down, after 3 hours while still in the store I finally purchased it and could not wait to get home to continue soaking in all the wonderful information that Dr Hudson had to share. I will definitely be recommending this to my other colleagues and my personal friends. Actually a great idea. What better way to let that person know you REALLY care.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsent book!
I came across this book while trying to find alternative remedies for my sister's recurrent UTIs.
It is very well written with clear instructions regarding the dosage plan for each topic.
I'm glad to say that my sister didn't take antibiotics after all.
Loads of helpful info nicely presented. Even my mom is convinced to try the menopause plan for her! (And she has refused to do so since the beginning).
Thank you Mrs Hudson for an excellent book for women who want to give the naturopathic approach a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide to Natural Remedies for Women
After years of experiencing excruciating periods, I was diagnosed with endometriosis.I have been searching for months to find natural alternatives to hormone therapy and another laparascopy.I found it in this book.It contains more information on endometriosis than any other resource I have looked through. It also provides thorough dietary suggestions and nutritional supplements. It offers an alternative to the more extreme therapies.

While I was looking to this book for a specific condition, it also contains a wealth of information on the various ailments that women suffer from, as well as suggestions for women's overall health.

I highly reccommend it to anyone looking to feel better, naturally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Suble Energy reference
Have only begun to digest the material here. This is a helpful reference on chakras, meridians, etc. that will be useful for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A incredible book
The book is a general collection of some of the best known subtle energies in the world such as: chi and kundalini, with a more extensive explaining of these two main streams. I'm also a pathologist and accupuncturist in Taiwan, and my suspicious of the existence between the link of meridian points and connective tissue, this book proves my hypothesis and incredibly others have already done. There is no mention of course in western medicine, but in the near future, the grouping between physicists and medical physicians are much needed. The era of Biophysics could enter a new age. Chapter 21 is very enlighting for western physician. Page 310 explains the Chakra development and age and the final development of the Twelfth Chakra: 49 to 57 years, this finding extraordinary match the commentary of the book "Meditation and Kabbalah" by Aryeh Kaplan, Page 82: The best time for the deepest levels of meditation is in old age, when the intellect is well developed and the pull of the body is weak.....This reflects the Talmudic teaching that such mysteries should not be taught to an individual unless he is "halfaway through his years". (This part is using the intellect to attain enlightment through the way of the 72 letters by the Abulafia system, a little different from the Provence school of the Ten senfirot where emotions are more important than intellect, but meditation dependences of the personal character to choose itw own path). It is a pity that the book "Medicina Magnetica" by William Maxwell is only found in microfilms and in Latin (I found that in the web page: [...]), because by using a more easy method, my guess is one could analize it in the outpatient office rather using a more complicated and expensive machine.

3-0 out of 5 stars TOO COMPLICATED
I THINK IS A BIG BOOK, WITH LOTS OF PAGES AND CONTENTS BUT FOR ME VERY SUPERFICIAL. THERE ARE PARTS LIKE THE CHAPTER ON ENERGY THAT TALK ABOUT PHYSICS THAT I DIDNT UNDERSTAND ALMOST NOTHING. THE IMPRESSION THAT I HAD IS THAT AFTER READING THIS BOOK WE WOULD NEED TO DEEP THE STUDIES ON THE SUBJECTS TO REALY LEARN.

2-0 out of 5 stars review
Chakras should be respected like nuclear bombs.Kundalini like lightning. For knowledge on genuine experience with them read gopi krishna and muktanandas autobiographys. youll hafto have grace and hard inner work to genuine heal with the hands. The new age that says its easy only sells in rich countrys. trying to force the kundalini or chakras awake before the mind is 99 percent pure is very dangerous. meditate pray and make good karma for purity. Be patient and dont expect instant results. never do dangerous breathing exercises or practices

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read
Book is a wonderful resource for those doing energy work and those that are just looking for better health and wellness. Book came quickly and in great shape too. Thank you for the recommendation. ... Read more
