Just ok
Most people take emergency medicine in their 4th year of medical school.This book is a good overview of the subject, but in reality you will have already heard all of this in your third year clerkships, what you need to focus on in this book is the emergent treatments for the conditions it lists.Since you only have one month of EM I'd recommend you either start reading this book ahead of time or just use this as a reference.

This book is great! Written by Harvard professors. About 2-4 pages per topic. Teaches the reader everything about each topic in a concise way. Very easy to read but covers a lot of information. The book needs careful proofreading and editing.
This book contains many errors. It creates confusion and anxiety in the reader. Do not blindly believe the answers. Crosscheck it with Tintinalli's text when in doubt. Errors are noted in the answers as well as the explanations given.

Mostly very good, but not great - too many errors - 3 STARS
I have been using this book in conjunction with EM Just the Facts, using Tintanelli 6th as my standard (along with several specialty topic books) to prepare for upcoming EM Boards. Overall I find this book quite useful as a review and supplement after reading through EM Just the Facts/Tintanelli.I am a little bit frustrated because there are some discrepancies between the two review books - as mentioned above, I used Tintanelli 6th, etc. to arbitrate.There are some relatively obvious mistakes - which can happen with any book, OK, a little annoying and time consuming to check, but it happens, and some subtle distinctions of approach, OK, that is fine.BUT, what to say about this?: page 55, Figure 8-2 is supposed to represent, according to the Promes book, Hodgkin's disease.Given the other choices for the question this makes some sense as a choice.HOWEVER, the SAME photograph is on page 1498 of Tintanelli, where it is described as an "infected branchial cleft cyst". Not that I memorized the photographs, but there should be some kind of clinical truth to photographs used to illustrate questions, shouldn't there?I didn't really want to spend the time writing a review right now, but this was really kind of odd!!There are other books of questions which I will be using also, I will review them separately.

Addendum:OK, I'm taking back a star (Amazon won't let me actually do this, it seems).There are simply too many mistakes!!Examples:Working my way through Chapter 21, the answer to 21-32 has "alkalosis" and "acidosis" (the heart of the question) reversed.Not good.Then 21-34, big mistake, the classic pulse oximetry error question."Methemoglobinemia causes a falsely decreased pulse oximetry reading..." - Tintanelli (in bold type, no less) "the pulse oximeter will suggest a falsely high oxygen saturation..." [page 1171, 6th ed.].As I understand it, whether (or, in which way) the pulse oximeter reading is wrong depends on the actual methemoglobin level.If it is > 30% or so and the 02 sat reading is (the supposedly typical) ~85% then it is too high.I don't think the question, as I understand it, captures this distinction.Please correct me if I am wrong!

The answer to 17-13 is wrong.The same with 18-9 and others.The answer to question 19-9 doesn't really make sense unless periodontal disease is considered to predispose to aspiration pneumonia - not my understanding, rather to an increased risk of an anaerobic infection from an aspiration if it were to occur.

This book needs to be properly edited.I do think the questions are generally written in a clear manner, and they cover a good range of material, but the number of errors takes away from the overall quality and value of the book to me.

For most students and residents I talked to, this was the only book they used for the rotation, and all of these are EM-minded people.Great concise discussions of ED's most common complaints as well as diagnosis and management.

Best book I read
I read all 6 case files for third year, and this continues the series into fourth year with another home run.The cases are right out of the ED, telling you what you need to do first and how to proceed, the exact things you will be asked by attendings.

I Love the Case Files!
When looking for books to help me review for exams, the Case Files series was recommended to me. Ever since I purchased one for my Psych rotation, I've been hooked since. The sections start off with a case and let you come up with the diagnosis and treatment plan before turning the page. The case is then picked apart and the main conept of the case is outlined (its by no means an all inclusive summary of the topic, but it is covered fairly well). There are then comprehension q's at the end of each case to see how much you learned. For all medical professionals who learn and review by reading cases rather than a non-interactive textbook, the Case Files series are for you.

Good EM text
A good reference book for any med students going into EM. Not the type of book that is very portable, but has good, short chapters for reference to clinical cases seen or as a source for case presentations.

great but outdated british book
I cancelled my order as soon as I visited the Cambridge University Press website, & looked more closely at the content of this book. Although it appears to be a great, extremely helpful book, being based on the chief, presenting complaint, the problem is twofold for American users. First, it uses American Heart Assoc. 2000 guidelines, not 2005, despite being published in 2005, and the AHA guidelines have changed significantly. Second, the book uses British units of measurement (for ex, cm of water, rather than mmHg for blood pressure). This book would be wonderful, a blessing, if it were up to date with current AHA 2005 guidelines & written for U.S. users. You can probably still gain value from it, but should be very familiar with American standards of measurement & current AHA guidelines before reading it, so you can read with discernment.

Organized by complaints, this book is great for how to work through most presentations to the ER, from when the patient arrives all the way to dispo.Good student reference, came recommended to me by a resident.

So far so good for Board Review
I'm over 1/3 of the way through this book while preparing for the PEM Boards 3/09.So far I'm very happy with how the content is pared down to the absolute essentials for each chapter, you can go through it fairly quick.At the beginning of each chapter they list some of the special considerations for peds, for example, blunt chest trauma is affected by a child's flexible bony thorax, or for head injuries they review the biomechanics caused by the child's large head, etc.I ordered this because of the question format at the end of each chapter, they are ok, some seem unnecessarily picky but so did the new PREP-EM questions from the AAP.

I was worried the info would be out of date as it is a few years old but I haven't found that to be a problem.

fun read
The case presentation format of this text is a great way to learn -- it catches my attention and keeps it since each summary is short and sweet.I enjoyed the diagnostic challenge of each case and the immediate gratification of each case review. There are photos, lab results, xrays and EKGs for each presentation to help bring the cases to life. It's more fun than opening a textbook and reading through each condition. Great choice of cases and very nicely written with attention to detail. This will be a nice addition to your library, especially if you're tired of the same old Tintanelli and Rosen.The cases are bread and butter, with a twist, so you can buff up on your differentials.Entertainment like no other.Great job!

I have really enjoyed reading Clinical Emerngency Medicine Casebook by Levis and Garmel.The book is written in a case based format.Each case is presented in a way that allows the reader to work through the history and physical and then try to come up with the solution.Each case is then followed by a brief, yet very informative discussion with current and pertinent references.

The text is loaded with photos, xrays, EKGS, etc.The book is an easy and entertaining read - but still teaches and re-inforces both key principles of Emergency Medicine and some rarely seen but important topics.I have been practicing Emergency Medicine for 10 years and have found this book as a great addition to my preparation for board recertification. ...   Excellent Introduction to Radiology
  I'm a 4th year medical student heading in to emergency medicine.I read this book during my radiology elective and found it extremely helpful. Dr. Schwartz's very readable case-based text was an insightful introduction in to basic radiology. The book taught me HOW to read many common studies as well as WHERE to focus.Highly recommended to all who could use a broad introduction to emergency (and general) radiology.

I'm going into EM so I read this even though there isn't an exam at the end of the rotation.It really fills in the detail gaps that you just can't remember when they are listed out in textbooks.

Good questions in USMLE format and a fair number of questions with pictures, EKGs, x-rays, CTs etc. Good explanations of correct and incorrect choices. Overall, very good review of emergency medicine for Step 2 CK.

Very good book!
I like the books in the NMS clinical series; I used all of them as a reference while reviewing for Step 2. Of course, they are not review book for USMLE but if you used them during your clerkship they are extremely useful to have handy. Psychiatric emergencies chapter has some lacunae; hopefully they will be corrected in the next edition.

An outstanding resource
I like to carry handbooks with me for use in the hospital, and have borrowed/bought quite a few. This book stands out in its comprehensiveness and accessibility.

The formatting makes excellent use of spacing and color so that one can easily locate the information without searching through a paragraph of prose.

The information is arranged in a logical manner and is written for immediate practical application (for example, the Disposition heading details under what conditions a patient may be released from the ER). I have used other books that mention such-and-such a test or procedure, but not enough information is given regarding the specific situations that they would apply to.

This book packs an enormous amount of information into its thin pages (the pages on radiology show several CT Abd slices - almost a mini atlas), and you end up with a book that is slightly too big to fit in a white coat pocket. But I think it is worth carrying around - the information and approaches contained allow one to tackle nearly any medical problem encountered in the ER (and elsewhere).

A definate MUST have !!
This handbook is absolutely great. It is well written, easy to use and concise. Of course it does not contain all the information in the full rosen text, but at least it gives you a small referrance to carry around with you that contains the essntials such as: red flags, tables, and classification of diseases and cases. The nice thing with this book is that is has non of the filling text that the full version has. It just tells you the main things to look for, the important epidemiology (eg. how common the condition is , or the percentage of a particular condition with in the total disease),what is necessary to check for in the history and physical, then what to do about it and what is needed to be done for such a case. Great Book!
Loved this book - it was great even for individuals who don't plan on becoming physicians. The terminology and situations seem to place you right there in a crisis situation. Great for a rush and to get a first-hand glimpse of what doctors and nurses really go through.

good in some parts, lacking in others.
I liked this book overall. It is an "okay" review prior to an exam- could be read in a week or so. I found the toxicology section particularly useful. Cardiology espcially was really lacking.

Too many typos & conflicting info
I am a 3rd year Emergency Medicine Resident.

While this review book is concise and has lots of useful information, it is severely flawed. First, there are numerous typos, which gives the impression that no one edited this book. There are typos in every chapter and many chapters with multiplet typos within a given section. Then, there is some information that is flat out wrong (e.g., tumor lysis syndrome causes hypophosphatemia).

I have read this book cover to cover and I'm disappointed I did. I would not recommend this book.

This is an amazing book. it's small and has everything you need as a medical student working in the emergency department. I've been unsing it for months and only one o twice didn't find what i was looking for.
I even use it before any exam to review what is really important and what i must know before the examn on any topic.

Excellent bed-side refferance
If you are looking for a bed-side book to guide you through most of the ED procedures, then this is the book.

The New Standard in EM Procedures
This book is extremely detailed and has great illustrations.I compared this book for many hours to Roberts & Hedges (R&H) 4th ed and this book blows it away.The entire procedure is fully explained (as in both books), but this book shows you numerous different locations and ways of getting the same procedure done.This seems to lack in R&H.Also, the illustrations are great.R&H uses mainly black and white photos from the 1970's/80's where the person was not even using gloves and there is a footnote in every picture to use gloves.I think R&H needs to use new updated pictures if they want to even compete with this book.The increased use of color, great illustrations with key landmarks, numerous charts, and ease of explanation make this book essential in any emergency physician's library. ...
