A Masterpiece!
What a stunning book. Readers can truly get "Lost" in it. The photos are gorgeous and the text informative and entertaining. Even if you know a lot about "Lost," you'll learn much, much more with this book. Bravo to the creators!

Overall pleased
As a fanatic of the show who followed all things CANON, I enjoyed the book overall.It's a great overall resource if you want to look something quick for reference.Whenever I thought something was omitted, it would pop up as information under a different entry.

There are some small errors here and there.But I think they can be taken with a "grain of salt."

Overall it's a great resource for the show.It doesn't offer "answers", but I felt the clarifications on things can be considered as new information.Such as how Ethan joined the others, that Widmore ordered the purge an JAcob suggested to Richard that he be removed from power, etc.

Great book, but with painful grammatical and other editing errors
This is a great book for any die-hard LOST fan. It includes a number of details and clarifications that have not been offered anyplace else, which makes it indispensable. At the same time, many valuable features that one can find on Lostpedia.com (unofficial Lost encyclopedia online) are missing. Things like full lists of episode titles and summaries of each season, and, especially, timelines, character and mystery statuses. The book is also missing an index, which is quite odd for a publication of this nature, and makes it impossible to cross reference. This would lead me to believe there was not enough room to include all these features, which makes it somewhat curious that Sawyer's reading list, for example, is including twice in the book. Indeed, a number of facts and pictures are duplicated, while others are left out entirely.

My biggest complaint though is the number of grammatical errors. Someone who wrote or edited the book has a lot of trouble identifying the subject of a sentence. For instance, one sentence reads "Before his father went on the Kahana mission, Michael tried to make contact with Walt." What this sentence means is that Michael's father went on the Kahana mission, but this is incorrect--it was Walt's father, Michael, who went on the mission. This type of incongruent-subject error is very frequent in the book. I've only read about 1/10 of it so far and have found similar mistakes five times already, as well as a number of typos.

Most books have some mistakes, partly because our eyes tend to see what we know to be correct, so even astute editors miss some of these things. But there's a reasonable limit on just how many mistakes there should be, especially when this book is published by DK, known for its reference and educational books.

I'm glad I bought the book now, but I'm also hoping for a second, improved edition, at which time I'll sell the current one on Ebay and cut my losses.

A good, if not definitive resource with some noticeable flaws
The LOST Encyclopedia will not bring a bevy of new insights or craved "answers" for fans of the show, but it is a solid catalog of facts and histories from the show's vast mythology. I wouldn't call it comprehensive, but it's an enjoyably casual reference for fans of the show.

The biggest negative trait of the book is the sloppy editing. Despite being delayed multiple times before its release, the articles still contain numerous typographical errors (I'd estimate one every couple of pages on average), far more than should be acceptable for a professionally published work like this. There are even entries that are OUT OF ALPHABETICAL ORDER: under "D," there are three entries ordered "Donovan," "Dogen" and "Doctors." I know it's something most people won't lose a lot of sleep over, but as an English major I found them impossible to ignore and quite distracting from the flow of the book.

More important and germane to the nature of the LOST Encyclopedia, there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the emphasis placed on some elements of the show in contrast to others. For example, on the same two-page spread, Eddie Colburn, a minor character featured in ONE flashback episode, is given as much attention as Edward Mars, a character who appeared in multiple flashbacks and on the Island. Another example: there's a massive two-page entry dedicated to the RECORD PLAYER in the Swan station. The same amount of space is given to the blast door map, one of the pivotal set pieces of the series. If I had to guess, I'd say that such decisions were made to make the articles fit into neat two-page layouts, with the visual presentation emphasized over the relevance of information.

As mentioned in a previous review, the alphabetization of the entries is slapdash. If you want to actually look up an obscure element of the show rather than just casually browse the book, you may find yourself taking several guesses on what your query may be titled before you find it. For example, if you want to look up the glowing river alternatively called "The Source" or "The Heart of the Island," you won't find it listed under either of those two names. Instead, it is mentioned in a brief paragraph in the massive entry "The Island," as well as intermittently in other entries. Other aspects of the show that this fan thinks should have entries but do not, based on their importance in the show, include the Whispers, Time Travel, and the Donkey Wheel.

Now, to the positive. Given the existence of the much more comprehensive fan wiki "Lostpedia," the biggest appeal of The LOST Encyclopedia is not the depth or organization of its entries. Instead, it is the hundreds and hundreds of visual aids that accompany the entries, along with photos of LOST props and locales sprinkled liberally throughout the book. All of the entries on the major Dharma stations feature original diagrams. There are hundreds of close-ups of key props, such as Faraday's journal and maps used by the characters, as well as more obscure pieces like Drive Shaft promotional posters and the contents of Kate's time capsule. Most fans have never had an opportunity to see such components of LOST lore this clearly and up close.

The encyclopedia also features a number of ancillary elements that exist outside of the show, thus establishing them as canon while also exposing them to fans who may not have seen them before. The entry for Alvar Hanso contains information about Thomas Mittlewerk and Rachel Blake, characters featured only in the LOST Alternate Reality Game "The LOST Experience." The article on the Purge includes a copy of the truce between the Others and the Dharma Initiative, previously available only to those who bought the special edition of the Season Five box set. There are even translations of many of the hieroglyphics featured on sets and props from the show, engravings that would be impossible to discern from screencaps.

Ironically, the unofficial Lostpedia easily remains the definitive source of information on LOST even after the release of this book. Really, The LOST Encyclopedia functions best as a kind of coffee table attraction, a tome to peruse for the sake of curiosity as opposed to a serious study of the show's mythology. While its numerous textual errors give some entries an unpolished feel, from a strictly visual perspective the book is stunning. It's not easy to produce as many new images from a show as heavily scrutinized as LOST, but the material unique to the book, as well as the conversational tone best suited to enjoyable casual reading, make it worth the buy.

best all around do it yourself book
This book covers it all!This is my second copy- I wore the first one out!If you live in the country, this is a must have.

Mostly a reference list
This book is definitely for 'beginners' as it goes over mostly very simple things.There are a few 'advanced' topics but nothing has much detail.Its very hard to read as in the middle of explaining something they just go and list a bunch of references for you to read.Then they move onto the next topic without much indication. If you have always lived in the city is probably good for you.But if you've lived in the country or have watched a lot of cable shows - probably not going to do you much good.Back to Basics - Readers Digest is a much better option.

Defiantly buy this book!
Good book overall... i was rely looking forward to receiving this item. I was very happy with the dairy section, raising livestock, and gardening. All that was great! LOVE it other then the lack of canning. I want to live a more self-sufficient life and this is a book i will never be without .If you have any doubts on getting this book, throw them away! This book is worth the small price, and i don't regret buying it. YOU SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK!

Best do it yourself country living book
I love this book! Carla Emory is an expert on homesteading and she has amazing information on every subject with step by step details on how to do it yourself. Her instructions encourage you in believing you can do what she did. The illustrations, while few, are very well done and each portion of the illustration is labeled where needed. I was so impressed with this book that I purchased it for the library I run. It is never on our shelves because since it was cataloged, it has been checked out continually. This is a book everyone interested in learning how to buy a plot of land and everything connected with it to making your own candles should own. It's a great book just for reading and learning about country living and reasonably priced as well.

Encyclopedia
Here's the thing:
The Encyclopedia is less a study guide, and more of a review.

It is set up by topic into 8 sections, and as you read through the questions, one flows right into the next.Each question is also on the same subject as it flows through the book.*THIS IS NOT HOW THE NCE EXAM IS SET UP*.

As others have said, YES the NCE is much, much harder.Rosenthal's questions are a breeze comparatively.In no way does it model what questions might be on the NCE, *however*, it prepares you for the amount of material you NEED to know in order to understand all the questions on the NCE.Questions on the test might drop 3 or 4 "need to know" items that Rosenthal went over in several sections over 7 questions.The NCE is not an easy exam, but Rosenthal's is an easy review, and will help overall.

I must note though: reading through this "review" book builds confidence and familiarity with the multiple choice format.Speaking as the kid who aced essays but always failed multiple choice, reading through his book for a month before the exam no doubt helped me to PASS the NCE.What a relief.I finally passed a multiple choice exam!

I did not use the CD's, but other study material would be helpful.The NCE is HEAVY on *ethics, *practical application, and *statistics!The Encyclopedia is heavy on theory, and the therapeutic relationship.Just know it all.And as Rosenthal recommends, absolutely read your code of ethics.Twice.

My *only* gripe is that Rosenthal uses the phrases "inasmuch" and "ferret out" WAY too many times.I know it shouldn't have, but it started to get under my skin.So Rosenthal, other ways to say "ferret out" include, but are not limited to: weed out, sift through, pick out, identify, discover, delve, dig for, explore, unveil, find, locate, flush out, uncover...you get the idea.

Otherwise, great guide!!

A comprehensive Review
I am preparing to take the NCE this fall using this book.It provides a great review of ALL the important concepts in counseling and some more.There are practice questions accompanied with explanations for the correct as well as incorrect responses.I feel more confident having this book as a study guide.I recommend it!!

This book was some what helpful...
This book was very helpful as a review tool, however, the questions on the test are written so poorly that it is nearly impossible to use Rosenthal's book to pass the exam.I passed using common sense and a little bit of guessing.The questions are written so badly that you have a difficult time understanding what is expected.I STILL RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS A STUDY TOOL FOR LEARNING THINGS RELATED TO COUNSELING -BUT DO NOT EXPECT THE TEST TO BE A CLEAR AS THIS STUDY GUIDE.I passed the NCE on July 6, 2010 and I still have anxiety thinking about the way in which the test questions read.

Thrilled to be sharing these books for the third time
Loved Encyclopedia Brown when I was growing up.Then when my son was of the proper age, we read them together.Now I am getting a third opportunity to share them with a sweet little girl that I am guardian of who loves to read.I just ordered a the new box set just for her and cannot wait for them to come in and for us to get started reading.Encyclopedia Brown is far superior to any of the other kid detective books out on the market today.

Shame on you Marvel/DK !!.....
This is certainly NOT a complete encyclopedia of characters by ANY means !! Your "O" section of characters goes from "Occulus to Overmind"....You completely left out a profile for the classic Daredevil villain "The Owl" who has been excluded in both this Marvel Encyclopedia Edition and the previous edition ! It's inexcusable to leave out such a classic Marvel villain TWICE now from this and the previous edition, while featuring some waaaaaay more obscure villains. Also NO profiles for other popular Marvel villains such as : Bulldozer, Piledriver, Thunderball, Scarecrow, Diamondhead, ManBull, and the supervillain group The Wrecking Crew nas no profile either ! Shame on you Marvel, DK, the writers, and everybody involved, for these terrible mistakes !

too basic
For Amazon's price this book is a no brainer for any collector or someone interested in learning more about Marvel. However, I was disappointed upon its arrival. Being a longtime reader I found the information far too basic. Nearly the same amount of coverage is listed for insignificant, peripheral characters as it is with classic heroes and villains. This is especially true regarding the 'powers' section. The artwork is good and its number of entries expansive but again, just not enough depth.

love it
I purchased this book at the IRA conference in Chicago--it is absolutely amazing. The pages are thick and the colors are so very vivid! Sorted alphabetically, it lists all the characters with a "factfile" (height, wiehgt, real name, occupation, first appearance)and then"powers" and "allies/foes" for cross-referencing. I would recommend this book for any-aged Marvel fan. Mom or Dad could read it while Jr. is entertained by the awesome visuals and older children can read alone (my guess is approximately 7th-grade reading level).

Loved Book
This book was purchased for my 9yr old who LOVES anything Marvel.We saw the book at a bookstore for a much higher price, came home and found it for a much lower price on Amazon.The book has very detailed and colorful pictures, but not "comic booky."The book is large and for the marvel fan, this would make a perfect coffee table book to display.My child just loves to look at his, and the first night after recieving his he fell asleep with it. Good book very interesting
I thought this was a good book filled with interesting Halo facts. I learned more about Halo then I ever have before and it taught me many things. You should probably wait for the edition including Reach to come out before you buy.

Missed perfection by this much!
A lot of people have said nice stuff about this book and for the most part of it I agree. I've only played a few multi-player frag matches of Halo with my friends but I'm not a big gamer and don't consider myself a huge Halo fan. But I do like Sci-fi in general and based on the ravings of the game and it's story from my friends I picked this book up. And I'm glad I did!
This tome has a lot of information and backstory about the Halo universe. Everything you needed to know about all the races, the weapon specs and a section on the Master Chief, along with lots of nice pictures.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was because most of the pictures are what look like cropped images straight from the game (bulky and odd looking). If the publishers or whoever had hired artists to do some proper artwork for the creatures, weapons and characters this book would have been completely perfect.
All in all not a bad book and a must have for any Halo fan or fans of sweeping sci-fi epics.

Encyclopedia Brown


Encyclopedia is far off the best book that I have read, and I recommend it to others my age to read it.Published in 1963, it has a sweet tone also made into a great television show in the 1950's. Leroy Brown also known as Encyclopedia Brown, is mostly known in his family and neighborhood for solving cases.And other mysteries, his father Chief Brown is a chief police at the neighborhood of where the Brown family lives at. When a case gets too difficult for him he goes to his son Leroy for help, and boy does Leroy enjoy doing this, especially at the dinner table . Leroy got his name Encyclopedia because of the reason that he was the first boy who finished reading a whole Encyclopedia and other amazing long books in his whole neighborhood.Since his father is a police officer, Leroy opened his own detective work; he calls it " Brown Boy detective, no case too small. 25 cents per day plus expenses."

Each book in the Encyclopedia Brown mystery series is self contained and that the reader is not required to have read earlier books to understand the stories. The author introduces the major characters, and setting at the beginning of the book so you don't have to memorize anything. For what I have read, it has filled me with greater knowledge of solving mysteries. Thanks to Leroy, every child in the neighborhood gets what belongs to them. And Leroy makes 25 cents per case, plus expenses. It all works out in Brown's family neighborhood. The book is divided into sections, usually about short little story put together to complete the book. The author Donald J. Sobol places the answers on the back of the book, usually starts at page 80. You can look at the answer of every mystery that has happened in the book, to make it more fun, you can try solving it yourself before looking. It always leaves you hanging before you know it.

I repeat what I said before; I recommend this book to others who are looking for good mystery books. Born on October 4th 1924, and at the age of 86. Mr. Sobol has written really amazing and interesting books. A great book to read.

Plot Holes From the Start
First off, this Macaulay Culkin book cover is absolute bollocks! Encyclopedia Brown is most certainly an African American, from when he was first penned until now. If "Wikipedia" Brown, if you will, is supposed to be so damn smart, why in the hell can he not write the letter N properly? He must have seen a capital N at least eighty nine, if not ninety thousand times considering his free time was often occupied in illegal congress with Ms. Britannica. Thirdly, the Meany gang, I meanie come on! Bugs certainly would have learned a few lessons from being busted the first few times. In fact if this series were to ever make any sort of strides toward coherence the Meany gang should by now be outwitting this toddler. The story is very straightforward, albeit a little (A LOT) improbable. I will commend the novel for it terseness; however at times this writing style limited the author in accomplishing what he set upon to create. In conclusion, and with solemn regret, I must concur, in respectful anguish and of sound mind, upon a most grave finding: Encyclopedia Brown is NOT a novel to approach with expectations of a deep read. If you are trying to read the entire Sobol catalogue DO NOT miss this one, but if you are only trying to become familiar with the author to look smart with the English Major crowd, I'd recommend going straight to "Secret Agents Four". You'll never drink milk again!!!. That latter title may even be a choice read for those in Security Studies. The level of intelligence in the writing is akin to that with which they are familiar.

Great Thinking Book
Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective is the first on this series written years ago, but still loved today.Encyclopedia Brown helps his father solve real live mysteries as well as solving cases for family and friends at the low cost of 25 cents per day.The cases in the book are short to read and after you try to solve the puzzle you can read in the back how he came to the conclusions he did.This book includes missing rollerblades, a stolen necklace, a bank robber and even a knife in a watermelon.Curious yet?If so read for yourself to see how the evidence stacks up.

These books are a great read for any young reader.The books are probably set for second grade and up.The stories can each be read at one time and the clues force your reader to think outside the box to try to figure out how he came to the conclusion that he did.I enjoyed these books as a child and again now as an adult!

Second time is the charm
The Encyclopedia Brown books encourage re-reading -- in fact, they are so much better the second time around because, knowing the solutions for the mysteries, your young reader can spot the clues as they are presented.

Our set of Encyclopedia Brown books is older than the one pictured here, with illustrations by Leonard Shortall, and they are excellent.I'm sure the content of the books is the same no matter what the cover looks like.

As a mom, I really like that the detective is a nice, normal kid -- no sass, no gross-out -- and his sidekick is a girl.Encyclopedia Brown gets along with everybody and uses his observations to help his neighbors.

*** update *** after rereading some of these with the boys, I noticed that they are Christian-friendly.Nothing overtly Christian happens, nobody prays, but the settings sometimes are "after church" or "the building beside the old church..."It's nice.

All the kids love it!
This books is great! All of my kids (6,4,2) love to just open it up and look at the pictures. It sparks lots of questions from the older ones and is very enjoyable to help them learn and discover new things that they want to learn more about.

DK First Encyclopedia
I was very pleased with this purchase.The book arrivedquickly and in excellent shape.It has beautiful pictures and info that children (and even adults) of all ages will enjoy.

Good for its purpose (except for minor errors)
I read this book to my daughter when she was 7, before she could really read herself.More accurately, we went through this book together, looking at the many excellent photos as I explained the diverse range of topics in some depth, thus going well beyond the actual text in the book.I think that's the best use of the book, althoughchildren reading it on their own should still enjoy it and benefit from it.

I did spot a few minor errors in the book, which I was able to correct, and I used these errors to demonstrate to my daughter that one shouldn't automatically believe everything written in books. Nevertheless, I can still recommend this book for children about 4 to 8 years old, especially since there aren't many competing books which cover this range of topics at this level with photos of this quality.

We've now moved on to One Million Things: A Visual Encyclopedia, also published DK, which likewise has excellent photos but is a much larger and more detailed children's encyclopedia.So far, it's looking very promising.

EXCELLENT Encyclopedia for pre-K - 2nd grade...
DK is a master at laying out information in appealing yet digestible chunks for children.

For example, opening the book up at random, "Rivers and Lakes" begins with this introductory paragraph "Many rivers start as a stream or spring, high up on a moutainside.As the water flows downhil, other streams flow into it to make a river."

Then there are other paragraphs, each illustrated with 1-4 photographs, with the following headings:Waterfalls, Stages of a river, River transportation, River life, Lakes, Salty lakes, Largest Lakes, Lake Life -- all on a two page spread!

My kids loved to look through this book when they were younger.Sometimes we would go through a few pages as our "bedtime story."

Highly recommended.

A good first encyclopedia
This is one of my 4 yr old's most favorite books right now. It is also a book that we like to read to the kid.

Where are they?
I can remember when comics were "big". There are some you never hear of today,such

Some plagiarism involved
I'd be very wary of some of the information in this AND the previous printing.I happen to know that the entries for two of the "Marvel Family" characters were plagiarized.Mary Marvel's was lifted off a fanfiction website and Captain Marvel Junior's from a role-playing game site.I know this because I originally wrote them and neither jibe with "history" listed in the DCU Captain Marvel's entry.

A classic expansive detailed overview of the heros & villiains in the dc universe which is an essential character reference
What can be said about this encyclopaedia that hasn't already been said? I had the previous 2004 edition I was thrilled to have that one, this new expanded encyclopaedia is spectacular. This book is exhaustive on referencing over one thousand DC characters, origins, significant events in DC mythology. It provides a definite order to the pandemonium of DC characters and history in a most visually acceptable way. The encyclopaedia focuses on teams, places, weapons, vehicles, battles and everything that is DC. Emphasised in more brand new pages are the icons of DC mythology like Batman, and Superman which have been around forever in that their are Rich in characters even of the most obscure and overlooked forgotten individuals. The art work is so legendary enviable that it,s beyondthe norm of realistic in that all the characters seem to jump out of youi in the book in all directions. The cover is a masterpiece of expansion in that Alex Ross isthe most artistically talented artist ever to have imagination and flair that go beyond the norm. This is a book for true DC aficionados that no true DC lover can be without it will become a collector's item because everything about it is fabulous. Not only does it supersede the 2004 edition but it also has an added 48 brand new pages in it with expanded detail on some characters of a more pronounced nature in it with updates and new storylines including the recent Infinite crisis story. This book will be even more successful than the previous one. An essential DC mythology and character reference of all the charcters good or bad in the dc universe.

Editorial Disaster but An Exciting Book for Superhero Enthusiasts!
For collectors who enjoy collecting books about comicbooks and superheroes, this is an essential piece of your library. I am happy to own it, bu I would have been extremely frustrated if I paid the original list price.

The DC Comics Encyclopedia, by DK Publishing, reflects some of the sloppiest editorial work I have ever read from a professional book publisher. I have been in education most of my adult working life and I expect a higher standard of quality work from my teenage students when it comes to reviewing and editing their own work.

I am not qualified to evaluate the accuracy of the information but you don't need to be an expert to spot the many flaws. Many pictures are mislabeled. Some sentences just stop midway and pick up with the next sentence. I have even found what looks like editorial notes that were clearly intended for one of the many contributors. It is incredible to believe that this would miss the watchful eye of the editor and publisher and actually make it to print.

As a reference book, The DC Comics Encyclopedia still has value. I can only hope that the person or people responsible for the sloppy work are not hired on for additional projects in the near future. Comics may not be considered "high literature" but for those of us who admire the work of the creators, artist, writers, and publishers of comic books...we, along with the creators, themselves, deserve more respect than what is evidenced by the work in this book. ... Fun, Readable, Inspiring
The Encyclopedia Brown series is an excellent way to encourage youngsters to read critically, think, and have fun doing it.In this example, as in others, Leroy (Encyclopedia) Brown and his friend Sally run a youthfuldetective agency in Idaville, matching withs with Bugs Meany, the Lions, and other juvenile wrong-doers.The cases involve theft of fruit wagons, and other minor (and sometimes un-minor) crimes.Each mystery is concise and easiy read, but some are easier than others to solve.I read this book as a kid and often failed to find the answers; as an adult most are solveable, but once or twice I had to peak at the solutions in the back pages. This is excellent reading for youngsters and young mystery fans.

great history overview
We use this book as our homeschool history textbook.We read two pages a week and then find an interesting subject from those pages for additional study.

Excellent as a spine for a homeschool program, especially classical
We are using the excellent, chronologically arranged Kingfisher Encyclopedia for my 12 yo for 7th through 9th grade as the key text, or spine. This child loves history and expressed a desire to study from the beginning of history to right now, including all the cultures. Another homeschooling mother whom I respect has raised 5 children who are successful in college on this text (including earlier editions).

The book is excellent, well thought out, fairly comprehensive, and uses the layout popularized by the DK Eyewitness books. What is meant by spine is that we read the text and then supplement with other texts and activities for more depth. For example, our first units we call Ancient Civilisations; we will also use the DK Eyewitness Mesapotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, as well as the Memoria Press' Famous Men of Greece, and ... of Rome (which have student workbooks and answer keys as well as myths.) And the appropriate Horrible Histories. And the DK Bible. Henty and Sutcliff historical novels, The Children's Homer, and good translations of Gilgamesh and the Aeneid. And a good visual dictionary of the ancient world.

What this book is not is comprehensive. Were it so, it would be in multiple volumes and cost a fortune! Much more than the cost of this single volume and supplementary texts, many of which may be bought used or borrowed from the library. I also would not use this book as a sole source for the early grades, except as a reference for the teacher and a source of illustrations.

Kingfisher History Enclyclopedia
A good buy for us!We bought this to supplement the series: The Story of the World by Susan Bauer. It is easy to ready, plenty of pictures and TONs of information.

Disappointing text, good pictures
This book is a world history organized by time.So, the page after ancient greek history is the Shang Dynasty in China.THis could have been a very powerful approach, if the selections had been better organized and had better lead-ins to subsequent pages.But instead it is almost confusing and definitely hard to use as a page-turner for an interested kid.It is easier to progress from ancient greek history to classical greek history than from ancient greek history to chinese history.
Having said that, the pictures are satisfactory and generate interest in my 6 yr old.So, if you receive this as a gift, don't toss it out.But don't purchase it either.

Wonderful History Reference!
I purchased the Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World for our home school program this year.It is a wonderful reference book, and we use it not only for school subjects, but also in everyday conversations, when something comes up about history that we're not sure of.We run to the shelf to see what the IHW has to say.I decided to look for this older edition as opposed to purchasing the newer edition (Kingfisher History Encyclopedia) after reading reviews and noticing the differences between the two.As an additional note for those who teach from a biblical worldview, this volume does not support a Creation/Flood model, but includes the first chapter as being 40,000-500 B.C., The Ancient World. This does not, in my opinion, necessitate throwing out the rest of the book, but maybe opens up a discussion with older students of differing opinions of early history that arise without knowledge of the truth of God's Word. I appreciate the broad global scope of the historical events included in the book, since I find most American history texts very Western-centric.Definitely a worthwhile investment in any household! ... awesome pics but...
This book covers a huge range of time, so I understand some lack of detail.The sheer vagueness is hard to believe.The amount and quality of the pictures is amazing.But...
Each section is so unbelievably short, you can't even use this book to teach an overview of history.Some famous figures get a sentence or two.Anything at all in the last 1000 years is so brief you might as well not bother.Many important historical figures aren't even mentioned.
The sectons are so short, there is no way kids bother retaining any information.Even if a child started to show interest, the chapter ends before it could form enough to want another book on it.

The chapters that are three pages long are enough for very young kids.Any older and it is sort of a waste.

The book is good
1. as a breakdown to keep track of what part of history you are actually studying, whether from stories or other history books.It keeps you from missing important pieces.
2.For the maps.They are very clear about where exactly you are studying, unlike other books that have such close up maps, you can't really tell where you are in the big picture.
3.The pictures.Such good pics they almost make up for the lack of information
4.It really does cover everything.It goes over so much history, I can't believe it all fits.

Very pleased with this book
My daughter is a rising 4th grader at a Montessori school and her teacher requires this book.This is a secular book of World History, not Human History.As a result it devotes a large section to events that occurred before people entered the story, and does so in a manner consistent with prevailing, mainstream, scientific thought, presented at an age appropriate level.

The first section is the Prehistoric World section and there are 2 pages devoted to Evolution, 2 pages devoted to the formation of the Universe and Earth, and 2 pages devoted to Biogenesis.The remainder of the Prehistoric World section is a secular presentation of various prehistoric life forms, extinct animals, and a few pages on the great apes including Australopithecus, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, and Homo sapiens.If this treatment of the prehistoric world offends your religious beliefs then you may want to steer clear of this book.

The remainder of the book addresses the Ancient World through Modern times in a fairly linear presentation.Every couple of pages is devoted to a topic of interest that tends to define the region or time frame of interest.There is sufficient information to provide the student a high level overview of each topic.I expect my child will take an interest in certain topics and then dive deeper on her own, probably reading a topic specific book, writing a short paper, or creating a diorama.

In my opinion this is an excellent book, and I'm glad my child's teacher has selected it.I don't have a problem with the earlier sections in the book, but I am really looking forward to some of the latter sections where I plan to combine the book with History Channel and PBS documentaries.I am very pleased with the secular treatment of the topics. There are, though, 2 pages devoted to the rise of Christianity, as well as 2 pages devoted to the rise of Islam.And of course, it is hard to omit discussion of the historic influence of the Catholic Church.Again, these topics are presented without emotional overtures or bias, which I appreciate and do not find inappropriate.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a rational and mainstream treatment of world history that is appropriate for 4th through 6th grades.

Okay (the best I have been able to find for the age group)
I wish I had been able to preview the book before purchasing.I went ahead and purchased due to the rave reviews and due to the recommendation found in the Well-Trained Mind forums.

Pros:The pictures are bright and interesting.It is written at a level that my five-year-old can understand the information being read aloud. The pictures are adequate to capture and keep her interest.

Cons:I am disappointed in how little history is actually presented in some areas where evolution receives around 100 pages worth of attention.I don't have a problem with evolution but perhaps it could have received a little less attention and more attention could have been paid in updating at least a little history from the year 2000.I wish the events of September 11th were included but apparently no updates have been made since 2001.My copy has a copyright of 2006, so I find the omission of the events such as September 11th, the wars In Iraq and Afghanistan, etc., to leave a huge gap in our world's history.I am also not crazy about the mention of global warming as being a serious issue (at least global warming has finally been proven to be a hoax), so I will I be skipping over that section.I am also not crazy about how Christians (especially Catholics) are painted to be violent and intolerant of anyone who happened to disagree with them, so I will make sure to point my daughter to different viewpoints on these and other subjects, as well. I understand that this an encyclopedia of world history, but I really wish there had been a bit more attention given to the establishment of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, not just a scant paragraph that barely even mentions it.

Overall:I am not in love with this text but, in the absence of finding anything better at this point, I am trying to live with it.

Religion aside, this is a useful tool and a great resource
To touch on other comments: there is some religion. There are a few links that don't work anymore. Yes, you can find some of the links yourself.The type is NOT too small.

We used this book AND the kingfisher book for 6 months within our studies of ancient history at a 3rd grade level.Our family of 5 unanimously agreed that this usborn book is far superior to the kingfisher book.

There is a timeline on the bottom of every page for the spatial learner to see where they are within the context of time.The pages are illustrated nicely and appropriately. Items are labeled for the compulsive reader. The index is comprehensive. The breadth of information is appropriate for kids, under the heading of "put it before them and let them feast."If there is something your child wants to know more about it, for all means, look it up online or in other resource books.Many of the links provided will yield endless hours of additional information (and while you can look them up yourself with a search engine, I have three kids and am not interested in searching through pages of links, and I found it very helpful to have a ready-to-go link handy).

The comments about religion vs evolution are interesting... I personally don't think it is possible to provide a comprehensive overview of history without some sort of slant.We are a Christian family who also believes in science and evolution, and I am competent and smart enough to use the information in these books as a tool with my kids to teach them about what OUR beliefs are.People who are blaming the information in this book are perhaps expecting this book to parent their kids for them.

After six months of side-by-side weekly usage between this usborn book and the kingfisher book, this is - in the opinion of our household - a better book, with more interesting illustrations, better written text for kids, and providing in general a better single resource.If you are comparing the two books, this review was for you.

Encyclopedia with Wrong Facts
I am trying to figure out an animal encyclopedia to buy for my 5-year old son. I decided to get a few from library before deciding. I got this one and the National Geographic one. My son likes this BK one much better. Today is a snow day and I decided to read a few pages together with him and we turned to the blue whale page. It is stated that the blue whale "is so big that the next-largest creature on Earth, the bull elephant, could sit on its tongue". My son happens to have a "Toothed Whale" book checked out and we'd just learned a sperm whale can be as much as 50 metric tons and I didn't think elephants were that big. Indeed, largest bull elephant is 12 metric tons, and sperm whale is not even the second largest animal on earth. That honor goes to fin whale, estimated to weigh as much as 70 metric tons. The blue whale page was the first page I seriously read, so chances are such errors are elsewhere in the book also. Encyclopedia is supposed to be thorough and authoritative, not sure I'd want to buy this.

Learning to conserve animals at a primal young ripe age!
DK First Animal Encyclopaedia is not by far the most scientifically accurate book around but then again this is a book that is aimed at a certain age group. In my opinion any book that can illustrate the magnificence of our animal world and relate that with reference sections on animal superlatives identifying each one from loudest to tallest to smallest is what a first animal encyclopaedia is expected to do. It's a book that will not only delight children and leave them in awe of the grandeur of the animal world but it will also educate them into understanding the different facets of animals and their lives in their homes of their lands that they belong to which is full of vibrant photos notes and simple references. The animal kingdom is an enduringly informtive topic that has always fascinated kids in which they love the rainbow coloured birdsthe regal elephant andthe fearsome powerful formidable crocodile. This book not only will occupy the curious mind of a smaller child but will also be more than suitable for the older child with its in depth information. But above all it has the potential to educate our future generation; if they learn from an early age how valuable all species of animals are then we can be assured that our world will not lose anymore species because of our negligence.

Errors in an Encyclopedia?
On page 37, at the bottom, this encyclopedia states that an Elk is another name for a Moose. I sent the book back.

I bought my first copy of this book at Books A Million along with Martha's sewing book and payed a lot more. I love both books.My daughter came to visit and reviewed it and told me it was on Amazon.
